Near and Far is a board game for 2 to 4 players designed by Ryan Laukat and published by Red Raven Games in 2017. In this map based storytelling board game, [1] players seek fame and fortune and the eventual discovery of a mysterious last ruin. [2] The gameplay blends resource management with a storybook, with players controlling heroes that equip and provision themselves in a town, and then set out to explore the map, setting up camps and completing quests. [3] The game is a sequel to Laukat's Above and Below, which is set in the same fictional universe (Arzium). [4]
The game can be played as an ongoing, 10 game campaign, with each session being played on a different map. [5]
The game was originally sold via a Kickstarter campaign in July 2016, raising over $520,000 from over 7,000 backers. [6]
Players begin in a town, hiring allies and obtaining supplies such as coins, gems, and food from different buildings. [7] They can then explore the world by using one of 11 different maps. The game comes with an atlas of spiral bound world maps, [8] with each flip of the page revealing a different map that can be the board for a particular game. [9]
Players will set up camps on the map, gain resources, defeat threats, and explore story locations through the use of a separate storybook. [10] When a player reaches an adventure location, another player will read the story, which ends by giving the player two choices, and a skill check which must be passed to give rewards. Players win by scoring the most points, many of which come from artifacts, which require certain resources to build.
There are four play modes to the game. There is a tutorial scenario, an arcade mode which eliminates the stories from play, a character mode which has different stories for eight unique characters attempting to find a lost ruin which holds an artifact that will fulfill their heart's desire, [11] and a full campaign mode with far reaching story elements which uses 10 of the game's maps in different play sessions. Popular Mechanics , Inverse , and Stuff each cited Near and Far as one of the best board games of 2017, with Matt Thrower of Stuff describing it as "a rare game that can satisfy the desire for both story and strategy at once." [8] [4] [12]
In October 2017, Red Raven Games launched an expansion to the game, again via a Kickstarter campaign, titled Near and Far: Amber Mines. The campaign raised over $350,000 from just under 6,600 backers, with an anticipated delivery date of April 2018. [13]
Sunless Sea is a survival/exploration role-playing video game with roguelike elements developed by Failbetter Games. The game was released on 6 February 2015 for Windows and OS X following a successful Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the project. The game takes place in the universe of Failbetter's browser adventure game Fallen London, in which Victorian-era London has been moved beneath the Earth's surface to the edge of the Unterzee, a vast underground ocean. On 11 October 2016, the game's first downloadable content Zubmariner was released, which allows players to explore beneath the surface of the "zee". A sequel, Sunless Skies, was announced in September 2016. It surpassed its funding goals on Kickstarter and was released on 31 January 2019.
Defense Grid: The Awakening is a tower defense video game developed by Hidden Path Entertainment for Windows and Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360. The game was one of the titles promoted by Microsoft during their Game Developers Conference keynote speech on February 20, 2008. The game was released for Microsoft Windows on December 8, 2008, and for Xbox 360 on September 2, 2009. The OS X version shipped from Virtual Programming on July 7, 2010.
Santorini is an abstract strategy board game for 2-4 players designed by Gordon Hamilton in 1985. He published the all-white wooden version in 2004. It was republished via Kickstarter in 2016 by Roxley Games. Inspired by the architecture of cliffside villages on Santorini Island in Greece, and primarily designed for two players, the game is played on a grid where each turn players build a town by placing building pieces up to three levels high. To win the game, players must move one of their two characters to the third level of the town.
Interstellar Marines is a science fiction first-person shooter video game that was developed by indie studio Zero Point Software until 2019. It was added to Steam Greenlight on September 3, 2012 and later released on Steam Early Access on July 2, 2013.
Heroes & Generals was a free-to-play first-person shooter and real-time strategy video game set in World War II developed and published by Reto-Moto, and TLM Games from February 3, 2022, following Reto-Moto's acquisition by TLM Partners. Reto-Moto was founded by some of the founders of IO Interactive and the Hitman series. The developers called it a "mass participation game" in contrast to a traditional massively multiplayer online game, where the actions in the FPS-part of the game reflect into the strategy-part. The player can use weapons from Germany, the United States, and the Soviet Union. Heroes & Generals was shut down on May 25, 2023 by TLM Games.
War for the Overworld is a real-time strategy video game developed by Brightrock Games based in Brighton, UK. The game started as a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, which ran from November 29, 2012, to January 3, 2013. In the game, players build dungeons containing deadly traps to kill adventuring heroes that enter. The game is inspired by Dungeon Keeper, StarCraft, Overlord, and Evil Genius. It includes a campaign, sandbox mode, and online multiplayer.

Ryan Laukat is an American author, and illustrator from Salt Lake City, Utah. He started in 2008, and has worked on a dozen boardgames and illustrations. He founded Red Raven Games in 2011 He is known for the unique art in his boardgames. Many of his games are played using a campaign system and have a story as part of the game mechanism. Ryan Laukat regularly uses the platform Kickstarter to fund the games he published.
Arcs: Conflict & Collapse in the Reach is a space opera board game designed by Cole Wehrle, illustrated by Kyle Ferrin, and published by Leder Games in 2024 alongside Arcs: The Blighted Reach Expansion, a large expansion which significantly modifies the base game into a three-act legacy campaign. Its full retail release is expected in September 2024, though it also is set to appear at GenCon 2024 with a limited number of copies. In Arcs, players compete to gain the most points by fulfilling variable objectives, taking actions through a trick-taking system and using different dice to attack enemy starships, with each player possessing variable powers.
