Neer Bikram Shah, also known as Nir Shah, is a Nepalese film actor, director, producer, poet, songwriter, and businessman. He is considered one of the leading actors in Nepali cinema history and an actor with multiple identities. [1] He is related to the royal family of Nepal. [2]
Neer Shah is the producer or co-producer of many Nepali movies. He has also directed several Nepali movies produced by himself, including Basudev , Pachchis Basanta, Basanti, and a Nepal Bhasa movie Rajamati. [3] [4] He is also a co-producer of the Oscar-nominated film Himalaya – l'enfance d'un chef , which was co-produced and directed by the French movie maker Eric Valli. [5] The film, also released as Caravan (in Canada) and Himalaya (in Denmark and France), was the first film from Nepal to win an Oscar nomination. [6]
Shah has also played antagonistic as well as other character roles in movies such as Prem Pinda and Balidan . He has also appeared in a few Bollywood movies as a guest artist. Shah has also penned down many Nepali and Nepal Bhasa songs. He has also done the scriptwriting for a few of his films.
In 2001, he served on the jury of Film South Asia '01, the festival of South Asian documentaries, along with Firdous Azim and Shyam Benegal. [7]

Shah was the first head and founder of Nepal Television (NTV), the first TV station in Nepal, and is the chairman of Shangri-La TV (STV), a film production and microwave TV distribution company. [9] [10] STV produced many programmes for NTV and also provided the cable television network in Kathmandu valley. Shah holds 33 per cent equity in a United Kingdom-based firm, Galaxy, which is involved in telecasting Nepalese TV channels overseas. [2] Along with Nirmal Nicholas Paul, he set up a production company called "888 Films", that produces Nepalese and Hindi films. [6] Another of his companies, National Studio, provides training in various fields of cinema production. [11] He is also one of the proprietors of New Century Pictures Pvt.Ltd., a film production company. [12] Shah also serves on the Governing Council of College of Journalism and Mass Communication in Nepal. [13]
In 2002, he was felicitated by the Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation in recognition of his contribution in the "promotion of Nepalese art and culture and tourism industry". [14]
He currently lives in London.
One of his two brothers, Kumar Khadga Bikram Shah, was married to one of three former King Gyanendra Shah's sisters, Princess Sharada Shah. Both his brother and sister-in-law were killed in the infamous Royal Massacre of 2001. [15] His other brother is Lalit Bikram Shah.
Shah is also affiliated with the Nepali Congress. Earlier, close to CPN (Maoist Centre), he became close to the Nepali Congress after he was appointed as director of Nepal Television during the period of Minendra Rijal as communication minister. [16]
Nepal Sambat, also spelled as Nepala Sambata, is the lunar calendar used by Nepali of Nepal. The calendar era began on 20 October 879 CE, with 1143 in Nepal Sambat corresponding to the year 2022–2023 CE. Nepal Sambat appeared on coins, stone and copper plate inscriptions, royal decrees, chronicles, Hindu and Buddhist manuscripts, legal documents and correspondence.
Hari Bansha Acharya is a Nepalese actor, comedian, director, singer and writer. He is known for his method acting. He is one half of the comedy duo MaHa Jodi along with fellow comedian Madan Krishna Shrestha. He is known for his performance as Arjun in the 1997 patriotic drama film Balidaan. His performance in the series Madan Bahadur Hari Bahadur as "Hari Bahadur" is well recognized. He also wrote and performed in the film Shatru Gatey.
Hridayendra Shah is a member of the former Nepalese Royal Family and was the second in line to Nepal's royal throne. The monarchy was officially abolished on 28 May 2008. Until the abolition of the monarchy he was known in Nepal by the title Nava Yuvaraj.
Kalidas Shrestha was a Nepalese artist, sculptor, social activist, and was the founding chairman of Kamala Memorial Community Service Center. He also founded Nepal Fine Arts College and was its first campus chief. He also served as an honorable member of Nepal Academy.
Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Nepal is a Hindu right-wing, cultural conservative party. It previously existed as royalist political party in Nepal from 2006 to 2016. The party was formed as a splinter of Rastriya Prajatantra Party in 2006 and was later reunified in 2016. The party was reformed in 2022 by Kamal Thapa.
Jamim Shah (1963–2010) was a Nepalese media entrepreneur and the chairman of Channel Nepal Pvt. Ltd. He was the pioneer of commercial cable television network in Nepal with over 1,000 kilometres of cable network. He also had two newspapers and a television channel Channel Nepal, which was the first satellite television station in Nepal.
Kunti Moktan is a Nepali singer. She is classically trained and sings Nepali folk and modern songs. She is best known for her folk–pop songs such as Choli Ramro, Nishthuri Mayalu and Mathi Mathi Sailungey Ma. She usually collaborate with her husband Shila Bahadur Moktan, who is a musician and a singer. Beside singing, she also teaches music at various schools.
Prem Bahadur Kansakar (1918–1991) was a Nepalese fighter for democracy and linguistic rights, author and scholar of Nepal Bhasa. His main contributions were promoting Nepal Bhasa mainly by collecting and preserving ancient manuscripts. He was the founder of Asa Archives, the only public archive in Nepal.
Prof. Ram Raj Pant (1920–1993) was a pioneering linguist of the Nepali language, literary writer and promoter of legal education in Nepal. In addition to publishing multiple volumes on Nepali linguistics, Ram Raj Pant led the establishment of Nepal Law College and was its founding Principal. Nepal Law College later became Nepal Law Campus under the Tribhuvan University.
Satya Mohan Joshi was a Nepalese writer and scholar. Joshi is known for his research on the history and culture of Nepal. He also served as the chancellor of the Nepal Bhasa Academy.
Mahesh Bikram Shah is author, novelist and winner of Madan Puraskar for his book Chhapamar ko Chhoro of Nepal.Shah is now a retired policeman.
Narayan Prasad Rajbhandari, professionally known as Chittaranjan Nepali, was a Nepalese writer and historian. He received the first ever Madan Puraskar for Janaral Bhimsen Thapa Ra Tatkalin Nepal, a biographical book on the life of prime minister Bhimsen Thapa. He wrote in Nepali as well as Nepalbhasa.
Samragyee Rajya Laxmi Shah, credited as Samragyee RL Shah, is a Nepali film actress who works in Nepali cinema. Shah is the recipient of several awards, including one NFDC National Film Awards and one NEFTA Film Awards.
Purna Bikram Shah professionally known as Paul Shah, is a Nepali film actor and model known for his work in the Nepali film industry. Starting off behind the scenes as an video editor, Shah got his film breakthrough from Nai Nabhannu La 4. Since then, Shah has made an appearance in the romantic drama Ma Yesto Geet Gauchu, action film Johnny Gentleman produced by Bikram Basnet, directed by Nitin Chand, and family drama Shatru Gate. He later worked in a social drama Bir Birkam 2, part of the Bir Bikram series and Ma Yesto Geet Gauchhu 2.
Pooja Sharma is a Nepalese actress, producer and also singer known for her work in the Nepalese film industry. Sharma debuted as an actress in 3 Lovers (2012) where she appeared as a supporting actress. She appeared in the leading role in Madhumash, opposite actor Aaryan Sigdel. Sharma gained recognition after her role in Ajhai Pani. The turning point in her career came from the movie Prem Geet, which she co-starred in with Pradeep Khadka. The film was a blockbuster at the box office. Since then, she has starred in Ma Yesto Geet Gauchhu opposite Paul Shah, which was also her first production venture. Her next film Ramkahani, a multistarrer directed by Sudarshan Thapa, was also a hit at the box office. With these achievements, she has established herself as a leading actress in Nepali film industry.
Surya Bikram Gyawali was a Nepali historian. He wrote biographies for numerous people including King Prithvi Narayan Shah and writer Bhanubhakta Acharya. Gyawali also served as a head teacher in Darjeeling. He is also a recipient of the Order of Gorkha Dakshina Bahu, the Order of Tri Shakti Patta, and the Tribhuvan Puraskar (1971).
Ramola Devi Shah, better known as Chhinnalata was a Nepalese writer and poetess.
Bal Krishna Pokharel (1933–2019) was a Nepalese writer, linguist, historian, and literary critic. He was one of the key person behind the publishing of Nepali Brihat Sabdakosh, a comprehensive Nepali dictionary. Alongside Nepali language, he also wrote in Sanskrit and Magar languages. He wrote multiple fiction, non-fiction and poetry books and was awarded with Madan Puraskar in 1963 for his book Nepali Bhasa Ra Sahitya.
Parasmani Pradhan was an Indian Nepali-language writer, poet, translator, grammarian, educator and publisher. He published multiple Nepali language textbooks and played an important role in shaping the modern Nepali grammar. He was one of the key figures who contributed in establishing Nepali as one of the official language of India.
Kristina Gurung is a Nepalese actress and model. Prem Geet 3 is made on a budget of NRs. 4 crore, making it one of the most expensive Nepali film; the film was initially scheduled to release on April 10, 2020, and then rescheduled to February 25, 2021. However, both releases were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic's aftermath shutting many cinemas in the country.
