Negro Crossing, Texas

Negro Crossing is a designation used by the United States Geological Survey for a location in Tom Green County, Texas, United States located along the Middle Concho River. [1] The location is now on the lake bed of Twin Buttes Reservoir. The origin of the name is obscure.

Despite the state passing legislation in 1991 to rename Texas places with the word “negro” in the name, in 2021 the Texas Republican Party urged the state senate not to pass a bill that would repeat the 1991 request to the USGS. [2]

The United States Border Patrol operates 71 traffic checkpoints, including 33 permanent traffic checkpoints, near the Mexico–United States border. The stated primary purpose of these inspection stations is to deter illegal immigration and smuggling activities. After the September 11 attacks in 2001, they took on the additional role of terrorism deterrence. Bernice Raspberry, also called Ed Lively, was a 23-year old African-American man who was murdered in Leakesville, Mississippi, on May 25, 1927. Raspberry was arrested an infraction in Leakesville, but then the sheriff was told he was wanted in nearby Bothwell for "alleged improper conduct with a white woman". Raspberry was taken to Bothwell but then taken back to Leakesville, for safe keeping. A group of some 100 masked man took him from the jail, strung him to a tree, and shot him many times.
