Vanessa "Nessa" Morgan, who also performs as Neska, is a New Zealand-born, Australian R&B singer and songwriter. She has released two albums, Sex & Poverty (May 2004) and Neska (2008). She was based in the United States from 2005 to 2010.

Biography

Morgan is a Māori singer-songwriter and was born in Wellington, New Zealand. [1] Her family moved to Sydney when she was 3-years-old. She was brought up in a musical family, her father was a singer in a funk band. She has three siblings and the family relocated to Newcastle, where she attended school. [2] From the age of 15 she worked with her parents in a trio, Arkestra. [2]

At 24, in 2002, Morgan started writing her own music. [2] She was signed to Gotham/BMG and her debut album, Sex & Poverty, appeared in May 2004. [3] [4] The album was recorded at the House of Blues in Los Angeles, [5] it was produced by Don Was, [6] which peaked at No. 98 on the ARIA Albums Chart and No. 10 on their Hitseekers Albums Chart. [7] Its lead single, "Simple Kinda Woman", appeared in October, which peaked at No. 11 on the ARIA Hitseekers Singles Chart. [8] Morgan supported Alicia Keys at a concert at the Enmore Theatre, in October. [5] [9]

In March 2005 she appeared on SBS TV's music variety quiz show, RocKwiz ' episode 8, and besides being a celebrity contest she performed her song, "Simple Kinda Woman", and a duet with Ross Wilson on a cover version of "Take Me to the River". [10] The latter was released on CD for a Various Artists' compilation album, RocKwiz Duets, in August 2006, [11] and an associated DVD, RocKwiz Duets: Two for the Show. [12]

Morgan relocated to the United States where she established an independent label, ProBono Records, in Atlanta in 2005. She re-imaged herself as Neska and released a self-titled second album in November 2008. Marcie Konsoulas of Planet Urban reviewed the album, "What happened to the simple kind of woman who wants a simple kind of man? Her raw proud Aussie demeanor has been overcast by a bad-girl sex kitten image that not only doesn’t do her justice but is also far from believable. Her sound is no longer unique and would get lost amongst all the standard U.S. R&B singers." [5]

Its first single, "Like It Like That" (July 2007), was nominated for best R&B single at the Urban Music Awards. [13] "Like It Like That", also reached No. 11 on the Hitseekers Singles Chart. [14] Konsoulas further observed, "The sultriness that appeared on the first album has been replaced with tackiness with lyrics like 'spank my ass and pull my hair' and that's just on the first single." [5] By March 2010 the singer had returned to Sydney and reverted to performing as Nessa Morgan. [15]

Whatever Will Be is the debut studio album by Australian singer Tammin Sursok, released on 22 May 2005 by Sony BMG Music Entertainment. It debuted at number thirteen on the top 50 Australian ARIA Charts. It features the singles "Pointless Relationship", "Whatever Will Be" and "It's a Beautiful Thing". The album spent eleven weeks in the top 100.

<i>RocKwiz</i> Australian television music show

RocKwiz is an Australian television live music trivia quiz show, focused on rock music and featuring different guest artist musicians who perform live in each episode. The show was co-created by Brian Nankervis, Peter Bain-Hogg, and Ken Connor. It was originally broadcast on SBS and premiered in 2005 also on Foxtel's Max but now airs on Foxtel. The 14th season, which was the final season aired by SBS, premiered on 7 May 2016. Season 14 consisted of 7 episodes, recorded between February and April 2016, with the theme "RocKwiz Salutes The Legends". The final episode aired on 25 June 2016. The series won the 2007 AACTA Award for Best Light Entertainment Television Series and was nominated in the same category three times, it was also nominated for a Helpmann Award. On February 3, 2019 it was announced that SBS would no longer be commissioning any more TV episodes although the live touring shows would continue. In 2023, a new series was commissioned by Foxtel, with some changes to the format including a focus on more recent music and filming in a studio.

Eve Sarah von Bibra is an Australian singer-songwriter and actress. From 1986 to 1991, she was a member of the pop group, Chantoozies, as one of four female lead vocalists. She co-wrote their hit, "Wanna Be Up", which peaked in the top 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart in July 1988. Von Bibra acted in the 2006 movie Kenny, playing Jackie – a flight attendant and the title character's love interest. She studied at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and is a member of the Australian branch of the Bibra family.

David Lawrence Mason is an Australian singer-songwriter and record producer originally from Dubbo. He is the founding mainstay of pop, rock group, The Reels. For the group, Mason wrote and sang their hit singles, "Love Will Find a Way", "Prefab Heart" (1980), "After the News", and "Shout and Deliver". He also wrote "Quasimodo's Dream", which was a non-charting single from May 1981. However, in May 2001, it was listed by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) at No. 10 of their Top 30 Australian songs of all time.

"Slipping Away" is a song by Max Merritt. It was released as a single in 1975 by his then UK-based New Zealand group, Max Merritt and The Meteors. The second single from their album A Little Easier, it gave Max Merritt the biggest hit of his career in Oceania, peaking at #2 in Australia and #5 in New Zealand. “That song struck a chord with a lot of people," Max said, "and I’m very proud of it. It has been very good to me."
