The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 which was held on 29 November 2020 in Warsaw, Poland. [2] The girl group Unity was selected by AVROTROS to represent the country through the televised national selection Junior Songfestival 2020. [3] [4] They achieved 4th place with 132 points. [5]

Background

Prior to the 2020 contest, the Netherlands had participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest seventeen times since its first entry in 2003. The Netherlands have won the contest on one occasion: in 2009 with the song "Click Clack" performed by Ralf Mackenbach. [6] In the 2019 contest, Matheu represented the Netherlands in Gliwice, Poland with the song "Dans met jou". He placed 4th out of 19 entries with 186 points. [7]

Before Junior Eurovision

Junior Songfestival 2020

The national selection consisted of one live show, which was held on 26 September 2020. For the first time in its history, the contest was held in Rotterdam Ahoy and without an audience (due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic). [1]

Competing entries

The four acts that were planned to compete in the national final were announced on 29 May. [8] However, before the show, it was announced that Robin and Unity member Demi had tested positive for COVID-19 on the day of the final. Therefore, Robin could not participate and Unity competed without their fourth member. [9] As a consolation, Robin got to make an appearance at Junior Eurovision as the spokesperson for the Dutch jury votes. [10]

Final

409,000 viewers watched the final live on NPO 3, the highest since 2017, with a market share of 3.7%. [16]

Criticism

With the release of T-Square's song "Count On Me", accusations of plagiarism of the song "Boy With Luv" by BTS emerged on social media. Due to these accusations, AVROTROS launched a formal investigation with several music experts. As a result of the investigation, AVROTROS responded to the allegations through the Junior Songfestival Instagram account rejecting the allegations, and that the K-Pop sound used in the song is common among international artists. They also said music should be a means to bring people together and not divide them, and that they firmly stand with T-Square regarding the song. [18]

Unity

Unity is a Dutch girl group consisting of Naomi, Demi, Maud and Jayda. They represented the Netherlands in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 with the song "Best Friends". [19]

Best Friends

"Best Friends" is a song by Unity, written and produced by Robert Dorn. It was released on 16 July 2020, with an acoustic version being released on 6 November. [20] [21] The song contains verses in Dutch and a chorus in English. [22]

At Junior Eurovision

After the opening ceremony, which took place on 23 November 2020, it was announced that the Netherlands would perform in third position in the final, following Kazakhstan and preceding Serbia. [23] In total, 1,056,000 people watched the final live on 26 November 2020. [24]

Voting

The same voting system that was introduced in the 2017 edition was used, where the results were determined by 50% online voting and 50% jury voting. [25] Every country had a national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two children aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten. [26]

The online voting consisted of two phases. The first phase of the online voting began on 27 November 2020 when a recap of all the rehearsal performances was shown on the contest's website Junioreurovision.tv before the viewers could vote. After this, voters also had the option to watch longer one-minute clips from each participant's rehearsal. This first round of voting ended on Sunday 29 November at 15:59 CET. The second phase of the online voting took place during the live show and began right after the last performance and was open for 15 minutes. International viewers were able vote for three songs. [27] They were also able to vote for their own country's song. These votes were then turned into points which were determined by the percentage of votes received. For example, if a song received 10% of the votes, it received 10% of the available points.

During the live show, the Netherlands received 64 points from online voting, out of 697 total. [28]

Detailed voting results

Every participating country had national jury that consisted of three music industry professionals and two kids aged between 10 and 15 who were citizens of the country they represented. The rankings of those jurors were combined to make an overall top ten. [30] The results of the Dutch jury were announced during the liveshow by national finalist Robin de Haas. [31]

The expert jury consisted of Xander de Buisonjé, Niels Geusebroek, and Yvonne Coldeweijer.

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 was the fifteenth edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). It took place on 26 November 2017 at the Olympic Palace, in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi. This was the fifth time that the contest was hosted by the previous year's winning country. The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2017 which took place in Tbilisi, Georgia on 26 November 2017. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS is responsible for the organisation of their representative at the contest. Their entry was selected through the national selection Junior Songfestival 2017. It consisted of six contestants who were divided into two semifinals, having been broadcast on 2 & 9 September 2017. The final was broadcast on 16 September 2017. The boy band Fource, a quartet consisting of the four boys Jannes, Niels, Max and Ian, were selected as the winners of the national selection. Their song for the contest, "Love Me", was released on 6 October 2017.

The semi-final took place online between 24 and 31 August 2020, while the final took place on 26 September 2020. "Forever" performed by Karakat Bashanova was as the winner.

Poland hosted and participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Warsaw. Polish broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) was responsible for the country's participation in the contest, and organised the national final Szansa na sukces to select the Polish entry for the contest. The national final was won by Ala Tracz with the song "I'll Be Standing", which represented Poland in the contest. She ended up 9th place with 90 points.

Malta participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020, to be held in Warsaw, Poland. Maltese broadcaster Public Broadcasting Services (PBS) was responsible for the country's participation in the contest, and organised a national final to select the Maltese entry. Malta was represented in the contest by the song "Chasing Sunsets", written by Peter Borg, Aleandro Spiteri Monseigneur, Joe Roscoe and Emil Calleja Bayliss, and performed by Chanel Monseigneur. She achieved 8th place with 100 points.

Russia participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2020 which took place on 29 November 2020, in Warsaw, Poland. The Russian broadcaster All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK) was responsible for organising their entry for the contest. Sofia Feskova won the national final on 25 September 2020 with the song "Moy novy den". The representative of Russia in 2020, Sofia Feskova, placed 10th place with 88 points.

The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2021 in Paris, France. National broadcaster AVROTROS selected Ayana to represent the Netherlands through the national final Junior Songfestival 2021. With her song "Mata Sugu Aō Ne", containing lyrics in Dutch, English and Japanese, she finished in 19th place at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest with 43 points.

The Netherlands participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin, Italy, with "De diepte" performed by S10. The Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS internally selected the Dutch entry for the 2022 contest. S10's appointment as the Dutch representative was announced on 7 December 2021, while the song, "De diepte", was presented to the public during an event on 3 March 2022.

The Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was the 20th edition of the annual Junior Eurovision Song Contest, organised by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and host broadcaster Public Television Company of Armenia (AMPTV). The contest took place on 11 December 2022 at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex in Yerevan, Armenia, following the country's victory at the 2021 contest with the song "Qami Qami" by Maléna. This was the second time that Armenia hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, the first being in 2011.

The Netherlands participated in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Yerevan, Armenia. National broadcaster AVROTROS was responsible for the participation and selected the nation's entrant, Luna with the song "La festa", via national final Junior Songfestival 2022.

The Netherlands will compete in the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in France, which will be held in Nice on 26 November 2023. An act will be selected by AVROTROS to represent the country through the televised national selection Junior Songfestival 2023.
