On 2 January 2023, a fire broke out at New County Hotel in Perth, Scotland. It killed three people and one dog, and injured eleven other people.
New County Hotel is a three-star [1] hotel on County Place in central Perth. [2] The hotel had previously had a fire in August 2016. Set off by a malfunctioning dishwasher, guests were evacuated and suffered no injuries.
The hotel is managed by the Edwin Hotels Group, which is owned by Rashid Hussain, a British businessman supposedly based in Dubai. [3] [4] Hussain previously owned the Melbourne Ardenlea, a hotel on the Isle of Wight that was shut after an official report stated there was risk of “serious personal injury with the danger of fire, explosion, gas leaks and carbon monoxide”. [5] [4] The hotel was later reopened. [4]
On 12 December 2022, a fire safety audit was carried out at New County Hotel by the Croner Group on behalf of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. [6] [7] The audit said that the measures at the time were not substantial enough; they listed 29 issues with the building. [6] [7] The report included issues with emergency doors, escapes and lighting. The hotel was ordered to fix the issues within 28 days. [8] [9] [10]
Perth and Kinross Council had previously issued three health and safety warnings to the hotel. [3] [10] The warnings highlighted problems with flooring and windows in the hotel. [4]
Previous guests of the hotel had raised their own concerns about the safety of the hotel. Some said that the hotel had ignored previous warnings about risks, while others were concerned about fire safety due to cigarette butts being left in corridors. [11] Deputy First Minister John Swinney had previously encouraged hotel guests to speak out about issues they found. [12]
Fire death is relatively uncommon in Scotland. [4] The fire at New County Hotel was the country's first case of fire death in over five years. The last case was the Cameron House fire, which killed two people in December 2017. [13]
Around 5:10 a.m. on 2 January 2023, [14] reports were made to Police Scotland of a fire on the second floor [15] [3] of New County Hotel in Perth. [16] [17] Emergency services arrived at the hotel around 5:12 a.m., including 60 firefighters [18] (in nine fire engines) and 21 ambulances. [19] Tayside Police evacuated the 16 people from the hotel and two people from the surrounding buildings. [7] [20] Citizens were asked to avoid the area around the hotel. [21] [22] Fires were fully extinguished by 6:30 a.m., [18] but two fire engines remained on site to check the hotel. [23]
Three people were confirmed dead from the incident, as well as a dog. [22] [18] The Scottish Ambulance Service treated eleven people for minor injuries. [18] [20] [24] The bodies of the people killed were taken away from the site in a private ambulance before noon. [18] Perth and Kinross Council closed four roads around the hotel to prevent further harm to civilians, impacting traffic flow due to the hotel's central location. [19] [21] The three victims were named on 6 January by Police Scotland. [25] [26]
The manager of New County Hotel filed an employment tribunal against Rashid Hussain following the fire. [27]
Police and Fire services started an investigation into the incident after gaining control of the fire. Police stated that a report would be sent to the Procurator Fiscal service. [26] The Deputy Leader of Perth and Kinross council, Cllr. Eric Drysdale, urged people to stay away from the scene so the investigation could be successful. [18]
Perthshire, officially the County of Perth, is a historic county and registration county in central Scotland. Geographically it extends from Strathmore in the east, to the Pass of Drumochter in the north, Rannoch Moor and Ben Lui in the west, and Aberfoyle in the south; it borders the counties of Inverness-shire and Aberdeenshire to the north, Angus to the east, Fife, Kinross-shire, Clackmannanshire, Stirlingshire and Dunbartonshire to the south and Argyllshire to the west. The MGM Grand fire occurred on Friday, November 21, 1980 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino, located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. The fire killed 85 people, most through smoke inhalation. The fire began from a refrigerated pastry display case in one of the restaurants, located on the first floor. Fire engulfed the resort's casino, and smoke travelled into the hotel tower.

Tayside Fire and Rescue Service was, between 1975 and 2013, the statutory fire and rescue service for the area of Tayside in Scotland. It was amalgamated into the single Scottish Fire and Rescue Service in 2013.
The Penhallow Hotel fire was a suspected arson attack that occurred in Newquay, Cornwall on 18 August 2007. Three people were killed and it was reported as the worst hotel fire in the United Kingdom in nearly 40 years. The hotel was a well-known hotel for holiday makers ranging from families to older residents. It had been built in Island Crescent between 1912 and 1917, and had been altered more than once. The building had a wooden fire escape at the rear, and a central light shaft running from the ground floor up to the roof in the centre of the hotel. Both of these aspects of the building played a dramatic role in the outcome of the fire. Many of those that escaped the fire were elderly holiday makers.

The Royal Jomtien Resort Hotel was a 450-room luxury hotel situated in a 17-story high-rise building on the northern end of Jomtien Beach, 110 kilometres (68 mi) south of Bangkok. At approximately 10:20 local time, 11 July 1997, a fire ignited as a result of a faulty liquid propane gas cylinder in a ground floor buffet of the hotel. The fire burned for 8 to 12 hours across all floors and caused the deaths of at least 91 people and injuries to a further 63.
T in the Park 2016 was a three-day music festival organised by DF Concerts, which took place between 8–11 July 2016 and for the second time was held at Strathallan Castle, which is 20 miles away from the festival's previous location at the disused Balado airfield, Kinross-shire. Strathallan Castle camp site opened from 7 to 12 July, while the overall number of attendances was lower than 2015 after DF Concerts reduced the number of daily tickets by 15,000.
Cameron House, located on Loch Lomond near Balloch, Scotland, was first built in the mid-1700s, and later purchased by Sir James Smollett. The modern Baronial stone castle was built by William Spence in 1830, with peaked gables and decorative turrets.
A fire began at a budget hotel in Central Delhi, the Hotel Arpit Palace, in the Karol Bagh area of the city, at around 4.30am on 12 February 2019, killing at least 17 people. The fire went through all floors of the hotel; people were seen jumping from it.
Alistair Wilson was a banker aged 30 living in Nairn, Scotland who was shot to death on his doorstep on 28 November 2004. The ensuing murder inquiry was one of the largest ever carried out in Scotland and the crime remains unsolved. The apparent lack of motive and other unexplained elements of the murder have led to it being described as 'Scotland's most mysterious unsolved crime' and 'one of the most baffling cases of modern times', and it has attracted ongoing press coverage ever since.
On Monday 25 September 2023, at 5:37pm, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were first alerted to a fire at the derelict Ayr Station Hotel building, a Category B Listed Building next to Ayr railway station in Ayr, a town on the west coast of Scotland. Three arrests were made, one 13-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy were arrested shortly after the fire, with a third, another 13-year-old boy, being arrested by Police Scotland on Wednesday 27 September.
