New Urban Arts is a nonprofit arts organization that provides after school arts mentoring and studio space for high school students and emerging artists in Providence, Rhode Island. In 2017, students at New Urban Arts came primarily from four Providence schools: Classical High School, Central High School, the Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center (the Met), and Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA). [1] The organization focuses on helping students develop a life-long creative practice, a summer arts inquiry program, and a leadership program that allows student participants to drive the direction of the organization. [2] Each year, New Urban Arts serves 700 high school students, 25 emerging artists, and 2,000 visitors to the studio. [3]
Originally called "Project New Urban Arts," the organization was founded in October 1997 by four college students (Jullia Kim, Malaika Thorne, Marcus Civin, and Tyler Denmead) and ten high school students from Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, Central High School, Mount Pleasant High School, and Hope High School. [4] In 1998, Tyler Denmead was awarded a prestigious Echoing Green Fellowship to launch New Urban Arts as a nonprofit, and he became the first executive director. [5]
New Urban Arts began in a loft above Grace Church in downtown Providence, Rhode Island and then moved to 743 Westminster Street in Providence in 1998. In 2011, New Urban Arts announced a capital campaign and purchased, renovated, and moved to its current space at 705 Westminster Street. In 2016, with support from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts, New Urban Arts renovated 705 Westminster Street, adding space and accessibility for a total of 6,000 square feet. [6]

Central to New Urban Arts is the Youth Mentorship in the Arts program, which pairs adult artists with small groups of students for after school art making. [2] Artist mentors include both volunteers and staff, known as resident artist mentors. New Urban Arts supports volunteer artist mentors through a Professional Development Program and the students through leadership programs (the Studio Team Advisory Board), postsecondary advising, and tutoring. Summer programs include paid internships, arts inquiry explorations, an Untitlement program that explores identities, and open studio time. [17] In 2017, New Urban Arts and Central High School began a collaboration called NUA Knights, which includes arts programming at the school. During the COVID-19 pandemic, New Urban Arts arranged for the delivery of arts supplies to students and mentors. [18]
In 2009, New Urban Arts received a Coming Up Taller Award presented by Michelle Obama at the White House. [19] These awards "recognize exemplary arts and humanities programs which foster young people's intellectual and creative development." [20]
Another national award came in 2008 (followed by renewals in 2013 and 2018) when the Rhode Island Department of Education named New Urban Arts a 21st Century Community Learning Center. [21]
The Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence of the Rhode Island Foundation and Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island awarded New Urban Arts a Best Practices Award in Board Governance in 2013. [22]
Emily Ustach, Deputy Director, was named a National Institute on Out-of-School Time Fellow for 2017–2019. [23]
The ideas and practices developed in New Urban Arts over more than twenty years have been very influential. In a recent book, The Creative Underclass: Youth, Race and the Gentrifying City, founding director Tyler Denmead provides an ethnography of New Urban Arts in the beginning of the twentieth century and ties student expectations to local and national public policy initiatives. [24] Susan Smulyan, a Brown University professor and former Board Chair at New Urban Arts, writes about the organization and what it can teach the new academic field of public humanities in an essay in an anthology, Doing Public Humanities. [25] Staff and mentors have written hands-on essays, most recently Deputy Director Emily Ustach who describes “Flexibility and Fidelity in a Drop-In, After School Art Studio Program” in Afterschool Matters. [26]
Rhode Island School of Design is a private art and design school in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded in 1877 and offers bachelor's and master's degree programs across 19 majors. It is affiliated with Brown University, with which it shares a contiguous campus on College Hill.
Nancy Elizabeth Prophet was an American artist of African-American and Native American ancestry, known for her sculpture. She was the first African-American graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1918 and later studied at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris during the early 1920s. She became noted for her work in Paris in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1934, Prophet began teaching at Spelman College, expanding the curriculum to include modeling and history of art and architecture. Prophet died in 1960 at the age of 70.
John Maeda is an American executive, designer, technologist. His work explores the area where business, design, and technology merge to make space for the "humanist technologist."
Earl Roger Mandle, better known as Roger Mandle, was an American museum administrator, curator, art historian, and college president. He was president of the Rhode Island School of Design from 1993 to 2008. He was director at Toledo Museum of Art (1977–1988), and deputy director and chief curator of National Gallery of Art (1988–1993).
Dan Dailey is an artist who, with the support of a team of artists and crafts people, creates sculptures and functional objects in glass and metal.
Jungil Hong also known as Jung-li Hong is a Korean-American artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. She is best known for her psychedelic, cartoon-inspired silkscreen poster art and paintings. More recently she has expanded into textiles.
Pippi Anne Zornoza is an American interdisciplinary artist, working in visual art, performance art, music, and co-founder of the Providence-based artist collective Dirt Palace and Hive Archive.
Malcolm Grear was an American graphic designer whose work encompassed visual identity programs, print publications, environmental design, packaging, and website design. He is best known for his visual identity work and designed logos for the Department of Health and Human Services, the Veterans Administration, the Presbyterian Church USA, and Vanderbilt University. He was the CEO of Malcolm Grear Designers, a design studio in Providence, Rhode Island.
Kelly Murphy is an American author, illustrator and educator. She is based in Boston, Massachusetts.
Rosanne Somerson is an American-born woodworker, furniture designer/maker, educator, and current President of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). An artist connected with the early years of the Studio Furniture, her work and career have been influential to the field.

The Providence Art Club, Thomas Street, Providence, Rhode Island, was founded in 1880. An art club is an organization for artists and the community to engage and collaborate with each other in a shared space dedicated to art and culture. The Providence Art Club has studios, galleries, eateries, and a clubhouse in a "picturesque procession of historic houses," which are across the street from the First Baptist Church in America.[1] The buildings occupied by the Providence Art Club include Brick House, Dodge House, Deacon Taylor House, and Fleur De Lys Studio.
Helen Lee is an artist, glassblower, designer, and educator. She is currently an associate professor and Head of Glass at University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her work deals themes of language as signifier of meaning and physical form. She describes her practice as an "examination of boundary, duality, and transformation—dwelling on the moments in which breath becomes sound, sound becomes spoken, the spoken word turns written, and the written word is shaped into dimensional form by her own breath." She rendering are often innovative in their process, such as her Alpha-Zanfirico work, based in graphic and digital design. These twisty canes, designed using MIT's VirtualGlass program, are contained in orbs or glass droplets which when cross-sectioned reveal lowercase letters in black.

Liz Collins is an American Postwar and Contemporary artist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Collins is recognized for her artwork involving fabric and textiles as well as the fashion label she developed.She has expertise in textile media including the transition of fabric into multi-dimensional forms as a method to vary the scale of her pieces to make them architectural and inviting rather than object-based.
Donnamaria Bruton was a painter and faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design, known for her mixed media paintings and collages. Bruton worked at RISD starting in 1992, serving as Painting Department head from 2001–03, and as interim dean of Graduate Studies from 2003–05.
