Niamh McGrady (born 4 October 1982) is a film, stage and television actress from Castlewellan, County Down, Northern Ireland. She is best known for her parts as Mary-Claire Carter in Holby City and PC Danielle Ferrington in the psychological thriller The Fall .

Early life and education

Born and raised in Castlewellan, County Down, she attended Assumption Grammar School, Ballynahinch, County Down. From age 18, she trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Career

After landing a role in Summer 2003 in Italy, [3] on graduation she joined a Welsh production of Romeo and Juliet and then pantomime in Belfast, [4] before moving to London for Northern Irish playwright Lisa McGee's production of Girls & Dolls. McGrady then featured in a production of the Shakespeare play Macbeth , starring Patrick Stewart. After a critically acclaimed run in London's West End, it then relocated to Broadway, New York City in 2008. [3]

On return to London, she made her television début in the George Best biopic Best: His Mother's Son in 2009, but her part was eventually removed in the cutting room. [3] Shortly afterwards she joined the cast of Holby City as a cast semi-regular, in the role of nurse Mary-Claire Carter.

After appearing in many short independent films through mainly uncredited roles, she was cast in the crime drama television series The Fall, [3] based in Northern Ireland, alongside Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan. She rejoined the cast of Holby City in 2013 as a regular cast member, [5] after which she gave-up her part-time waitressing and bar jobs. [3] However, in early 2015, McGrady left Holby City to coincide with the departure of Jules Knight and their departure scenes aired in April 2015. [6] [7]

It was created by Tony McHale and Mal Young as a spin-off from the established BBC medical drama Casualty, and premiered on 12 January 1999; the show ran until 29 March 2022. It follows the lives of medical and ancillary staff at the fictional Holby City Hospital, the same hospital as Casualty, in the fictional city of Holby, and features occasional crossovers of characters and plots with both Casualty and the show's 2007 police procedural spin-off HolbyBlue. Niamh Cusack is an Irish actress. Born to a family with deep roots in the performing arts, Cusack has been involved as a performer since a young age. She first appeared in the fifteenth series episode "Push the Button ", broadcast on 22 January 2013. Gemma was introduced as an F1 doctor, but she eventually progressed to an F2 during her time in the show. Gemma was introduced along with fellow F1 Arthur Digby. She first appeared in the eleventh series episode "Spin", broadcast on 22 September 2009. The character was introduced by Tony McHale. Between her arrival and January 2013, Mary Claire appeared on a recurring basis, sometimes with months between appearances, as an agency nurse on Keller and AAU wards. McGrady was promoted to a regular cast member in early 2013 by newly appointed executive producer, Oliver Kent - alongside the introductions of three characters. Her first appearance, as a regular cast member, aired on 23 April when Mary-Claire received a staff nurse job on the AAU ward. She is characterised as a blunt and easily distracted character, yet a brilliant nurse. Her strong point is not diplomacy, but scratch beneath the surface and you'll find a heart of gold.
