Nicolet College is a Public community college with its main campus in Rhinelander, Wisconsin. [1] It has outreach centers in Carter, Crandon, Eagle River, the Forest County Potawatomi Community, Lac du Flambeau, Minocqua, Mole Lake, and Tomahawk. [2]
It is one of 16 colleges in the Wisconsin Technical College System. [3] Created in 1967, the Nicolet district covers all of Oneida, Vilas and Forest counties and portions of Lincoln, Langlade and Iron counties.
The Nicolet College District was created in 1967 with classes starting in January 1968. Shortly after the district was formed, college officials purchased 280 acres just south of Rhinelander to build the Lake Julia Campus. The first building, the Science Center, now the University Student Center, was constructed in 1969 and 1970. While that was being built, the college held its first classes in downtown Rhinelander in what is now the Rhinelander Fire Department. [4]
Nicolet offers 70 degrees, diplomas, and certificates. Classes are offered during the day, in the evening, and online. Students may be enrolled part-time or full-time. Nicolet offers international studies, transfer agreements, and university transfer liberal arts programs. [5]
For the last three decades, Nicolet College has hosted the Northern National Art Competition, a cooperative venture between Nicolet College and the Northern Arts Council. [6] The competition draws entries on a national scale and has been characterized as "one of the premiere national art exhibits in Wisconsin." [7] Past notable jurors have included Emily Lanctot, director and curator for the DeVos Art Museum School of Art & Design at Northern Michigan University, Scott Stulen, Director and President of the Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa, Oklahoma, [8] artists Jeanine Coupe Ryding, Mark Steven Greenfield, and most recently artist and art critic F. Nicolet has an enrollment of about 2,000 students aged 18 and older. Annually more than 10,000 people attend events and courses held at Nicolet. [13]
Vilas County is a county in the state of Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 23,047. Its county seat is Eagle River. The county partly overlaps the reservation of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.

The Chequamegon–Nicolet National Forest is a 1,530,647-acre (6,194.31 km2) U.S. National Forest in northern Wisconsin in the United States. Due to logging in the early part of the 20th century, very little old growth forest remains. Some of the trees there were planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The national forest land trees and vegetation are part of the North Woods Ecoregion that prevails throughout the upper Great Lakes region.

The University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point is a public university in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Established in 1894, it is part of the University of Wisconsin System. UW-Stevens Point grants associate, baccalaureate, and master's degrees, as well as doctoral degrees in audiology, educational sustainability, and physical therapy. In 2018, UW-Stevens Point merged with UW-Stevens Point at Wausau and UW-Stevens Point at Marshfield. The 406-acre (164 ha) main campus includes the 280-acre (113 ha) Schmeeckle Reserve on the north side of the Campus. There are 15 academic buildings, and 13 Residence Halls.
State Trunk Highway 17 is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The highway is a secondary route in northeastern Wisconsin that directly connects Rhinelander, Eagle River and the central and eastern parts of Michigan's Upper Peninsula with Wausau, Wisconsin and points south and west.

The Great Northern Conference is a high school athletic conference in the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association. It comprises seven teams from Marathon, Taylor, Lincoln, Oneida, Langlade and Vilas counties in Northern Wisconsin. The Conference was formed in 2008 with former Lumberjack members Lakeland, Medford, Northland Pines and Tomahawk, Cloverbelt member Mosinee, and Wisconsin Valley's Antigo and Merrill. In 2010, Merrill returned to the Wisconsin Valley conference and Rhinelander took its place.
The 34th Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in northern Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Vilas County and most of Oneida County. It contains the cities of Rhinelander and Eagle River and most of the Lac du Flambeau Reservation. It also contains parts of the Nicolet National Forest, including the Blackjack Springs Wilderness. The district is represented by Republican Rob Swearingen, since January 2013.
The 35th Assembly District of Wisconsin is one of 99 districts in the Wisconsin State Assembly. Located in northern Wisconsin, the district comprises all of Lincoln and Langlade counties, and parts of northern Oconto County, northwest Shawano County, southern Oneida County, and northern Marathon County. It includes the cities of Antigo, Merrill, and Tomahawk, and the villages of Aniwa, Birnamwood, Eland, and Mattoon. It also contains the Council Grounds State Park and about a quarter of the Nicolet National Forest. The district is represented by Republican Calvin Callahan, since January 2021.
