F. Lennox Campello is an American (born in Cuba, 1956) artist, art critic, author, art dealer, curator, and visual arts blogger. [1] [2] [3] In 2016 The Washington City Paper called him "one of the most interesting people of Washington, DC." [4]
Florencio Lennox Campello was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in 1956, [5] and immigrated as a child to the United States in the 1960s along with his political refugee parents and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. [6] [7] [8] He attended Aviation High School in Long Island, New York (Class of 1974). He studied art at the University of Washington (BFA, 1981), [9] where he was commissioned as a U.S. Navy officer, [10] [11] [12] and subsequently received an MS from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California in 1987. [10] [13]
Campello's art is predominantly narrative and storytelling in nature, [14] and often incorporates technology such as video, [15] sound, and miniature spy cameras [2] into the finished pieces. [2] He has exhibited widely in the United States, Europe and Latin America, including in the McManus Museum in Scotland, the Brusque Museum in Brazil, the San Bernardino County Museum in California, the Meadows Museum of Art in Shreveport, Louisiana, the Hunter Museum of American Art in Tennessee, the Sacramento Fine Arts Center in California, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Colorado, the Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland, Oregon, the A.S. Popov Central Museum of Communications in Russia, the American University Museum, the Boise Art Museum in Idaho, the Jordan Schnitzer Museum at the University of Oregon, the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora in Miami, Florida, and The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. This body of works was started in the 1970s while the artist was in art school, and uses the shape/map of the island of Cuba as the unifying element in paintings, prints and drawings. [22] [23] [2] In the works, the island is often depicted as behind jail bars [24] [19] (such as on the cover of the poetry book Cuba in Verse: The Island Behind Bars by Ada Bezos, Editorial Betania (2012) ISBN 978-8480174008), or with oars, [22] or surrounded by tears, [25] etc.
Campello's artwork often appropriates American comic book superhero themes, most often Batman, Superman, Spider-Man and others. [26] [27] [2] [28] He has also curated several group art shows where the artwork is focused on multiple artistic interpretations of the superhero iconograph y. [29]
This series focuses on interpreting the tattoo artwork of the original people of Scotland, known as the Picts. [30] [31] Campello was exposed to Pictish culture while living in Scotland in the 1990s, [11] and began focusing a series of drawings and paintings which over the years have interpreted and reproduced the Pictish tattoos on a variety of male and female nude studies. [35] He was most recently awarded a Maryland State Arts Council Individual Artist Award in 2019, [36] and one of his works was acquired in 2018 for the permanent collection of Montgomery County, Maryland. In a review of his 1996 exhibition of portraits of Internet porn stars, The Washington Post noted that his artwork "manages to find a delicate balance between the black charcoal and cream-colored paper resulting in a grainy, film-noir effect, making his subjects, traffickers in mass-consumption prurience, seem tough but vulnerable, like a flowering plant in a sexual wasteland." [38]
A more recent review of his 2017 solo show in The Washington Post explained that "His technique is classical, but he sometimes incorporates a contemporary technology: embedded video. “Portrait of You” features a live feed of the picture's viewer, and “Cuban by Ancestry, but American by the Grace of God" (seen last year at the American University Museum) chronicles his family history on a video loop." [2] In reviewing the same show, The Washington City Paper noted that the solo show focused "on a couple of his far-ranging "artistic obsessions," as he calls them, from Frida Kahlo to the Book of Genesis to the Picts of Scotland." American art critic Dr. Claudia Rousseau observed that "Campello is a prolific artist who has had an interesting and compelling trajectory of work since the 1980s." [2] [14] [38] [31] [39] Brickell Magazine described him as "a thought leader in the world of the arts on a global scale." [40] In 2020 The Washington City Paper characterized him as a "prominent figure" in discussing artistic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, [41] and a year later described one of his works at The Phillips Collection as a "clever combination of low and high tech, pairing a simple charcoal drawing of a child looking at her reflection, which is shown as a revolving series of electronic images of diverse faces." [42] In 2022, during the annual Art Basel Miami Beach week of art fairs in Miami, he was described as one of the "most intriguing creative minds in the city." [43]

His blog, Daily Campello Art News has been published since 2003 and has been called "indispensable", [57] and also "a bona fide fixture" [58] by the Washington City Paper, which also credits the blog with being the potential "inventor" of the ubiquitous acronym "DMV" to refer to the Greater Washington, DC area (it stands for District, Maryland, Virginia). [59] The local CBS TV station included it in its "Best Local Bloggers" list. [60] The blog is included in the various "Top 100 Art Blogs in the World" listings, [61] and in 2022, the blog was listed as the 11th top ranked art news websites in the world. [62]

In 1996 Campello, together with his then wife, the British photographer Catriona Fraser, co-founded the Fraser Gallery in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC. [46] In 2002 they opened a second gallery in Bethesda, MD. [65] The two galleries closed in 2011, [66] as the couple had divorced earlier, [58] and Campello had moved to Philadelphia in 2006, [67] where he lived until 2009, before returning to the Washington, DC area in 2010.
Campello has curated many visual art shows, [68] [69] [70] most generally around the Greater Washington, DC region, including several seminal art shows focused on dissident Cuban artists, [71] [72] [73] and has been referred to as "one of the most well known faces on the local art scene." [71]

The Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen Arts Center is home to all of the visual and performing arts programs at American University and the American University Museum It is located at Ward Circle, the intersection of Nebraska Avenue and Massachusetts Avenues in Washington, D.C. This 130,000-square-foot (12,000 m2) space, designed to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in the arts, provides instructional, exhibition, and performance space for all the arts disciplines. Its 30,000-square-foot (3,000 m2) art museum exhibits contemporary art from the nation's capital region and the world. The museum gallery is the Washington region's largest university facility for art exhibition.
Artomatic is a multi-week, multimedia arts event held in the Washington metropolitan area. It was founded by Washington, D.C. artist and arts activist George Koch. The non-juried, open event has provided a forum for artists of all types and abilities. There are also arts education and professional development workshops and discussions. Events were held from 1999 up to 2017 at intervals from one to three years, depending upon the availability of a site. Unable to have in-person events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an online event was held in 2020. The organization has remained active in the local arts community.
Sylvia Snowden is an African American abstract painter who works with acrylics, oil pastels, and mixed media to create textured works that convey the "feel of paint". Many museums have hosted her art in exhibits, while several have added her works to their permanent collections.

Manuel Carbonell was a Cuban Contemporary and Modern artist, regarded as among the greatest Cuban sculptors of his generation. He was part of the generation of Cuban artists that includes Wifredo Lam and Agustín Cárdenas, that studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes "San Alejandro", Havana, Cuba. Carbonell's inexhaustible vision and his ever-changing style is the product of a brilliant talent with an academic background. Ceaselessly searching for the essence of form and the absence of details, he empowered a sense of strength and monumentality to his work. Until the age of 92, he had continued to work daily in his studio.
Martha Jackson Jarvis is an American artist known for her mixed-media installations that explore aspects of African, African American, and Native American spirituality, ecological concerns, and the role of women in preserving indigenous cultures. Her installations are composed using a variety of natural materials including terracotta, sand, copper, recycled stone, glass, wood and coal. Her sculptures and installations are often site-specific, designed to interact with their surroundings and create a sense of place. Her works often focus on the history and culture of African Americans in the southern United States. In her exhibition at the Corcoran, Jarvis featured over 100 big collard green leaves, numerous carp and a live Potomac catfish.
Carol Brown Goldberg is an American artist working in a variety of media. While primarily a painter creating heavily detailed work as large as 10 feet by 10 feet, she is also known for sculpture, film, and drawing. Her work has ranged from narrative genre paintings to multi-layered abstractions to realistic portraits to intricate gardens and jungles.
Chawky Frenn is a Lebanese-born American artist, author, and art professor. He currently teaches art at George Mason University in northern Virginia. His highly realistic paintings have strong narrative social and political elements. Frenn is a former Fulbright scholar, and currently resides in the Greater Washington, D.C. area.
Michael Janis is an American artist currently residing in Washington, DC where he is one of the directors of the Washington Glass School. He is known for his work on glass using the exceptionally difficult sgraffito technique on glass.
Tim Tate is an American artist and the co-founder of the Washington Glass School in the Greater Washington, DC capital area. The school was founded in 2001 and is now the second largest warm glass school in the United States. Tate was diagnosed as HIV positive in 1989 and was told that he had a year left to live. As a result, Tate decided to begin working with glass in order to leave a legacy behind. Over a decade ago, Tate began incorporating video and embedded electronics into his glass sculptures, thus becoming one of the first artists to migrate and integrate the relatively new form of video art into sculptural works. In 2019 he was selected to represent the United States at the sixth edition of the GLASSTRESS exhibition at the Venice Biennale.

Hernández was best known for his street photography of his Washington, DC neighborhood as well as street scenes of Cuba, Ghana and Mali, where he led arts-based projects for children and young adults.
Joan Belmar is an American artist. He is a painter who uses a three dimensional technique using painting and collage processes with both painted and untreated Mylar/paper strips in circles and curvilinear shapes variations which then produced different and changes degrees of transparency, as light and the viewer move in relation to the work. He was a Washington, DC Mayor's Art Award Finalist in 2007 as an outstanding emerging artist. The DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities has also awarded him with an Artist Fellowship Program grant in 2009, and in 2011 he was awarded an Individual Artist Grant by the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County, MD. He is a two-time recipient of the Maryland Arts Council Individual Artist Grant in Visual Arts: Painting, in 2010and 2013.
Sandra Pérez-Ramos is a Puerto Rican artist and community art leader in the Maryland and Washington, DC area. She is a resident artist in Gallery 209 inside Artists & Makers Studios] in Rockville, Maryland. Pérez-Ramos earned a BA from the School of Communication at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus, in 1997. She majored in Visual Arts for Public Communication, photography and design.
