Niren Bhatt is a screenwriter and lyricist from Mumbai, India. After leaving his corporate job, he initially wrote commercials and Gujarati plays. He later expanded writing career in Hindi TV series and Gujarati cinema. He eventually has success in Hindi film industry with writing films for Maddock Supernatural Universe, most notably Stree 2 , which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time.

Early life

Bhatt has studied Masters in Engineering and Masters in Business Administration. [1] He worked as a business consultant and started writing. [2] [1] In 2011, he left his corporate job to pursue career in writing. [1]

Career

Bhatt initially wrote commercials and Gujarati plays. Later he started writing for television and films but had mixed reception. His breakthrough came with writing for long running sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. He wrote script and lyrics of 2014 Gujarati film Bey Yaar which became a major hit. He wrote several Gujarati films including hit Wrong Side Raju (2016) and Ventilator (2018) and wrote lyrics of many songs including around 35 music albums in Hindi and Gujarati. He wrote Made in China (2019) for director Mikhil Musale and the Netflix production Serious Men (2020) adapting a novel of the same name. With success of 2019 Hindi film Bala, he had breakthrough in Hindi film industry and began his long association with producer Amar Kaushik. [1] [3] [4] [5] He is credited as the co-creator of Maddock Supernatural Universe along with Amar Kaushik for which he wrote Bhediya (2022), Munjya (2024) and Stree 2 (2024). [3] [4] [5]

He is also the writer of Hindi TV web series like Asur (2020), Ray (2021) and Inside Edge (2017). [1] [3] [4] [5] He wrote two episodes; Spotlight and Hangama Hain Kyon Barpa, the later being an Urdu episode; of Ray. [1]

His upcoming Hindi films include Pooja Meri Jaan,Sky Force and Vampires of Vijay Nagar. [1] [6]

The Maddock Supernatural Universe (MSU) is an Indian shared universe consisting of Hindi-language supernatural comedy horror films. All the films in this universe are based on Indian folklore. The first instalment was Stree, followed by Roohi. These films were standalone, and the universe-building began with Bhediya, in which characters from Stree appeared. The next was Munjya, where characters from Bhediya appeared. Stree 2 also featured characters from Bhediya, making Bhediya the shared connection between all three films. So far, Roohi remains a standalone entity in this universe.
