Uttam Kumar, widely known as the Mahanayak, was an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, composer, and playback singer who predominantly worked in Bengali cinema. His career spanned three decades, from the late 1940s until his death in 1980.
Tarun Majumdar was an Indian film director, documentary filmmaker, author, illustrator and screenwriter who is known for his work in Bengali cinema. He received four National Awards, seven BFJA Awards, five Filmfare Awards and an Anandalok Award. In 1990, the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award. Tapan Sinha was one of the most prominent Indian film directors of his time forming a legendary quartet with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen. He was primarily a Bengali filmmaker who worked both in Hindi cinema and Bengali cinema, directing films like Kabuliwala (1957), Louha-Kapat, Sagina Mahato (1970), Apanjan (1968), Kshudhita Pashan and children's film Safed Haathi (1978) and Aaj Ka Robinhood. Sinha started his career in 1946, as a sound engineer with New Theatres film production house in Kolkata, then in 1950 left for England where he worked at Pinewood Studios for next two years, before returning home to start his six decade long career in Indian cinema, making films in Bengali, Hindi and Oriya languages, straddling genres from social realism, family drama, labor rights, to children's fantasy films. He was one of the acclaimed filmmakers of Parallel Cinema movement of India.
Ogo Bodhu Shundori is a 1981 Bengali comedy film, directed by Salil Dutta. It was one of the last films of the iconic Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, who died during production. A lookalike, Prabir Kumar, was brought in to stand in for Uttam Kumar during the final sections of the film and in the song O Daddy O Mummy. The film starred also Moushumi Chatterjee, Sumitra Mukherjee, Ranjit Mallick and Santosh Dutta. The film became blockbuster hit at the box office.
Amanush (transl. Inhuman) is a 1975 Indian action drama film made in both Hindi and Bengali languages, produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The film stars Sharmila Tagore, Uttam Kumar, Utpal Dutt and Asit Sen. Both the versions were hits. The film was based on Shaktipada Rajguru novel Naya Basat which he written based on Sundarban. The film music composed by the popular Bengali singer-composer Shyamal Mitra.
Shyamal Mitra was an Indian versatile playback singer and music director along with Hemanta Mukherjee and Manna Dey. Mitra had also worked in many Hindi and Bengali films as a music director and film producer. He was the most notable musician of the golden era of Bengali music industry. His baritone voice reflected a range of emotions. Besides recording a huge number of popular Bengali basic songs, he also worked as a playback singer in more than a hundred Bengali films and directed music in more than fifty Bengali films. He also sang in various other Indian languages, like Hindi, Assamese, and Oriya.
Anand Ashram is a 1977 Indian drama film written and directed by Shakti Samanta, based on a story by film director and novelist, Sailajananda Mukhopadhyay. It starred Ashok Kumar, Uttam Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles. This film has a Bengali version too with the same title released on the same day, Samanta has previously made another double version, Amanush (1975) with the same lead actors, however this film didn't do well at the box office. The same story was earlier filmed as 'Doctor' in 1940 starred by Pankaj Mullick, Jyoti Prakash, Ahindra Choudhuri, Bharati Devi.
Sudhin Dasgupta was a prolific Bengali music director, lyricist, and singer. He worked in various other Indian languages, such as Hindi, Assamese and Oriya. His contribution opened a new horizon to the Bengali music for both the arenas of Bengali basic song as well as Bengali film song.
Bhranti Bilas is a 1963 Bengali-language comedy film based on the 1869 play of the same name by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, which is itself based on William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. The film was produced by Uttam Kumar and he played double roles. Others in the film are Bhanu Banerjee who also played dual roles, Sabitri Chatterjee and Sandhya Roy. The film was made under the banner of Uttam Kumar Films Pvt Ltd. The music of the film composed by Shyamal Mitra. The film was remade in Bollywood thrice as Do Dooni Char, Angoor and Cirkus.
Antony Firingee is a 1967 Indian biographical musical drama film directed by Sunil Bannerjee, starring Uttam Kumar and Tanuja on lead. It is a biopic based on the life of Anthony Firingee, a Bengali language folk poet of Portuguese origin. Antony Firingee was a Portuguese-Indian who became a famous Bengali poet musician and fell in love with Nirupoma. She agreed to marry him after revealing her tragic history. But his fame was not enough to overcome their ostracisation and tragedy struck again.
Robin Chatterjee was an Indian music director and sound recordist who scored music for about ninety films. Starting from the 1942 film Parineeta, he has composed music for evergreen soundtracks such as Godhuli, Bipasha, Sagarika, Kamallata, Dwiper Nam Tiya Rang, etc.
Sesh Anka is a 1963 Indian Bengali-language thriller film directed by Haridas Bhattacharya and made by Kalpana Movies, Kolkata. This film was loosely inspired by the 1958 film Chase a Crooked Shadow. The film starred Uttam Kumar in lead with Sharmila Tagore, Sabitri Chatterjee, Pahadi Sanyal, Bikash Roy, Kamal Mitra and others in supporting role. Critics stated this movie as one of the best thrillers in Bengali Cinema. The film was remade in Tamil in 1964 as Puthiya Paravai and was an inspiration for the Hindi movie Khoj (1989).
Surya Sikha is a Bengali romance drama film directed by Salil Dutta. This film was released on 12 July 1963 in the banner of Chhayachhabi Pratisthan. The film starring Uttam Kumar Supriya Debi in lead role and Chabi Biswas, Utpal Dutta and others played supporting role.
Sanyasi Raja is a Bengali drama film directed by Piyush Bose and produced by Asim Sarkar. This film was released on 3 October 1975 in the banner of Usha Films and is based on the real life incident of the Bhawal case. The film starred Uttam Kumar in the title role while Supriya Devi and others were in supporting roles. The music was composed by Nachiketa Ghosh. The film was remade in Telugu in 1977 as Raja Ramesh.

Hrad is a Bengali drama film directed by Ardhendu Sen. The film starring Uttam Kumar, Sandhyarani, Chhabi Biswas, Asit Baran. This film was released on 29 July 1955 under the banner of Rupmaya films. The story was based on Bimal Kar's novel of same name. The film showed to Uttam's one of the most different and critical character, where he played a memory lost patient and give one of the finest performance in his entire career. Uttam received for the first time BFJA Best Actor Award in his career. The famous music composer Manabendra Mukhopadhyay was the music director of the film. This was a mental health and a psychological treatment film. The film became moderate success at the box office.
Gar Nasimpur is a popular Bengali film directed by Ajit Lahiri. Barindranath Das wrote the screenplay and story in this movie. The film was released under the banner of Shadow Productions in 1968 and was directed by Shyamal Mitra. The film stars Uttam Kumar, Biswajit Chatterjee, Madhavi Mukherjee, Ruma Guhathakurta.
