Hindi cinema, popularly known as Bollywood and formerly as Bombay cinema, refers to the film industry based in Mumbai, engaged in production of motion pictures in Hindi language. The popular term Bollywood is a portmanteau of "Bombay" and "Hollywood". The industry is a part of the larger Indian cinema, which also includes South Indian cinema and other smaller film industries. The term 'Bollywood', often mistakenly used to refer to Indian cinema as a whole, only refers to Hindi-language films, with Indian cinema being an umbrella term that includes all the film industries in the country, each offering films in diverse languages and styles.
Mother India is a 1957 Indian epic drama film, directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raaj Kumar. A remake of Khan's earlier film Aurat (1940), it is the story of a poverty-stricken village woman named Radha (Nargis), who in the absence of her husband, struggles to raise her sons and survive against a cunning money-lender amidst many troubles.
Ashok Kumar, was an Indian actor who attained iconic status in Indian cinema. He was considered the first big star of Indian cinema as well as the first lead actor to play an anti-hero. He also became the first star to reinvent himself, enjoying a long and hugely successful career as a character actor. He was a member of the cinematic Ganguly family. He was honoured in 1988 with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest national award for cinema artists, by the Government of India. He received the Padma Shri in 1962 and Padma Bhushan in 1999 for his contributions to Indian cinema.
Bandini is a 1963 Hindi drama film directed and produced by Bimal Roy.It stars Nutan, Ashok Kumar and Dharmendra. The film tells the story of a woman prisoner serving life imprisonment for murder, Kalyani, the all suffering, selfless, sacrificing and strong, yet weak Indian woman. She must make a choice between two very different men, Devendra (Dharmendra), the loving prison doctor, and Bikash, a man from her past.
Prithviraj Kapoor was an Indian actor who is also considered to be one of the founding figures of Hindi cinema. He was associated with IPTA as one of its founding members and established the Prithvi Theatres in 1944 as a travelling theatre company based in Bombay.
Ruby Myers, better known by her stage name Sulochana, was an Indian silent film actress of Jewish ancestry, from the community of Baghdadi Jews in India.

Sulochana Latkar, better known by her screen name Sulochana, was an Indian actress of Marathi and Hindi cinema, who acted in 50 films in Marathi and around 250 films in Hindi. She was most known for her performances in Marathi films such as Sasurvas (1946), Meeth Bhakar (1949), Vahinichya Bangdya (1953), Dhakti Jaoo (1958) and Sangte Aika (1959) in the lead roles, as well as for the mother roles she played in Hindi cinema right from 1959 film Dil Deke Dekho to the year 1995. She and Nirupa Roy epitomized the "mother" roles right from 1959 until the early 1990s.
Aeeye is an Indian Bollywood social family film. It was released in 1949. Produced and directed by Yakub under Indian Productions banner, it had music by Nashad. The film had Sulochana Chatterjee, Noor Mohammed Charlie, Masood, Jankidas, Sheela Naik, Ashraf Khan and Yakub starring in it. The film was commercially unsuccessful and Yakub called it the "big mistake" of his life.
Zeenat Begum, sometimes known as Zeenat, was a Pakistani singer. She was known as The Queen of Yesteryear for singing songs in films and on radio.
Bharthari is a Bollywood film. It was released in 1944. The film was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi for Navin Pictures and produced by P. B. Zaveri. The music was composed by Khemchand Prakash and the lyricist was Pandit Indra Chandra. The cast included Surendra, Mumtaz Shanti, Kajjanbai, Aroon, Sulochana Chatterjee and Yashwant Dave. It was the fifth-highest-grossing Indian film of 1944.

Yakub Khan, popularly known as Yakub, was an Indian actor born into a Pathan family in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. He is best known for his comic and comic villainous roles.
Ghory and Dixit were a comedy duo comprising Nazir Ahmed Ghory and Manohar Janardhan Dixit. They were active in Indian cinema during the 1930s and 1940s.
Munna also called The Lost Child is a 1954 Hindi social drama film produced and directed by K. A. Abbas for the Naya Sansar banner. The story was written by Abbas with photography by Ramchandra. The music director was Anil Biswas though there were no songs in the film. Master Romi played Munna and the actor Jagdeep appeared as a child artist in the film. The rest of the cast included Sulochana Chatterjee, Shammi, Tripti Mitra, Achala Sachdev, David, Manmohan Krishna, Johnny Walker, Rashid Khan and Nana Palsikar.
Sardar Akhtar (1915–1986) was an Indian actress who worked in Hindi and Urdu films. She started her acting career on the Urdu stage. Her early films were with Saroj Movietone, where she did a majority of stunt (action) roles. She came into prominence as the washer-woman in the role of Rami Dhoban in Sohrab Modi's Pukar (1939). As a woman seeking justice for the death of her husband, it was a breakthrough role for her. A popular song she sang in the film was "Kaheko Mohe Chhede". Her career defining role was as a "peasant woman" deserted by her husband, in Mehboob Khan's Aurat (1940), a role later made famous by Nargis in Mehboob's remake Mother India.
Bibbo was a music composer, singer and actress who worked in both Indian and Pakistani films. She acted in Indian cinema from 1931 to 1947 before moving to Pakistan, following Partition of India in 1947. She started her acting career with Ajanta Cinetone Ltd. in 1933, working with directors like M. D. Bhavnani and A. P. Kapoor. She was one of the top leading ladies of the 1930s along with actresses like Devika Rani, Durga Khote, Sulochana, Mehtab, Shanta Apte, Sabita Devi, Leela Desai and Naseem Banu. She was referred to as "one of the most important female stars of the 1930s and 1940s". Her fame had her featured in the lyrics of a popular song from the film Gharib Ke Lal (1939) sung by Mirza Musharraf and Kamla Karnataki, with music by Sagheer Asif and lyrics by Rafi Kashmiri. "Tujhe Bibbo Kahoon Ke Sulochana", where Sulochana referred to another popular actress of the time. This was the first time a song featuring famous actors was used in the lyrics of a film song.
Master Romi is a former Indian actor in Hindi language films. He was best known as a child actor after his brilliant performance in K.A. Abbas’s film “Munna” released in 1954. “Munna”, the first songless Hindi movie was screened for a select audience including India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Nehru was so moved by child star Master Romi’s performance that he invited him for breakfast the next morning along with entire unit.
