The Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team represents Northwestern State University in NCAA Division I college softball. The team participates in the Southland Conference. The Lady Demons are currently led by head coach Donald Pickett. The team plays its home games at Lady Demon Diamond located on the university's campus. [3]

In 2013, the Lady Demons' home field, Lady Demon Diamond, received a $466,000 renovation including a partially covered grandstand with chairback seating, a new press box, and concession stand. [4] [5]

History

Softball began at Northwestern State in 1979. The Lady Demons have competed in every season since that time. The program has won four Southland Conference regular season titles (1991, 1998, 1999, 2000), five Southland Conference tournament titles (1998, 2000, 2002, 2013, 2014). As conference tournament champions, the Lady Demons won the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Softball Championship tournament. As of the start of the 2015 season the Lady Demons have an all-time record of 924–912–3 and a Southland Conference record of 344–335. [6]

The Lady Demons tie for second most regular season conference championships. The team has also performed well in the Southland conference tournament. At five, the Lady Demons are second in the number of conference tournament championships. In addition to winning five tournament titles, the team has the best tournament winning percentage (.651) with an overall record of 43–23 and has the second most conference tournament appearances of current conference membership at 16. Five Lady Demons have been named the conference tournament Most Valuable Player. Twenty-nine Lady Demons have been named to the conference All Tournament team with ten of those players named to the team multiple times. [7]

The NSU Challenge is an American college football rivalry game played annually between the Nicholls Colonels football team representing Nicholls State University and Northwestern State Demons football team representing Northwestern State University. Both universities are members of the Southland Conference. The NSU Trophy, which is a wooden trophy enscripted with NSU goes to the winning team. Although Nicholls has changed their athletic brand name from Nicholls State to Nicholls in 2018, thus not going by NSU anymore in athletics, the rivalry is still called the NSU Challenge.

The Bearkats are currently led by head coach Garrett Valis. The team plays its home games at the Bearkat Softball Complex located on the university's campus.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals softball team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college softball. The team participates in the Southland Conference. The Lady Cardinals are currently led by head coach Amy Hooks. The team played its home games at the off-campus Ford Park for the first two seasons following the program restart. The Lady Cardinals began playing home games at the Lamar Softball Complex located on the university's campus starting with the 2015 season.

The 2013 Northwestern State Demons football team represented Northwestern State University as a member of the Southland Conference during the 2013 NCAA Division I FCS football season. Led by first-year head coach Jay Thomas, the Demons compiled an overall record of 6–6 with a mark of 3–4 in conference play, placing fifth in the Southland. Northwestern State played home games at Harry Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, Louisiana.

Lady Demon Diamond is the home stadium for the Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team. Located across the street from Prather Coliseum on the campus of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, the stadium features seating for 1,000 fans. Included in the 1,000 seat capacity is a combination of partially covered chairback and bleacher seats. The Outfield Club, located outside of the left field fence, provides additional bleacher seating. The stadium has field lighting, bullpens, dugouts, and a press box.

The 2015–16 Northwestern State Demons basketball team represented Northwestern State University during the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Demons, led by 17th year head coach Mike McConathy, played their home games at Prather Coliseum and were members of the Southland Conference. They finished the season with a record of 8–20, 5–13 to finish 12th place in conference. As a result, they failed to qualify for the Southland tournament.

The Lamar Lady Cardinals soccer team represents Lamar University in NCAA Division I college soccer. The team, currently led by head coach Nathan Kogut, competes in the Southland Conference. The team's initial season was 2007. The Lady Cardinals' home stadium is the Lamar Soccer Complex located on the university's campus. The team began playing home games there starting with the 2009 season. The Lady Cardinals home stadium for the first two seasons was Cardinal Stadium now named Provost Umphrey Stadium.

Amy Deanne Hooks is an American college softball coach and former catcher who is the current head coach at Lamar. Prior to her position at Lamar, she served as assistant softball coach for six seasons at Northwestern State.

The 2014 NCAA Division I softball season, play of college softball in the United States organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division I level, began in February 2014. The season progressed through the regular season, many conference tournaments and championship series, and concluded with the 2014 NCAA Division I softball tournament and 2014 Women's College World Series. The Women's College World Series, consisting of the eight remaining teams in the NCAA Tournament and held in Oklahoma City at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium, ended on June 3, 2014.

The 2021 Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team represented Northwestern State University during the 2021 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Demons played their home games at Lady Demon Diamond and were led by thirteenth year head coach Donald Pickett. They were members of the Southland Conference.

The 2022 Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team represented Northwestern State University during the 2022 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Demons played their home games at Lady Demon Diamond and were led by fourteenth year head coach Donald Pickett. They were members of the Southland Conference.

The 2023 Northwestern State Lady Demons softball team represented Northwestern State University during the 2023 NCAA Division I softball season. The Lady Demons played their home games at Lady Demon Diamond and were led by fifteenth year head coach Donald Pickett. They are members of the Southland Conference.
