Nuruddin Khan is a lieutenant general of the Bangladesh Army who served as Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army (1990-1994), [1] and served as Energy Minister of Bangladesh (1996-1997). He did not pursue a political career after the Awami League government,in which he served,ended in 2001.
Khan graduated from Gurudayal Government College in Kishoreganj. [2]
Nuruddin Khan was commissioned from 20 PMA long course on 17 October 1959. In November 1990,then President Hossain Mohammad Ershad promoted Khan to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army.[ citation needed ] He voiced support for pro-democracy protests that eventually forced Ershad to resign. [3]
A member of the Awami League,Khan was elected MP from Narsingdi-4 of the 7th Bangladesh National Assembly. During his tenure as an MP,in 1996 he was appointed as the Minister of Power,Energy and Mineral Resources Affairs in the Sheikh Hasina administration. Because of his mismanagement,which resulted in power shortages in the country,among other problems,Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina dismissed him. [4] Fuel prices doubled during the period of severe power shortages. Khan was kept on as a "minister without portfolio," enjoying numerous benefits,until the Awami League government in 2001 term ended.
Khan is married and has two daughters and a son. His son briefly served in the Bangladesh Army. Khan and his wife reside in DOHS Mohakhali of the capital Dhaka.[ citation needed ]

Khondaker Mostaq Ahmad was a Bangladeshi politician. He was the fourth president of Bangladesh from 15 August to 6 November 1975,after the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was involved in the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. He took on the role of president immediately after the assassination,praised the assassins as "sons of the sun" and put cabinet ministers loyal to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in jail.
The Jatiya Party is a centre-right,conservative,nationalist political party in Bangladesh and is currently the main opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad,against the Awami League. The current chairman of the party is Begum Rowshan Ershad. On 3 January 2019,the party announced its decision to join the Bangladesh Awami League-led Grand Alliance after having been in opposition for the previous parliamentary term. However,the party backtracked the next day and announced that it intended to remain part of the opposition. Currently,it holds Rangpur out of Bangladesh's 12 city corporations.
Syed Faruque Rahman was a coup member involved in toppling the Sheikh Mujib regime in Bangladesh. He was convicted and hanged on 28 January 2010 along with co-conspirators Sultan Shahriar Rashid Khan,A.K.M. Mohiuddin Ahmed,Mohiuddin Ahmed,and Mohammad Bazlul Huda in Dhaka Central Jail,Old Dhaka,for the murder of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the founder and first President of Bangladesh. Syed Faruque Rahman and his close ally Khondaker Abdur Rashid were the chief organisers of the assassination of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on 15 August 1975. He was 2IC of the 1st Bengal Lancers Regiment of the Bangladesh Army who led a group of junior army officers in-order to overthrew the regime of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and installed Khondaker Mushtaque Ahmed as President of Bangladesh.
General elections were held in Bangladesh on 29 December 2008. The two main parties in the election were the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP),led by Khaleda Zia,and the Bangladesh Awami League Party,led by Sheikh Hasina. The Bangladesh Awami League Party formed a fourteen-party Grand Alliance including Ershad's Jatiya Party,while the BNP formed a four-party alliance which included the Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami. The election was originally scheduled for January 2007,but it was postponed by a military-controlled caretaker government for an extended period of time.
Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Army general who was 12th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 16 June 2002 to 15 June 2005. He was the last officer to serve in this position who had first been commissioned by and served with the Pakistani Army,before the Liberation War of 1971. He served for two years before the war.

Chittagong massacre refers to a massacre of opposition activists in Chittagong on January 24 of 1988. The activists of Awami League who were rallying in the streets of Chittagong that day were attacked by the police during the regime of autocratic ruler Hussain Muhammad Ershad. The then Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mirza Rakibul Huda ordered the police to open fire on the rally that left at least 24 people dead.
The 1990 Mass Uprising,popularly known as '90's Anti-Authoritarian Movement,was a democratic movement that took place on 4 December and led to the fall of General Hussain Muhammad Ershad in Bangladesh. The uprising was the result of a series of popular protests that started from 10 October 1990 to topple General Ershad who came to power in 1982 by imposing martial law and replaced a democratically elected President through a bloodless coup.
The 1996 Bangladesh coup d'état attempt was a coup attempt in Bangladesh. The coup was launched by Army Chief of Staff Abu Saleh Mohammad Nasim against the President of Bangladesh Abdur Rahman Biswas. The coup failed and the Army chief of Staff was dismissed.
The Sheikh family of Tungipara is one of the two most prominent Bangladeshi political families,other being the Zia family. The family primarily consists of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,Sheikh Hasina,Sheikh Rehana and their relatives. Their political involvement has traditionally revolved around the Bangladesh Awami League.
The 15 August 1975 Bangladesh coup d'état was a military coup launched by mid ranking army officers in Bangladesh on 15 August 1975. The officers were part of a conspiracy to assassinate Sheikh Mujibur Rahman,the founding father of Bangladesh,who led the independence struggle during the Bangladesh Liberation War and later served as the first and fourth president and later in between his two presidential terms served as the second prime minister of Bangladesh from April 1971 until his assassination in August 1975. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members were killed during the coup,with the exception of his two daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana.
Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu was a Bangladeshi politician of the Jatiya Party and served as the Secretary General for two terms. He was a Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Chittagong-9 constituency at the 10th Jatiya Sangsad and the Chittagong-6 constituency at the 4th Jatiya Sangsad. He served as the Cabinet Minister for Energy during Ershad's regime in the 1980s. He was appointed an advisor to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in November 2013.
