Qadirabad Cantonment is a cantonment located in southwestern part of Natore, Rajshahi in Bangladesh. It is garrison headquarters of Engineer Center and School of Military Engineering. [1]

History

The cantonment was named after Lt Col Abdul Qadir who was killed in the Bangladesh Liberation war. [2] His son Nadeem Qadir discovered the body in a mass grave in Panchlaish Thana, Chittagong District in 2007; he was reburied in the cantonment in September 2011. [2]

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to provide necessary forces and capabilities to deliver the Bangladeshi government's security and defence strategies and defending the nation's territorial integrity against external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka. Savar Cantonment is a cantonment of Bangladesh Army located in Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The 9th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army is garrisoned there. Corps of Military Police Centre & School (CMPC&S), Army Institute of Business Administration (AIBA), Savar Golf Club (SGC), Savar DOHS and many more establishments are located in the cantonment.

On 25 March 1971, the Pakistani military, supported by paramilitary units, launched the military operation to pacify the insurgent-held areas of East Pakistan, which led to a prolonged conflict with the Bengali Mukti Bahini. Although conventional in nature during March–May 1971, it soon turned into a guerrilla insurgency from June of that year. Indian Army had not directly supported the Bengali resistance but had launched Operation Jackpot to support the insurgency from May 1971.

Mymensingh Cantonment is a military installation, situated at the heart of Mymensingh. It was formally headquartered the 19th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army. Currently, it has the headquarters of Army Training and Doctrine Command, which consists of its Battle Group within the cantonment. The 77th Infantry Brigade under the 19th Infantry Division is also located in this cantonment. The first General Officer Commanding of ARTDOC was Major General Md Zia-Ur-Rahman.

Mustafizur Rahman was a Bangladeshi Army general who served as the Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from December 1997 until 23 December 2000.

Lieutenant Colonel Abdul Qadir was an officer of the Pakistan Army and later ADOS for Mukti Bahini while serving in Chittagong, during the initial period of Bangladesh Liberation War. He was involved in the Bengali independence movement and was arrested by the Pakistan Army in April 1971. He was presumed to have been murdered and in 2008, his body was found in a mass grave.
