Chittagong Cantonment is situated near Bayezid Bostami of Chattogram, Bangladesh. It is the headquarters of 24th Infantry Division. [1] [2] [3]

An Indian army tank captured by the East Bengal Regiment near Lahore in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 is displayed in the cantonment. [4] On 30 May 1981, President Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in Chattogram city by officers based in Chattogram Cantonment. The base commander General Abul Manzur was also accused of involvement in the coup. He himself was killed on 2 June 1981. [5] [6] [7]

The Bangladesh Armed Forces are the military forces of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Chittagong, officially Chattogram, is the second-largest city in Bangladesh. Home to the Port of Chittagong, it is the busiest port in Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. The city is also known as the business capital of Bangladesh. It is the administrative seat of an eponymous division and district. The city is located on the banks of the Karnaphuli River between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of Bengal. The Greater Chittagong Area had a population of more than 140 million in 2022. In 2022, the Chittagong District had a population of approximately 9.2 Million according to a census conducted by Government of Bangladesh. In 2022, the city area had a population of more than 5.6 million. The city is home to many large local businesses and plays an important role in the Bangladeshi economy.

The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch, and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to defend the land of Bangladesh from any external attack. Control of personnel and operations is administered by the Army Headquarters, Dhaka Cantonment. The Bangladesh Army is also constitutionally obligated to assist the government, during times of domestic national emergency e.g. the army helps people during any natural calamity. This additional role is commonly referred to as "aid to civil administration" or, using the Latin form, "Protectio, Transparentia, Reintegratio", in other words, "Protect and Serve".

Bangladesh has undergone several changes of government since the Proclamation of Independence in 1971. Between the first recorded coup in August 1975 and the 2009 Bangladesh Rifles revolt, Bangladesh has been through as many as 29 military coups.

Abu Saleh Mohammad NasimBir Bikrom is a former Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army. In 1996, he attempted a military coup of the caretaker government which was preparing for general elections. After failure of the coup in 1996, he was arrested, placed under house arrest, and subsequently dismissed from service. That year, the Awami League was elected to power in the government. It reverted Nasim's dismissal from the military and later provided him with an honorable discharge.

Muhammed Abul ManzurBU was a Bangladeshi military officer who commanded the Bangladesh Forces operations in Sector 8 during the Bangladesh Liberation War against Pakistan in 1971. He was allegedly involved in the assassination of the then-president of Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman.

Chittagong Cantonment Public College, formerly Chittagong Public School and College is a primary, higher secondary and degree awarding educational institution in Chittagong Cantonment in Chittagong, Bangladesh. It was established in 1961, and administered by the Bangladesh Army. The institution also offers post-secondary education. It has been consecutively awarded the "Best College" award of the Chittagong district in "Jatio Shikkha Shoptaho" by the Ministry of Education in 2016, 2017 and 2018, 2023 and 2024.

Abul Hossain, ndc, psc, is a retired lieutenant general of Bangladesh Army. He served as the Director General of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB). Before that, he served as military secretary to President Md Abdul Hamid and as Engineer-in-Chief at Army Headquarters, Commandant of Military Institute of Science and Technology, Chief Engineer of Dhaka City Corporation, Director of Special Works Organization and Director of Works and Chief Engineer of the Bangladesh Army. Mohammad Ziauddin, BU is a retired Bangladeshi military officer, who was the Commanding Officer of the 1st East Bengal Regiment during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was awarded the Bir Uttom, the country's second highest gallantry award for his outstanding bravery in the Liberation War. His certificate number was 22.
