The principal staff officer, abbreviated as PSO, is the head of the Armed Forces Division, a ministry level joint forces headquarters under Prime Minister's Office. It acts as the high command of the national armed forces. It is currently held by a three-star rank lieutenant general.

Role and functions

The principal staff officer is the head of Armed Forces Division, which is part of the Prime Minister's Office. He is assisted by a PS (acting PSO) and five departmental heads each one star rank military officer from Bangladesh Armed Forces. [1]

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Prime Minister he has the authority, direction, and control over all operational and administrative services. He also, as per government notification, performs the duties of a full-fledged secretary with full administrative and financial authority as that of a secretary in any other division or ministry.

Victory Day is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated on 16 December to commemorate the defeat of the Pakistan Armed Forces in the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971 and the Independence of Bangladesh. It commemorates the Pakistani Instrument of Surrender, wherein the commander of the Pakistani Forces, General A. A. K. Niazi, surrendered to the Mukti Bahini and their Indian allies, ending the nine-month Bangladesh Liberation War and 1971 Bangladesh genocide and marking the official secession of East Pakistan to become the new state of Bangladesh.

The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) is, in principle, the highest-ranking and senior most uniformed military officer, typically at four-star rank, in the Pakistan Armed Forces who serves as a Principal Staff Officer and a chief military adviser to the civilian government led by elected Prime minister of Pakistan and his/her National Security Council. The role of advisement is also extended to the elected members in the bicameral Parliament and the Ministry of Defence. Muhammad Ataul Gani Osmani was a Bangladeshi military officer and revolutionary. His military career spanned three decades, beginning with his service in the British Indian Army in 1939. He fought in the Burma Campaign during World War II, and after the partition of India in 1947, he joined the Pakistan Army and served in the East Bengal Regiment, retiring as a colonel in 1967. Osmani joined the Provisional Government of Bangladesh in 1971 as the commander-in-chief of the nascent Bangladesh Forces. Regarded as the founder of the Bangladesh Armed Forces, Osmani retired as the first full general from the Bangladesh Army in 1972.

Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of Bangladesh Army, also known as Army Chief, is the highest-ranking officer of the Bangladesh Army. The Chief of Army staff has been a four-star rank since 2007. During the liberation war of Bangladesh in 1971, Maj. Gen. M. A. Rab was the Chief of Staff of the Bangladesh Army under the combined command of Bangladesh Forces which served as the origins of Bangladesh Armed Forces and General MAG Osmani was the Commander-in-Chief. After the War of Independence, Bangladesh Army was officially reverted to the Ministry of Defense in 1972, and Maj. Gen. K. M. Shafiullah was appointed the Chief of Army Staff. The National Security Intelligence, commonly known as the NSI, is the principal civilian intelligence agency of Bangladesh. The NSI's headquarters is in Segunbagicha, Dhaka. The NSI is the leading body of the Government of Bangladesh in the field of internal security, counter terrorism, counter intelligence and foreign intelligence. NSI is the largest among the intelligence agencies in Bangladesh, the others being the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), SB, CID, PBI and intelligence directorates of armed and paramilitary forces. Mohammad Abdul Mubeen is a retired Bangladeshi army officer who served as the chief of army staff of the Bangladesh Army from 2009 to 2012. Prior to his appointment as chief of army staff, Abdul Mubeen served as principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division. He served as general officer commanding of two divisions: the 24th Infantry Division and the 55th Infantry Division. He retired from the army in 2012 after serving as army chief.

Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Haq is a retired four star general of the Bangladesh Army. He was the chief of army staff of the Bangladesh Army from 25 June 2015 to 25 June 2018. Before that, he served as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9th Infantry Division and Area Commander of the Savar Area. General Waker-uz-Zaman OSP, SGP, psc born 16 September 1966 is a four star general of the Bangladesh Army who is the current Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army since 23 June 2024. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army. Previously, he served as the 15th Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division. Just over a month after he became the Bangladesh Army chief, amid the Non-cooperation movement protests, he announced the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as the prime minister on 5 August 2024.
