The Chief of the Austrian General Staff (German : Chef des Generalstabes des Bundesheeres) is the highest-ranking military officer in the Austrian Armed Forces and is responsible for maintaining control over the service branches.

Franz Friedrich Böhme was an Army officer who served in succession with the Austro-Hungarian Army, the Austrian Army and the German Wehrmacht. He rose to the rank of general during World War II, serving as Commander of the XVIII Mountain Corps, Hitler's Plenipotentiary Commanding General in the Balkans, and commander-in-chief in German-occupied Norway during World War II. After the war, Böhme was transferred to U.S. custody as a defendant in the Hostages Trial on charges of having massacred thousands of Serbian civilians. He committed suicide in prison.

Lieutenant field marshal, also frequently historically field marshal lieutenant, was a senior army rank in certain European armies of the 17th to 20th centuries. It emerged as the rank of field marshal came to be used for the highest army commander in the 17th century. In German-speaking countries the commander-in-chief usually appointed an "under marshal" or "lieutenant field marshal" to support and represent the field marshal. Amongst his functions as the personal deputy to the field marshal, were the supervision of supply depots and routes, and inspection of the guards.

The Gardemusik Wien is one of nine military bands in Austria and is the seniormost band in the Austrian Armed Forces. Unlike its German counterparts in the Bundeswehr, the band lacks a corps of drums, which is the most essential part to the German format. It consists of 60 military musicians who provide musical accompaniment to the Gardebataillon, of which it is the official regimental band.

Robert Brieger is a General of the Austrian Armed Forces and the current Chairman of the European Union Military Committee (CEUMC). Brieger was previously the Chief of its General Staff. On 19 May 2021, Brieger was selected as the next CEUMC, and selected to take office on 1 June 2022. He took office 16 May 2022.
