The Chief of Defence Force (Somali : Taliyaha Ciidanka Xooga Somaaliyeed) is the professional head of the Somali Armed Forces. He is responsible for the administration and the operational control of all branches of the Somali military (Army, Navy and Air Force) and thus is the direct superior to both the Chief of the Navy and the Chief of the Air Force. The post has however only been held by Army officers and the term limit is 2 years.[ citation needed ] Typically the rank held by the Chiefs is brigadier general, though some, notable Dahir Adan Elmi were granted the rank of major general.

Odawa Raage served from 22 August 2019 to June 2023. He was promoted to major-general in the last days of his tenure, being listed as such in a Somali government briefing of June 21, 2023. [2] [3] He was reappointed on 9 November 2024. [4]

He is the former Minister of Education of Somalia, having been appointed to the position on 12 January 2015 by the former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke. However, he only served 2 weeks when on 17 January 2015, Prime Minister Sharmarke dissolved his newly nominated cabinet due to vehement opposition by legislators, who rejected the reappointment of certain former ministers.

General Abdullahi Anod is a Somali military leader. He is a former commander of Somalia's presidential guard unit. On 25 June 2014, Anod was appointed the new Chief of the Somali National Army.

General Abdirizak Khalif Elmi is a Somali military commander. He is the Deputy Chief of the Somali National Army, having been appointed to the position on 13 March 2013 in place of Abdikarin Yusuf Dhega Badan. General Dahir Adan Elmi was concurrently named as the new Chief of Army. Khalif's term as Deputy Chief of Army ended on 26 September 2015, when he and Elmi were transferred by presidential decree to other positions. The shuffle was part of a larger major national security reform. Khalif was succeeded as Deputy Chief of Army by General Abdullahi Osman Agey, with General Abdullahi Anod concurrently appointed as the new Chief of Army.
