Nyakarongo Central Forest Reserve is a protected area located in Kibaale district, western Uganda [1] approximately 215 kilometers from Kampala, the Capital City of Uganda. [2] The forest reserve covers an area of 3,535 hectares. [3]

Setting and Structure

The forest reserve is located in Mugarama sub-county and Kangombe village. It is situated close to the villages Wantema, Bigaga and Katwetwe. It is located at latitude 0.8378° or 0° 50' 16" north and longitude 31.1548° or 31° 9' 17" east. [4]

Conservation Status

Nyakarongo is a protected reserve area managed by the National Forestry Authority, [1] a government agency responsible for enforcing protection of the ecosystem in all forest reserves and significantly minimizing encroachment and deforestation. [5]

Threats

Nyakarongo Forest Reserve, along with other forests in Kibaale district, was significantly depleted by new settlers and Banyoro in 1990s. The other forests included Kagombe, Kasaato, Nyakarongo, and Ruzaire. [6]

In 2023, 34 persons were imprisoned in Kibaale district for destroying the Nyakarango protected forest. The forestry authority took action due to the worrisome rate of forest loss in Kibaale area. An estimated 1,000 Banyoro encroached on the district's five forest reserves, totaling approximately 5,000 hectares. [3] The arrests were a significant step forward in the fight against deforestation in the Kibaale district. [1] [3]

Nyabyeya Forest Reserve was created to train students in forestry under the Nyabyeya Forestry College.

Ruzaire Central Forest Reserve is a protected high forest located in Kibaale district which is in the located within the Albertine Region. It covers an area of 1194.94 hectares. It is managed by the National Forestry Authority.

Kapimpini Central Forest Reserve is a protected high forest located in Nakaseke district Uganda. It covers a total area of 6,068 hectares (60.78 km2). It was designated as a forest reserve in 1967. It is under the management of National Forestry Authority.

Kikumiro Central Forest Reserve is a forest located in Kabarole district, 300 km2 from Kampala, western Uganda and is protected by National Forestry Authority. Muhangi Central Forest Reserve is a protected area located in Western Uganda's Kyenjojo district. Muhangi forest is a closed tropical forest that protects the banks of river Muzizi. It spans an area of 2,044 hectares. It is also located in the Ugandan Albertine Rift, Muzizi River Catchment Area since the River Muzizi runs along the northern part of Muhangi Central Forest Reserve.

Kapchorwa Central Forest Reserve is a forest reserve located in Kapchorwa district found in the eastern part of Uganda at the slopes of Mount Elgon. It is bordered by Mbale, Bulambuli, and Sironko in the south-west, Nakapiripit and Moroto in the north, and the republic of Kenya in the east. The area largely comprises the sabiny, pokot and the nandi communities of western Kenya. The 0.06 square kilometer forest reserve is located at an Altitude of 2,100 to 2,400 meters above sea level.

Kasenyi Central Forest Reserve is a protected high forest located in Buwekula county in Mubende District in Central Region of Uganda. It was designated a forest reserve in 1968 and it covers an area of 1.99 km2. Its World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA) ID is 40141. It is under the management of National Forestry Authority.

Rwoho Forest Reserve is a protected area located to the south of Bugamba Central Forest Reserve in Rwampara and Isingiro districts in south western Uganda. The reserve covers extensive high ground and numerous valleys, including the majority of the Kyezo valley's western watershed. Muhunga Central Forest Reserve is a protected tropical forest that is located in Kyebando sub-county in Kibaale District in Western Uganda. It covers an area of 4.12 km2. It managed by the National Forestry Authority. It was designated a reserve in 1965. Its WPDA ID is 39992.
