Obelisk Legal Support Solutions, usually known as Obelisk Support, is an alternative legal service provider of more than 1300 [1] lawyers in London. [2] [3] [4]

Obelisk Support uses a flexible 'outsourcing' working model where lawyers work remotely for the client, either on stand-by or as supporting legal advisers. [5] Lawyers are placed with City law firms or in-house on an interim basis, and work as an extension within a business. Obelisk Support uses former city solicitors, many of them women who may enjoy a more flexible schedule (e.g. to raise a family). [6] Obelisk Support also provides a language facility which uses qualified lawyers to translate legal documents into 27 world languages. [7]

History and Development

Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, (former president of The Law Society and the current House of Lords Commissioner for Standards), noted the exodus of women solicitors leaving the profession to have children and argued that the situation will only change if the legal sector invests in targeted career development support for women. [8]

Obelisk Support was founded by Dana Denis-Smith in 2010 [9] to aid both women and men, who take time out of law to have a family. [10] The company was founded on the idea of flexible work in law. [11]

The name of the company was inspired by Cleopatra's Needle in London. [12]

Paul Owers, a partner at private-equity firm Actis and an Obelisk client, documents Obelisk Support’s ethical mission of providing flexible working solutions to professional women and men who take time off work for personal and family reasons. He notes, however, that there is a challenge in promoting the model from a business perspective, given the legal sector’s traditionally conservative approach to innovation in the market. [13]

In 2014, Obelisk Support recorded a revenue growth of 400%. [14] In March 2017, Obelisk Support signed a deal with Linklaters to use its pool of flexible lawyers to provide an additional staffing resource. [15]

Obelisk Support provides legal support to 35 FTSE 100 companies, including Barclays, BT, Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, ING, Intel and Vodafone. [16]

Recognition

In 2018, Dana Denis-Smith spoke on the 100 years of the women's suffrage at Hay Festival [32] [33] and was instrumental in erecting the first statue of a woman, Millicent Fawcett, on Parliament Square. [34] She was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law by the University of Worcester [35] [36] for Obelisk Support's ground-breaking work on alternative models of working for women and for her inspirational commitment to championing women in the legal profession through the First 100 Year’s project.

In 2017, Obelisk Support was the only legal business selected to join London Mayor Sadiq Khan’s two-day trade mission to France. [37]

On 10 June 2017, Denis-Smith delivered a TEDx talk on the topic of How to be remembered at TEDx Royal Turnbridge Wells. [38] [39]

In 2016, Obelisk Support was invited to join Mayor Khan to visit North America and European capitals to emphasise that London was open for business and to showcase some of the fast-growing companies that are part of his International Business Programme. [40]

First 100 Years Project

The First 100 Years project was an initiative launched in 2014 by Obelisk Support in partnership with The Law Society and the Bar Council to capture and celebrate the journey of women in the legal profession over the past 100 years. The project runs for five years and culminates in 2019 to mark the 100th anniversary since the introduction of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919.

In the year 2015, the project was launched at the House of Lords. [41] [42]

Martindale-Hubbell is an information services company to the legal profession that was founded in 1868. The company publishes the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which provides background information on lawyers and law firms in the United States and other countries. It also published the Martindale Hubbell Law Digest, a summary of laws around the world. Martindale-Hubbell is owned by consumer website company Internet Brands.

LegalZoom.com, Inc. is an online legal technology company that helps its customers create legal documents without necessarily having to hire a lawyer. Available documents include wills and living trusts, business formation documents, copyright registrations, and trademark applications. The company also offers attorney referrals and registered agent services.

On 28 September 2018 Roberts Jackson merged with AWH Legal based in Manchester. AWH Legal will continue offering the services of Roberts Jackson in addition to their other legal services. First 100 Years is a campaign owned and managed by Spark21, a charity registered in England & Wales, set up to celebrate the centenary of women being able to join the legal profession in the UK and Ireland as a result of Parliament passing the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act in 1919. Initially, the campaign was launched by Obelisk Legal Support Solutions, in partnership with The Law Society and the Bar Council but has since received the support of all other professional organisations from the Law Society of Scotland, Chartered Institute of Legal Executives and the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the four Inns of Court. The First 100 Years is a five-year project which seeks to discover the untold stories of pioneering and inspiring women in the legal profession to create a strong and equal future for all those in the legal profession. The project was officially launched in March 2015 and runs to 2020, marking the 100-year anniversary of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 and culminating in the donation of the original material collected and created by the project over its lifetime to the LSE Women's Library in 2020. The project has been the public focal point of the centenary celebrations.

Women in law

Women in law describes the role played by women in the legal profession and related occupations, which includes lawyers, paralegals, prosecutors, judges, legal scholars, law professors and law school deans.

Keystone Law is a national law firm headquartered in London, United Kingdom, with offices in several other countries, which offers legal services for business and individuals. The firm was established in 2002, operating under a business model wherein lawyers use a technology platform provided to work flexibly, rather than necessarily working in a physical office space maintained by the firm. In 2017, it became the third firm in the UK to be listed on the London Stock Exchange (KEYS).
