Objects: USA (1969) was a groundbreaking exhibition [1] considered a watershed in the history of the American studio craft movement. [2] It "blurred lines between art and craft, artist and artisan". [3] The exhibition featured a survey collection of craft works by artists from across the United States (including Hawaii). Artists were approached and works chosen by New York gallery owner Lee Nordness and curator Paul J. Smith, the director of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts. The exhibition was funded by S. C. Johnson & Son, which purchased the pieces for the exhibition and later donated many of them to American museums. [4] [5] [6] The Objects: USA exhibition appeared at thirty-three locations in the United States and Europe. The accompanying exhibition catalog Objects: USA (1970) became a classic reference work.
The Objects: USA exhibition premiered at the Smithsonian National Collection of Fine Arts (now the Smithsonian American Art Museum) in Washington, D.C., on October 3, 1969. [7] It appeared at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts (later the American Craft Museum, now the Museum of Arts and Design) in New York City from June 9 to September 3, 1972. [7] Objects: USA eventually traveled to twenty-two museums in American and eleven locations in Europe, [8] including the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Madrid. [9] The exhibition was seen by more than half a million Americans. [8] [10]
"The purpose of OBJECTS: USA is to expose through a tour of exhibitions the objects being created today by artists in materials which have been traditionally called 'craft media,' such as clay, glass, fiber, wood. The timing of this survey could not be more appropriate, for during the past two years connoisseurs have been seriously reassessing the value labels normally assigned to the crafts. Placing paintings and sculpture into a convenient 'fine arts' category, and objects—whether functional or non-functional—into a craft category no longer sustains any aesthetic validity." – Lee Nordness [7]
The show included over 500 pieces by 308 artists, who were unusually—and intentionally—diverse in terms of place, race, ethnicity and gender. They used traditional craft materials like ceramics, fiber, glass, metal, and wood, but in ways that reflected contemporary art movements like abstract expressionism, pop art, and funk art. [11]
Among the artists chosen for the show were Anni Albers (textiles), Sheila Hicks (fiber), Michele Oka Doner (multimedia), [10] Dorian Zachai (weaving), [2] Sister Mary Remy Revor (textiles), [10] Lenore Tawney (textiles), [12] Alma Eikerman (metal), [13] Katherine Westphal (quilting) [14] Alma Lesch (quilting), [15] Merry Renk (metal), [16] Gertrud and Otto Natzler (ceramics), [11] Peter Voulkos (ceramics) Doyle Lane (ceramics), Harvey Littleton (glass), Richard Marquis (glass), [11] Wharton Esherick (wood), Wendell Castle (wood), George Nakashima (wood), Dale Chihuly (glass) and Ron Nagle (ceramics). [10]
The exhibition was featured on the relatively new medium of television, on NBC's Today Show . In addition, ABC aired a one-hour film With These Hands: The Rebirth of the American Craftsman featuring some of the artists. [1] [17] [2]
The accompanying catalog, Objects: USA (1970) [18] has been described as having "iconic, almost mythical status." [2] It became "a bible of sorts", [10] a "blue book", and a "key reference work" for curators and for organizations like Christie's auction house. [3] "It became one of those reference points for almost any type of study of the studio craft field." [2]

Objects: USA did not immediately achieve its stated goal of placing craft on an equal status with painting and sculpture. Craft brought with it uncomfortable associations with race, class, and gender. Visitors might flock to see the show, but New York art critics were not interested in admitting and overcoming entrenched biases about who could be an artist. [4]
Nonetheless, Objects: USA is credited with presenting craft media as legitimate forms for artistic expression, reaching a wide audience both nationally and internationally, and changing perceptions of craft and its makers. [2] The exhibition and the works of the artists in it continue to be referenced by curators, historians, collectors, artists and craftspeople. [1] [19]

In recognition of Objects: USA's continuing importance, the Smithsonian American Art Museum held a symposium on July 19, 2019, to mark the 50th anniversary of the opening of the 1969 exhibition. [20] 2020 marked the 50th anniversary of the 1970 publication of the gallery catalog for the original show.
The Racine Art Museum in Racine, Wisconsin, which holds a number of works from Objects: USA, created three presentations for their exhibition Objects Redux (2019–2020), thoughtfully demonstrating "how the act of making is such a powerful force for the human being". [21] Houston Center for Contemporary Craft also hosted an exhibition in 2019. [2]
New York based gallery R & Company opened a commemorative exhibition, Objects: USA 2020, which featured 50 artists from the original show along with 50 contemporary artists. The show's opening was delayed because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and happened in February 2021. [22] The 2020-21 exhibition was curated by Glenn Adamson, James Zemaitis, Abby Bangser and Evan Snyderman, and was accompanied by the publication of the catalog Objects: USA 2020. [11] The exhibition was on view at the gallery through September 2021.
On September 6, 2024, the gallery premiered the second iteration of the project and reconfigured it as a triennial to showcase contemporary art, craft, and design made in the United States. [23] Objects: USA 2024 was curated by Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy and Kellie Riggs. [24] This edition included 55 contemporary artists, and also accompanied a publication. Exhibited artists include Luam Melake, Misha Kahn, Kim Mupangilai, Joyce Lin, and Venancio Aragon. [25]
American craft is craft work produced by independent studio artists working with traditional craft materials and processes. Examples include wood, glass, clay (ceramics), textiles, and metal (metalworking). Studio craft works tend to either serve or allude to a functional or utilitarian purpose, although they are just as often handled and exhibited in ways similar to visual art objects.
D. Wayne Higby is an American artist working in ceramics. The American Craft Museum considers him a "visionary of the American Crafts Movement" and recognized him as one of seven artists who are "genuine living legends representing the best of American artists in their chosen medium."
Rudolf Harry "Rudi" Staffel was an American ceramic artist and educator.
Richard "Dick" Marquis is an American studio glass artist. One of the first Americans ever to work in a Venetian glass factory, he became a master of Venetian cane and murrine techniques. He is considered a pioneer of American contemporary glass art, and is noted for his quirky, playful work that incorporates flawless technique and underlying seriousness about form and color.
The Museum of Contemporary Craft (1937-2016) in Portland, Oregon was the oldest continuously-running craft institution on the west coast of the United States until its closure in 2016. The museum's mission was "to enliven and expand the understanding of craft and the museum experience." It was known as one of the few centers in the United States to focus on the relationships between art and craft, programming robust shows exploring a wide variety of artists, materials and techniques.
Mary Lee Hu is an American artist, goldsmith, and college educator, known for using textile techniques to create intricate woven wire jewelry.
Anne Wilson is a Chicago-based visual artist. Wilson creates sculpture, drawings, Internet projects, photography, performance, and DVD stop motion animations employing table linens, bed sheets, human hair, lace, thread and wire. Her work extends the traditional processes of fiber art to other media. Wilson is a professor in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
JB Blunk (1926–2002) was a sculptor who worked primarily in wood and clay. In addition to the pieces he produced in wood and ceramics, Blunk worked in other media, including jewelry, furniture, painting, bronze, and stone.
Katherine Westphal was an American textile designer and fiber artist who helped to establish quilting as a fine art form.
Paul J. Smith was an arts administrator, curator, and artist based in New York. Smith was professionally involved with the art, craft, and design fields since the early 1950s and was closely associated with the twentieth-century studio craft movement in the United States. He joined the staff of the American Craftsmen's Council in 1957, and in 1963 was appointed Director of the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, a position he held for the next 25 years. In September 1987, he assumed the title of director emeritus and continued to work as an independent curator and consultant for museums, arts organizations, and collectors.
Joyce J. Scott is an African-American artist, sculptor, quilter, performance artist, installation artist, print-maker, lecturer and educator. Named a MacArthur Fellow in 2016, and a Smithsonian Visionary Artist in 2019, Scott is best known for her figurative sculptures and jewelry using free form, off-loom beadweaving techniques, similar to a peyote stitch. Each piece is often constructed using thousands of glass seed beads or pony beads, and sometimes other found objects or materials such as glass, quilting and leather. In 2018, she was hailed for working in new medium — a mixture of soil, clay, straw, and cement — for a sculpture meant to disintegrate and return to the earth. Scott is influenced by a variety of diverse cultures, including Native American and African traditions, Mexican, Czech, and Russian beadwork, illustration and comic books, and pop culture.
Nancy Morrison Crow is an American art quilter and fiber artist. She is one of the leading figures in the development of the art quilting movement of the 1970s and 1980s, and is also known for her development of certain techniques to allow more spontaneity and expression.
Myra Mimlitsch-Gray is an American metalsmith, artist, critic, and educator living and working in Stone Ridge, New York. Mimlitsch-Gray's work has been shown nationally at such venues as the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Museum of the City of New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, and Museum of Arts and Design. Her work has shown internationally at such venues as the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, Stadtisches Museum Gottingen, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and is held in public and private collections in the U.S, Europe, and Asia.
Jack Earl is an American ceramic artist and former teacher, known for drawing inspiration from his home state of Ohio to create rural pieces “with meticulous craftsmanship and astute details… to where you could smell the air, hear the silence and swat the flies.” Although his works hint at highly personal, intellectual, and narrative themes in an almost unsettling manner, Earl is “a self-described anti-intellectual who shuns the art world." He is known particularly for using his trademark format, the dos-a-dos : “This art form is like a book with two stories… the two seemingly incongruent images prompt the viewer to fill in the conceptual gap through poetic speculation.” His work often involves dogs or the character “Bill”, who is said to be a combination of Earl’s father-in-law, himself, and others. The titles to his pieces are typically lengthy, stream-of-consciousness narratives that suggest the folk or rural lifestyle. These are intended to add another dimension to the artwork. His work has received a notable response over his decades-long career, especially since he is regarded as “a master at reminding us that within the events we take for granted are moments of never-ending mystery and wonder.” Earl continues to live in Lakeview, Ohio with his wife, Fairlie.
Glenn Adamson is an American curator, author, and historian whose research and work focuses on the intersections of design, craft, and contemporary art. Adamson is currently editor-at-large of The Magazine Antiques, editor of Journal of Modern Craft, a freelance writer and a curator. Adamson has held previous notable appointments as the Director of the Museum of Arts and Design, Head of Research at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and as Curator at the Chipstone Foundation.
Nancy Selvin is an American sculptor, recognized for ceramic works and tableaux that explore the vessel form and balance an interplay of materials, minimal forms, and expressive processes. She emerged in the late 1960s among a "second generation" of Bay Area ceramic artists who followed the California Clay Movement and continued to challenge ceramic traditions involving expression, form and function, and an art-world that placed the medium outside its established hierarchy. Her work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Denver Art Museum, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art and Kohler Arts Center, and belongs to the public art collections of LACMA, the Smithsonian Institution, Oakland Museum of California, and Crocker Art Museum, among others. Critic David Roth has written, "Selvin's position in the top rank of ceramic artists has come through a process of rigorous self-examination … what differentiates [her] is that she eschews realism and functionality, indicating a level of intellectual engagement not always found among ceramicists." Writer and curator Jo Lauria described Selvin's tableaux as "elegiac and stylistically unified" works that serve as "forceful essays on the relationship between realism and abstraction, object and subject, decoration and use." Selvin lives and works in the Berkeley, California area.
Ka Kwong Hui, also known as Hui Ka-Kwong (1922–2003) is a Chinese-born American potter, ceramist and educator. He is known for his fine art pottery work, a fusion of Chinese and American styles, and his work within the pop art movement.
Woody De Othello is an American ceramicist and painter. He lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area, California.
Anders Herwald Ruhwald is a Danish-American sculptor. He works primarily in clay, a medium he has been drawn to since he was 15. Ruhwald's work blends references from functional objects to classical sculpture and can take the form of singular objects as well as immersive installations
