Ohio's 24th senatorial district has always been based in Cuyahoga County, but has encompassed different regions over the decades. It now consists of outer suburbs from the eastern to the western portions of the county. It encompasses Ohio House districts 6, 7 and 16. It has a Cook PVI of R+2. Its Ohio Senator is Republican Matt Dolan. He resides in Chagrin Falls, a city located in Cuyahoga County.

Jackson was eligible to run for reelection to a fifth term, but instead chose to retire.

2021 Ohios 11th congressional district special election Election following resignation of Marcia Fudge

On March 10, 2021, Marcia Fudge resigned her seat in the United States House of Representatives after being confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Biden administration. Governor Mike DeWine set the primary date for August 3, concurrent with the special election in Ohio's 15th congressional district. The general election will be on November 2.
