Ohio's 27th senatorial district has historically been based in metro Akron. It now consists of Wayne County, as well as, portions of both Summit and Stark counties. It encompasses Ohio House districts 1, 37, and 38. It has a Cook PVI of R+4. The district was represented by the Senate President from 1978 to 1979 with Senator Oliver Ocasek. Its Ohio Senator is Republican Kristina Roegner. She resides in Hudson located in Summit County.

Incumbent Republican Governor John Kasich could not seek reelection as Ohio governors are limited to two terms.

The 2018 United States Senate election in Ohio took place November 6, 2018. The candidate filing deadline was February 7, 2018; the primary election was held May 8, 2018. Democratic U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown—the only remaining elected Democratic statewide officeholder in Ohio at the time of the election—won his reelection bid for a third term, defeating Republican U.S. Representative Jim Renacci in the general election.

On March 10, 2021, Marcia Fudge resigned her seat in the United States House of Representatives after being confirmed by the United States Senate to serve as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Biden administration. Governor Mike DeWine set the primary date for August 3, concurrent with the special election in Ohio's 15th congressional district. The general election will be on November 2.
