Ohio's 3rd senatorial district has historically spanned vast portions of central Ohio from the Miami Valley to the Scioto Valley, but currently encompasses approximately a third of Franklin County. It encompasses Ohio House districts 17, 19 and 20. It has a Cook PVI of EVEN. The district was represented by Ted Gray from 1951 to 1994, the longest tenure of any member of the Ohio Senate. [1] Its current senator is Republican Michele Reynolds. She resides in Canal Winchester, a city located in Franklin and Fairfield counties.

Tavares previously had served in the Ohio House of Representatives from 1993 to 1998.

The 2016 United States House of Representatives elections in Ohio were held on November 8, 2016, to elect the 16 U.S. representatives from the state of Ohio, one from each of the state's 16 congressional districts. The elections coincided with the 2016 U.S. presidential election, as well as other elections to the House of Representatives, elections to the United States Senate and various state and local elections. The primaries were held on March 15.
