Onayena Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. It has 15,684 inhabitants; [1] its district capital is the settlement of Onayena. Currently the Councillor of Onayena is Mr. Mateus Nelumbu Kamati, a former SWAPO Coordinator in the Constituency. The Constituency's population has grown significantly over recent years, dominated by the Ovambo language speaking people and a small group of San people.

History

In Onayena the village of Omandongo is where the first Finnish missionaries arrived in 1870, including Nakambale Martti Rautanen, and it is also where the Ondonga kings Shikongo shaKalulu and Nehale Mpingana lived and are buried.

Politics

Onayena constituency is traditionally a stronghold of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) party.

In the 2015 local and regional elections the SWAPO candidate won uncontested and became councillor after no opposition party nominated a candidate. [2]

Economy and infrastructure

The main economic activities in the constituency are agriculture and cattle rearing. Omahangu is the principal crop in Onayena, while cattle, goats and donkeys are the farming animals in the area. The constituency has important cultural and historical links. Onayena has a settlement prominent for investment opportunities and has a lot of large virgin land available housing and business investment.

Onayena is the hometown of many prominent people in Namibia, such as the multi-award winning kwaito musician and producer The Dogg, and home to the first Vice President of Namibia the late Dr Nickey Iyambo.

Nehale Senior Secondary School is a public school in Onayena, Oshikoto Region, Namibia. Established in 1976, it is among the oldest secondary schools in the region. Nehale SSS is named after Nehale Mpingana, king of the Ondonga. The school is located at Onayena, approximately 20 kilometres east of Ondangwa.

Marx Nekongo is a Namibian politician and member of SWAPO. He was the Councillor of Onayena Constituency from 1998 to 2015 and the Regional Councillor for Oshikoto Region in the National Council of Namibia from 2010 to 2015. Nekongo is Oshiwambo-speaking and has been born and raised in Ondonga.

Nehale IyaMpingana Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia, named after Nehale lya Mpingana, one of Namibia's National Heroes. It was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, and in preparation of the 2014 general election. Ondangwa Rural was created by splitting the former constituency of Ondangwa into a rural and an urban part in August 2013, following a recommendation of the Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, and in preparation of the 2014 general election. Uuyoka is a small settlement in Onayena Constituency, Oshikoto Region in Namibia, the village has schools including Uuyoka Combined School which comprises grades 1 to 10. The economy is based on substance farming. It is one of the biggest villages in Onayena,neighboring settlements are Oniiwe, Uukete, Oniimwandi, Oniiwe, Ompugulu, Oniimwandi, Omandongo, Onambeke, Uukete, Ethindi, Enkolo, Iikokola,Oniihwa, Okakwiyu, Omadhiya, Okambogo, Okakololo Village, Iihongo Uushinga, Onamutene, Shimbobela, Okaliveva among others. The village is without critical road infrastructures and a clinic, but the school was electrified in 2007.

Oniiwe is a small settlement in northern Namibia, Onayena Constituency situated in Oshikoto Region in the Ondonga area, the village has schools including Oniiwe Primary School, Ambunda Primary School which comprises grades 1 to 7. The economy is based on substance farming. It is one of the biggest villages in Onayena, neighboring settlements are Uuyoka, Uukete, Oniimwandi, Ompugulu among others. The village is without infrastructures such as a clinic, or a road but was electrified in 2007.

Onayena is the district capital of Onayena Constituency north of Oshikoto Region in northern Namibia, situated approximately 80 kilometres (50 mi) north of Etosha National Park.
