The Ontario Rugby Union (ORU) also known as Rugby Ontario [1] is the provincial governing body for the sport of rugby union in the Canadian province of Ontario and a Provincial Union of Rugby Canada. Rugby Ontario governs various levels of rugby (Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, Under-19, Senior, Masters, Non-contact).

High Performance Program

Rugby Ontario is represented on the National stage by the Ontario Blues. This program includes 15's teams at the following ages: U15, U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and Senior; which compete at the Canadian Rugby Championship in championship and festival divisions. The Senior Men's side competes for the MacTier Cup. Also included in Rugby Ontario's provincial program are 7s teams at the U18 level, who compete for the Canadian Rugby U18 7s National Championships.

Representation at the national level

The Rugby Ontario program and its clubs have produced ten High Performance players currently on the Rugby Canada National Men's Team (XVs); 12 High Performance players currently on the Rugby Canada National Women's Team (XVs); five High Performance players currently on the Rugby Canada National Men's Sevens Team; and eight High Performance players currently on the Rugby Canada National Women's Sevens Team.

Senior Men's and Women's Competition

There are ten men's competitions which are sanctioned by the ORU. The Marshall Premiership and Championship are contested by the best teams from the Toronto Rugby Union and the Niagara Rugby Union, and feature promotion and relegation. The lower leagues are run by the branch unions. The winners of the TRU and NRU compete in the Intermediate Cup against the lowest placed team in the Marshall Championship to determine who will play in the Championship the following year.

The Ottawa Rough Riders were a Canadian Football League team based in Ottawa, Ontario, founded in 1876. Formerly one of the oldest and longest-lived professional sports teams in North America, the Rough Riders won the Grey Cup championship nine times. Their most dominant era was the 1960s and 1970s, in which they won five Grey Cups. The team's fortunes waned in the 1980s and 1990s, and they ultimately ceased operations following the 1996 season. The Ontario Rugby Football Union (ORFU) was an early amateur Canadian football league comprising teams in the Canadian province of Ontario. The ORFU was founded on Saturday, January 6, 1883 and in 1903 became the first major competition to adopt the Burnside rules, from which the modern Canadian football code would evolve.

The Toronto Nomads Rugby Club is one of Canada's oldest rugby clubs. The Toronto Nomads are one of six clubs that formed the Toronto Rugby Union and the Ontario Rugby Union in 1950. Training in downtown Toronto, the Toronto Nomads boast three senior men's teams, two senior women's and seven junior squads, running from minis to U18. The senior women's team currently plays in the Ontario Women's League, while the senior men's team currently play in the Marshall Championship, the senior division of Ontario Rugby Union.

The Toronto Balmy Beach Beachers were a Canadian football team based in Toronto, Ontario and a member of the Ontario Rugby Football Union, a league that preceded the Canadian Football League. Spanning three decades, they appeared in four Grey Cup championships, winning twice in 1927 and 1930, and were the longest lasting member of the ORFU.

The Ontario Professional Hockey League (OPHL), sometimes referred to as the Trolley League, and also known as the Canadian Hockey League in its time, was a professional ice hockey league in Canada. Joe Gray is an English rugby union coach for London Scottish in the RFU Championship and a retired player. He played for Harlequins in Premiership Rugby across two spells. He played as a hooker, and previously played for Northampton Saints and Saracens.

Edward Henry Reeve was a multi-sport Canadian athlete and sports journalist. He was on two Grey Cup winning teams as a football player, a Mann Cup championship as a lacrosse player and three Yates Cup championships as a coach for Queen's University. He is a member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. As an athlete Reeve was noted for determination and inspiring team-mates. He acquired the nickname "the Moaner" in later years after one of the characters in his newspaper columns, Moaner McGruffery.

Middlesex Rugby is the governing body for rugby union in Middlesex, England; Middlesex is a historic county of England that covers areas in the ceremonial counties of Greater London, Surrey and Hertfordshire. Karl Franklin Svoboda is a Canadian former rugby union footballer of Czech descent. Svoboda began his rugby career as the Belleville Bulldogs hooker and then played representative rugby with the Ontario Junior XV. In 1981 he scored a try in the final of the Canada Summer Games. He then played with the Ontario Senior Men's Rugby XV, captaining many of the games. Two notable victories came in the national championship over the British Columbia Provincial XV in 1982 and 1995. In 1995, the Ontario Provincial Rugby Team, with Svoboda as captain, was named co-winners of the Ontario Provincial Team of the Year, along with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Helen Kalra is a Canadian rugby union player. She represented Canada at the 1991 and 1994 Women's Rugby World Cup.

Leslie Cripps is a Canadian rugby union player and former captain of the national team. A national team representative for over a decade, Cripps is considered one of the top ten North American women rugby union players.
