Open Letter Books is an American publishing house based at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. It was founded in 2008 by Chad W. Post, the former associate director of Dalkey Archive Press. [1] It specializes in translation, [2] a less-populated field in American publishing. [3]
Open Letter is a literary press that publishes ten books annually—mostly novels and short stories, and one book of poetry. [4] The press also runs Three Percent, an extensive online resource for literature in translation, which presents the yearly Best Translated Book Award. [5] The press has received funding perennially from the National Endowment for the Arts, as well as from the University of Rochester, New York State Council on the Arts, Amazon.com, and a variety of international foundations and individuals. [6] At present, they have published around a hundred books from over twenty different languages. [7]
Past publications include the works of Marguerite Duras, Can Xue, Rodrigo Fresán, Sara Mesa, Bae Suah, Kristín Ómarsdóttir, and Bragi Ólafsson.
The Press is affiliated with the Literary Translation Studies program at the University of Rochester. [3] Its current editors are Chad W. Post, Kaija Straumanis, and Anastasia Nikolis (poetry). Decisions on publication are made jointly by Open Letter's editorial board and executive committee and manuscripts are acquired both through open submission and solicitation. [8]
Rosmarie Waldrop is an American poet, novelist, translator, essayist and publisher. Born in Germany, she has lived in the United States since 1958 and has settled in Providence, Rhode Island since the late 1960s. Waldrop is a co-editor and publisher of Burning Deck Press.

Jonas Zdanys is a bilingual poet, a leading translator of modern Lithuanian fiction and poetry into the English language., and a literary theorist whose writings on translation theory reinforce a conservative humanistic literary agenda. He was born in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1950, a few months after his parents arrived in the United States from a United Nations camp for Lithuanian refugees. He is a graduate of Yale University and earned a Ph.D. in English literature from the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he studied with Robert Creeley among other writers.
Milkweed Editions is an independent nonprofit literary publisher that originated from the Milkweed Chronicle literary and arts journal established in Minneapolis in 1979. The journal ceased and the business transitioned to publishing. It releases eighteen to twenty new books each year in the genres of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. Milkweed Editions annually awards three prizes for poetry: the Lindquist & Vennum Prize for Poetry, the Jake Adam York Prize, and they are a partner publisher for the National Poetry Series. The PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants were established in 2003 by PEN America following a gift of $730,000 by Michael Henry Heim, a noted literary translator. Heim believed that there was a 'dismayingly low number of literary translations currently appearing in English'. The Grants' purpose is to promote the publication and reception of translated world literature in English. Grants are awarded each year to a select number of literary translators based on quality of translation as well as the originality and importance of the original work. The Fund's mission is to promote the publication and reception of world literature.
