The Order "For Merit to the Republic of Dagestan" (Russian : Орден «За заслуги перед Республикой Дагестан»), is the highest meritorious order awarded by the Dagestani government for exemplary service in accordance with Article 7.2 of the Law No. 6 “On State Awards of the Republic of Dagestan”.

His appointment by the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev was approved by the parliament of Dagestan on 10 February 2010. Magomedov is an ethnic Dargin. His father, Magomedali Magomedov, served as President of Dagestan between 1987 and 2006. It is his stated ambition as president to consolidate and modernise the republic to counter the threat of Islamic extremism, in particular the attempts made to undermine and terrorise the republic by supporters of the so-called Caucasus Emirate. Abdulmanap Magomedovich Nurmagomedov was a Russian military veteran, former judoka and combat sports coach. In September 2019, he was named by the Russian Book of Records as the most successful combat sambo coach in the country. He was the head coach of Eagles MMA and had coached two UFC champions, his son Khabib Nurmagomedov as well as Islam Makhachev.

Despite its relatively small population of approximately 3.1 million, the Republic of Dagestan has historically produced a disproportionate number of Olympic and world champions in freestyle wrestling. The first wrestler from Dagestan to win a world title was five-time freestyle wrestling world champion, Ali Aliyev. The republic has also produced a number of world champions in sambo, the third international style of wrestling to be recognized by UWW.
