Ahangama Withanage Oswin Nandimithra Abeyagoonasekera [1] (known as Ossie Abeygunasekera; died 1994) was a member of Parliament and chairman and the leader of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya or Party. [2] He was assassinated by a female suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) while attending an election rally in support of Gamini Dissanayake, for the presidential election of 1994. [3] He was an alumnus of Ananda College, St.Benedict's College, Colombo.

He was arrested as a Naxalite prisoner in 1982 along with Vijaya Kumaratunga for printing the "Rice ration book". In 1986, he negotiated with the LTTE for a peaceful solution of the ethnic conflict and for the release of the Sri Lankan soldiers who was captured. After the death of his close friend Vijaya Kumaratunga, founder of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, he became the party's leader in 1988 until his death in 1994. He contested the presidential election in 1989, creating the United Socialist Alliance (USA). During the 1989 youth insurrection in Sri Lanka, there were several failed assassination attempts to his life. His political party lost the most members, 114 lives, during the insurrection. He was an excellent orator and a visionary political leader. In 1994 he was elected to parliament under the United National Party ticket.

Ossie Abeyagunasekera's father, A. W. A. Abeyagunasekera, was also a politician, member of the Colombo Municipal Council and the chairman of Sri Lanka Ports Authority. A.W.A. Abeyagunasekera defeated in Kelaniya by R. S. Perera in the 1960s. A. W. A. Abeyagunasekera died in the Air India Flight 855 crash in Mumbai. [4]

Ossie Abeyagunasekera was married with one child, Asanga Abeyagoonasekera, who was the founding director general of the Institute of National Security Studies Sri Lanka. [5]

The 1987–1989 JVP insurrection, also known as the 1988–1989 revolt or the JVP troubles, was an armed revolt in Sri Lanka, led by the Marxist–Leninist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, against the Government of Sri Lanka. The insurrection, like the previous one in 1971, was unsuccessful. The main phase of the insurrection was a low-intensity conflict that lasted from April 1987 to December 1989. The Batalanda detention centre was an alleged detention centre located within the Batalanda Housing Scheme of the State Fertiliser Corporation in the village of Butalanda, situated in the Biyagama Electorate. It was used by the Counter Subversive Unit of the Sri Lanka Police during the 1987–89 JVP insurrection to detain persons who were linked to or suspected to have links to the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), as part of the counterinsurgency campaign launched by the United National Party (UNP) government led by President Ranasinghe Premadasa.

Vijaya Kumaratunga, Sri Lankan politician and founder of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya, was assassinated by an assassin of the militant organization Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya (DJV) on February 16, 1988, while attempting to leave his home in Polhengoda in Colombo.

On December 18, 1999, the 5th President of Sri Lanka, Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, was wounded in a coordinated bomb blast that was attempting to take her life. Kumaratunga had been president for one-term, and was campaigning for her second term in office in the 1999 presidential election. Upon leaving her final election rally at Town Hall in the country's capital of Colombo, she was caught in an explosive attack planned by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Assassination of Gamini Dissanayake</span> 1994 murder of Sri Lankan presidential candidate

On 24 October 1994, Sri Lankan parliamentarian Gamini Dissanayake was assassinated by a suicide bomber sent by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Dissanayake was Leader of the Opposition in parliament, and the United National Party's nominee for that year's presidential election. The explosion, set off at a late-night campaign rally in northern Colombo, killed a total of 52 and injured more than 200, with 75 sustaining serious injuries. Among the dead were several other key members of Dissanayake's party.
