Otley Bridge is a seven arch stone bridge that crosses the River Wharfe in Otley, England. [2] The original bridge was completed in 1229 and has been repaired and upgraded multiple times over the years. The original structure was commissioned by the Archbishop of York in 1228 [2] and is now a scheduled monument. [1] In its present form the bridge carries B6451 (Bridge Street) over the River Wharfe, with two-way road traffic and a pedestrian walkway. [3]
In the 13th century, the site in Otley was already established as a crossing place of the River Wharfe due to shallow crossing points or fords. [2] Upon founding the town, the then Archbishop of York Walter de Gray began taking action to expand the settlement. This included the creation of burgage plots for merchants and a market. [4] This as well as the presence of the Archbishop's Palace at the Manor House warranted the creation of a formal river crossing at Otley, to create a more direct route to York. [3]
Otley Bridge, commissioned by the Archbishop of York, was originally constructed as a five arch stone bridge, made from local masonry. The width of the bridge was designed to allow the width of a cart. [2] The areas upstream and downstream have been subject to significant flooding historically, with the earliest record in the region being 1406 [5] and records of damage to the bridge in 1673. [6] The bridge was repaired in later years as it was crucial for mobility in the area. [2]
To accommodate increasing traffic and improve the condition of Otley Bridge, John Gott, Civil Engineer and Surveyor was commissioned to conduct rebuilding and widening works. During this redevelopment (1775-76), two further arches were added to the original five arch span and the western section was widened to increase traffic flow. [2] [3]
To enable both road vehicles and pedestrians to safely use the bridge it became necessary to add an adjoining footbridge to the structure of Otley Bridge. In 1926 a separate concrete footbridge on the eastern side of the bridge was propose however this was rejected due to the Ancient Monument Status of Otley Bridge. A local architect and later the Local Authority proposed bridge widening schemes in the late 1920s and early 30s, which came to nothing. In 1937 it was proposed that the whole bridge be demolished and replaced with a modern single span structure, however this was again rejected for historic preservation reasons. [7] [8] Following World War Two, funds were granted to install other traffic calming measures including traffic signals. [7] A further scheme in 1952 for a footbridge was not constructed due to high costs. [2]
Finally in 1957, a cantilevered footpath was added to Otley Bridge for the sum of £6,200 at the time. However, this solution was later described as 'ghastly' by English Heritage. [7]
In 2006, Leeds City Council, the owner of Otley Bridge, commissioned a new proposal. [9] The report proposed the removal of the 50s footbridge, refurbishment of the bridge and further widening to allow for two pedestrian footpaths. These plans were widely rejected due to costs and a lack of public support. [7]
In 2023, Leeds City Council identified defects to the bridge prompting action to replace the footbridge. While works are conducted a temporary footbridge will be installed further along the river. The temporary footbridge is planned to be in operation in spring 2025 and the new Otley footbridge will be opened by autumn 2025. [10]

Otley is a market town and civil parish at a bridging point on the River Wharfe, in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the population was 13,668 at the 2011 census. It is in two parts: south of the river is the historic town of Otley and to the north is Newall, which was formerly a separate township. The town is in lower Wharfedale on the A660 road which connects it to Leeds.

Barnes Railway Bridge is a Grade II listed railway bridge in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames and the London Borough of Hounslow. It crosses the River Thames in London in a northwest to southeast direction at Barnes. It carries the South Western Railway's Hounslow Loop Line, and lies between Barnes Bridge and Chiswick stations. The A660 is approximately 10 miles (16 km) long, and crosses the watershed from Airedale to lower Wharfedale. For most of its length the road is in the metropolitan district of the City of Leeds; the last 0.4 miles (0.6 km) is in City of Bradford district.
The River Don Navigation was the result of early efforts to make the River Don in South Yorkshire, England, navigable between Fishlake and Sheffield. The Dutch engineer Cornelius Vermuyden had re-routed the mouth of the river in 1626, to improve drainage, and the new works included provision for navigation, but the scheme did not solve the problem of flooding, and the Dutch River was cut in 1635 to link the new channel to Goole. The first Act of Parliament to improve navigation on the river was obtained in 1726, by a group of Cutlers based in Sheffield; the Corporation of Doncaster obtained an Act in the following year for improvements to the lower river. Locks and lock cuts were built and by 1751 the river was navigable to Tinsley.

The Leeds and York Railway was a proposed railway line, promoted in the mid 1840s, intended to connect York and Leeds. The line lost a significant promoter, the Manchester and Leeds Railway in 1845/6 as a result of a non-competition arrangement between that company and the York and North Midland Railway.
Wetherby Bridge is a scheduled monument and Grade II-listed bridge over the River Wharfe in Wetherby, West Yorkshire, dating from the 13th century. The bridge connects Micklethwaite on the south bank to the town centre on the north. It formerly carried the A1 Great North Road but now carries the A661 Boston Road leading to Boston Spa and the south.
Tadcaster Bridge or Wharfe Bridge spans the River Wharfe in Tadcaster, North Yorkshire, England. The road bridge is believed to date from around 1700. It is the main route connecting the two sides of the town and one of two road crossings in the town, the other being the bridge for the A64 bypass. Tadcaster Bridge partially collapsed on 29 December 2015 after flooding that followed Storm Eva, and reopened on 3 February 2017.
Thorp Arch Bridge is a stone arch bridge opened in 1770 across the River Wharfe linking the West Yorkshire villages of Boston Spa on the southbank and Thorp Arch on the north.
The Wharfedale Greenway is a proposed cycleway, footpath and equestrian route which will run along the route of the former Otley and Ilkley Joint Railway between Burley in Wharfedale and Pool in Wharfedale via Otley, West Yorkshire, England. The railway previously connected the extant Wharfedale and Harrogate lines until its closure in 1965. It will also have a branch southwards towards Menston alongside the remaining railway to Ilkley. The rail trail has been planned by Sustrans and the parish councils along the route since 2010 and was approved by Leeds City Council in July 2020.
