Panna Lal Punia,usually known as P. L. Punia,is an Indian politician and Member of the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh from 2014 till 2020. He was member of the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014 and represented Barabanki (Lok Sabha constituency). [1] He is a Dalit leader of the Indian National Congress party. [2] He was also chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes between 2013 and 2016 [3] and as such sat ex officio on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). [4] [5]
In July 2012,Punia appeared in the popular TV show Satyamev Jayate ,hosted by Bollywood star Aamir Khan,to raise awareness of discrimination against scheduled castes.
He was born on 23 January 1945 to Bharat Singh and Dakhan Devi in the Jhajjar district of the Punjab region (now Haryana),British India. He took an M.A. from Panjab University,Chandigarh and a PhD from Lucknow University,Uttar Pradesh. [1] [6] In 1970 he joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS),becoming District magistrate in Aligarh during 1982–85. [7]
P. L. Punia is married to Indira Punia and they have 3 children. Their son Tanuj Punia is a graduate (B.Tech) from IIT Roorkee and has been involved in social work since 2007. [8] He contested in the 2017 Uttar Pradesh election as a Congress candidate in Zaidpur and came runners-up. He has become a spokesperson of the Indian National Congress since then.

Dalit Mazdoor Kisan Party was an Indian political party founded in 1984 by the remains of the Lok Dal. The DMKP was mainly based in Uttar Pradesh. It was led by former Prime Minister Charan Singh. It was founded on 21 October 1984. Kanshi Ram,also known as Bahujan Nayak or Manyavar,was an Indian politician and social reformer who worked for the upliftment and political mobilisation of the Bahujans,the backward or lower caste people including untouchable groups at the bottom of the caste system in India. Towards this end,Kanshi Ram founded Dalit Shoshit Samaj Sangharsh Samiti (DS-4),the All India Backwards (SC/ST/OBC) and Minorities Communities Employees' Federation (BAMCEF) in 1971 and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in 1984. Digvijaya Singh is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. He is Ex-General Secretary of the Indian National Congress party's All India Congress Committee. The 2004 Indian general election in Uttar Pradesh were held between 26 April and 10 May 2004 for the 14th Lok Sabha. The election results were declared on 13 May in which the national parties the BJP and the Congress performed quite badly while the state parties,SP and BSP did very well and fetched majority of the seats. Early polls called by the BJP proved disastrous for the party,although Congress managed to win and form the government at the national level.
