Padmini Devi [1] (born Princess Padmini Devi of Sirmur; 21 September 1943) is the titular Rajmata of Jaipur.

Early life

Ethnically born into the royal family of the Sirmur, her father, Maharaja Rajendra Prakash of Sirmur, presently in Himachal Pradesh, was the ruler of Sirmur from 1933–1964. [2] Her mother was Indira Devi, the daughter of Maharaja Thakore Bahadursinhji Mansinhji of Palitana. [2] She received convent education in Mussoorie and then spent time at finishing schools in London and Switzerland. [2] [3]

She heads Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum as a chairperson. [4] She takes a keen interest in the social activities and welfare of the people of Jaipur in Rajasthan. [4]

Marriage

She married Bhawani Singh, eldest son of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II of Jaipur and his first wife, Maharani Marudhar Kanwar on 10 March 1966 in a ceremony held at Delhi. [3]

Children

Her only child, a daughter, Diya Kumari, [5] [6] is member of Indian Parliament from Vidhyadhar Nagar parliamentary seat, and a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. [2] [7] Currently, she is the 6th Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

Grandchildren

Her only child and daughter, Princess Diya Kumari married to Maharaja Narendra Singh, a commoner and had 3 children with him. Maharaja Padmanabh Singh Of Jaipur who is the current titular king of Jaipur and an established polo player, Princess Gauravi Kumari Of Jaipur who is a feminist also the general secretary of PDKF and Maharaja Lakshyaraj Prakash Singh Of Sirmur who is the titular king of Sirmur from where Rajmata belongs to. Rajmata Padmini Devi became maternal grandmother to these children.

The City Palace, Jaipur is a royal residence and former administrative headquarters of the rulers of the Jaipur State in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Construction started soon after the establishment of the city of Jaipur under the reign of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who moved his court to Jaipur from Amber, in 1727. Jaipur remained the capital of the kingdom until 1949—when it became the capital of the present-day Indian state of Rajasthan—with the City Palace functioning as the ceremonial and administrative seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur. The construction of the Palace was completed in 1732 and it was also the location of religious and cultural events, as well as a patron of arts, commerce, and industry. Prakash Chand Surana was an Indian jeweler, business person, philanthropist and a music connoisseur, known for his efforts to promote Hindustani music. He was the co-founder of Shruti Mandal, a music community in Jaipur and served as its president, under the aegis of which he reportedly attempted to revive Jaipur gharana tradition. Founded in 1964, the forum has hosted, over the years, such musicians as Kumar Gandharv, Ravi Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Bhimsen Joshi and Hariprasad Chaurasia. Born in 1939 in Jaipur in the Indian state of Rajasthan in a Marwari family, he inherited the family jewelry business and contributed to reviving the Kundan meenakari tradition of jewelry making. Surana, who was married to Shobha Devi and had four children- Chandra, Manju, Pracheer & Priti, died on 5 February 2015, succumbing to a cardiac arrest. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, posthumously in 2016, for his contributions to arts. He was also a recipient of Sawai Bhawani Singh Award for excellence in business and industry and Dagar Gharana Award of the Maharana of Mewar Foundation.

Rajendra Prakash, K.C.I.E., 48th direct male lineal descendant from the original founder of the Dynasty, served as the Maharaja of Sirmur State from 1933 until 1964.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Chandramani Singh</span> Indian art historian (1940–2022)

Chandramani Singh was an Indian art historian, textile expert, writer and a museum archivist based in Jaipur, Rajasthan. As a writer, Singh had edited and authored numerous works on museums, culture, and heritage. Her notable works include Jaipur Rajya ka Itihas, Art Treasures of Rajasthan, Performing Arts of Rajasthan: Lok-Rang, and Protected Monuments of Rajasthan among others. She was associated with Banaras Hindu University, the Sawai Mansingh II City Palace Museum and Jawahar Kala Kendra. She had also worked for the restoration of the Jaigarh Fort, Jaipur. She died in 2022 after a prolonged illness.
