Paktor is a location-based dating and networking mobile application that connects mutually interested users and allows them to chat individually or as a group. Founded in Singapore, the app was launched in June 2013, [1] and has over 5 billion swipes to date (October 2015). [2] In late 2013, Paktor launched a subsidiary called GaiGai, an offline dating service that focuses on match-making and dating events. The word 'Paktor' originates from the Cantonese word for 'dating' (Chinese character 拍拖). [3]
Paktor was founded by Joseph Phua and Ng Jing Shen. [4]
Paktor was first launched in Singapore in June 2013. Despite the immature market, there was a lot of interest from consumers and according to a Paktor newsletter, there were 250,000 matches in the first 2 weeks of 2014. [5] The company also shared that it had received over 100 million profile ratings at that time.
The app is also available in Taiwan, [6] Malaysia, Indonesia, [7] Vietnam, Thailand, and South Korea.
In February 2017, Paktor acquired dating apps DOWN, Goodnight, and Groopify, folding them into Paktor Labs, a social app accelerator. [8] [9]
In November 2017, Paktor Group appointed co-founder and chief technology officer Ng Jing Shen as CEO of Paktor Group, taking over from current CEO Joseph Phua. Phua remained in the group CEO of M17 Entertainment which was formed after the merger of Paktor and 17 Media. The company also promoted current head of operations Shn Juay to Chief Operating Officer at Paktor Group. [10]
In 2018, M17 Entertainment sold DOWN, the United States-based dating application, back to its founder Colin Hodge. [11] [12]
In March 2014, Paktor revealed its first round of funding with a US$500,000 pre-Series-A round that valued the brand at US$6.5 million. [13] At this time, co-founder and CEO Joseph Phua was quoted as saying that the app was “easily 10-20 times ahead of the next player” [14] referring to their main markets; Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan and the Philippines.
Series A was secured in November 2014, bringing the total raised to US$5 million. [15] This round was led by Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India. The funds were reported to be used for expansion into different territories and the introduction of new services under the Paktor group. At this time, the size of the network stood at 1.5 million registered users. [15]
The next milestone was the US$7.3 million Series B funding in July 2015. This raised total funding to more than US$12 million and Paktor said its network had five million registered users and 12 million matches a month. [1] There were also 500 million monthly swipes on average across the region. [16]
The startup secured another US$10 million in a venture round with its sights set on expansion in Japan and South Korea. YJ Capital — the corporate venture firm belonging to Yahoo Capital — led the round, which included participation from fellow new investors Global Grand Leisure, Golden Equator Capital and Sebrina Holdings, as well as existing backers Vertex Ventures Southeast Asia & India, MNC Media Group, Majuven and Convergence Ventures. In November 2016, Paktor announced another round of funding in the amount of $32.5 million to expand its focus into new kinds of mobile entertainment. This new raise, was led by U.S.-Asia-based K2 Global and Indonesia’s MNC Media Group, with participation from other, undisclosed investors. [18]
In December the same year, the company announced that it has agreed to buy a controlling stake in Taiwanese start-up 17 Media. 17 Media owns a photo-sharing and live streaming app that has over 15 million users worldwide. The deal was Paktor's first acquisition and comes as the start-up looks to diversify into the social entertainment space. [19]
Paktor announced its next wave of acquisitions in February 2017 with Down, Kickoff, Goodnight and Groopify joining the group and forming the Paktor Labs Division. Paktor Labs will act as an accelerator for social apps with high potential. [20] The dating app next announced its merger with 17 Media, forming a new company called M17 Entertainment and combining all assets and revenue under the new entity. [21]
In 2015, the app appointed Taiwanese actress and social media personality, Ouyang Nini, [22] and Indonesian actor, Junior Liem, [23] as the brand’s ambassadors in Taiwan and Indonesia respectively. A series of visual advertisements [24] were launched with the appointment announcement. At a press conference, Ouyang Nini said that her father, former actor and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taipei City Councilor, Ouyang Lung, [25] approves of her endorsement to use the app to meet new friends. Beyond Singapore, Paktor is available in Taiwan, [6] Malaysia, Indonesia, [7] Vietnam and Thailand.
As of September 2016, an estimated 12 million people in Southeast Asia use the app every month, with an average of 20 million matches per month and over 5 billion swipes to date. [2] There are an estimated 500,000 users in Indonesia alone. [28]
The app has its own localised slogan in Taiwan, "友妳選擇 友你選擇", which means ‘to choose your friend yourself’. [29] In January 2015, Paktor created two telephone booths near the Taipei 101, to encourage passers-by to explore the app and provide assurance that the app is a safe and private way to meet new friends across countries [30]
In 2013, Paktor set a Guinness World record for The World’s Largest Speed Dating Event held in Vietnam. [31] [32] The event drew 600 participants including local celebrities popular among Vietnamese youth. This record was most recently broken by Calgary Speed Dating Inc. (Canada) at Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary, Canada, on 14 February 2014 [33]
Paktor has received widespread news coverage and been featured on TechCrunch, [34] [35] Bloomberg, [36] CNBC Asia, [37] CNN [38] and others. The app was positively received in Singapore when it was launched gaining over 25,000 users in the first month. [39] There were also comparisons to established mobile dating apps like Tinder and how it was a similar product and had the same mechanics.[ citation needed ]
Global Dating Insights (GDI) publication regarded Paktor as one of the dating apps to watch. With relatively little competition in Southeast Asia, GDI assesses that the app to have huge potential, crediting the CEO for having ‘expertly navigated’ the Southeast Asian market with multiple countries each with different cultures, dating habits and languages. In October 2015, Paktor hired two former Meetic senior marketing executives, Jose Ruano and Miguel Mangas, spearheading overseas expansion efforts outside of Asia. The two speak Spanish, which has strategic global importance as 425 million people in the world use Spanish as their first language. Already available in the two most spoken languages, English and Chinese, the hiring acquisitions would allow Paktor to break into European and South American markets. [40]
The conservative nature of Asian cultures has also presented challenges, where regular dating and casual sex is frowned upon. [41]
In 2015, a Reddit post highlighted the vulnerability of the GaiGai website due to the lack of security encryption [42] GaiGai responded that it has since added SSL/TLS encryption. However, some Reddit users commented that more layers of encryption are necessary in order to provide better security for the clientele database. Paktor and GaiGai have since updated their privacy and data protection policy in August 2015 [43] [44]
Garena is a Singaporean game developer and publisher of free online games. It is the digital entertainment arm of parent company Sea Ltd, which formerly used Garena as the parent company name.
Andrey Andreev is a multinational tech entrepreneur. He is known for founding the dating and social networking apps Bumble and Badoo, amongst others. In 2019, Andreev sold the apps' holding company, MagicLab, to Blackstone at a $3 billion valuation. In 2020, he founded social audio app Stereo. His previous ventures include SpyLog, Begun, and Mamba.
Rakuten Viki is an American subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming service. It streams videos similar to other services, but also allows users to subtitle content available in 200 languages as well as providing original programming. Headquartered in San Mateo, California, it has offices in Singapore, Tokyo, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea.
Tinder is an online dating and geosocial networking application launched in 2012. On Tinder, users "swipe right" to like or "swipe left" to dislike other users' profiles, which include their photos, a short bio, and some of their interests. Tinder uses a "double opt-in" system, also called "matching", where two users must like each other before they can exchange messages.
Sean Rad is an Iranian-American entrepreneur and the Founder of Tinder. Rad launched Tinder in 2012 and by 2015, Tinder was the top grossing app in 99 countries, and in 2017, Tinder became the highest grossing app in Apple's App Store.
Whitney Wolfe Herd is an American entrepreneur. She is the founder, executive chair, and former CEO of publicly traded Bumble, an online dating platform, launched in 2014. She is a co-founder of Tinder and was previously its Vice President of Marketing.
Carousell is a Singaporean smartphone and web-based consumer to consumer and business to consumer marketplace buying and selling new and secondhand goods. Headquartered in Singapore, it also operates in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. Carousell is available on both iOS and Android devices.
Bumble is an online dating and networking application launched in 2014. Profiles of potential matches are displayed to users, who can "swipe left" to reject a candidate or "swipe right" to indicate interest. The app is a product of Bumble Inc., founded by Whitney Wolfe Herd shortly after she left Tinder. Wolfe Herd has described Bumble as a "feminist dating app".
Switch was a mobile-only job-matching app that connected candidates directly to hiring managers. Candidates could upload their resumes and connect their social and professional media profiles, but remain anonymous while searching. Users received a daily set of job recommendations that fit their backgrounds and salary criteria, and swipe right to apply. Employers post many jobs on Switch directly, which eliminates the need for third-party job boards and recruiters, and connects job seekers to hiring managers. Switch reveals a candidate’s identity to one employer at a time, only after the candidate matches with that employer. When candidates and employers match, they can chat within the app. Switch is available for iOS, with an Android version in development.
Founded in 2012, Mallzee is a fashion mobile commerce company and shopping application. Its application allows online shoppers with a smartphone to access millions of products from over 100 fashion brands around the world. The mobile app was launched in September 2013 and uses a 'like' or 'dislike' swiping interface and has since been labelled as the 'Tinder of fashion', in reference to the Tinder app. In 2015, the application was launched in the US.
17LIVE is an international entertainment platform. As of 2024, 17LIVE is the #3 live broadcasting platform globally, formed by its flagship live stream app 17LIVE, MEME Live and live stream e-commerce platforms HandsUP and OrderPally.
Match Group, Inc. is an American internet and technology company headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It owns and operates the largest global portfolio of popular online dating services including Tinder, Match.com, Meetic, OkCupid, Hinge, Plenty of Fish, OurTime, and other dating global brands. The company was owned by IAC until July 2020 when Match Group was spun off as a separate, public company. As of 2019, the company had 9.3 million subscribers, of which 4.6 million were in North America. Japan is the company's second largest market, after the United States.
PT Gojek Indonesia is an Indonesian on-demand multi-service platform and digital payment technology group based in Jakarta. Hinge is an online dating application. The app displays potential matches one at a time and allows the user to dismiss or attempt to match by responding to a specific piece of content on their profile. The service emphasizes uploading user-generated content in a variety of formats, such as photos, videos, voice recordings, and "prompts" as a way to express personality and appearance. The app is fully owned by Match Group as of February 2019.
Cake Browser was a swipe-based mobile web browser developed by Cake Technologies, Inc., a tech startup founded in 2016 in Provo, Utah. Cake Browser displayed search results as preloaded web pages instead of a list of clickable links. Results were swipeable across standard search verticals, including web search, image search, video search, news, and shopping. In 2017, Cake Browser launched in test markets within Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Taiwan. It launched globally in 2018. Cake Technologies announced in 2018 that it had raised $5 million in funding for Cake Browser led by Peak Ventures with participation from Pelion Venture Partners and Kickstart Seed Fund.
Sea Limited is a tech conglomerate headquartered in Singapore. Established in 2009 by Forrest Li, Sea was initially founded as Garena, a game development and publishing company known for its Free Fire title. The company rebranded itself under the present-day Sea brand in May 2017 after securing funding worth US$550 million, although the Garena brand was retained for its digital entertainment arm. Sea has over 67,000 employees, as of 2022.
DOWN is a location-based social networking and online dating application for users looking for casual relationships and hookups. Users can swipe up for more serious dating, swipe down for casual hookups, or left to pass, and continue to the next profile. DOWN bills itself as a open-minded, sex-positive alternative to other dating apps.
Jigsaw is a personality-based online dating application. The face of the user in this application is hidden using a digital jigsaw puzzle and the face reveals piece by piece through profile interactions and message exchanges. The concept was granted a US patent in early 2021.
Joseph Phua is a Singaporean-Taiwanese entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of the dating app Paktor and co-founder and chairman of the live streaming platform 17LIVE Group. He is also the founder of Next Apple News and chairman of the single family office Turn Capital.
