Pankaj Chandra is an Indian educationist, author and academic. He was Director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, from 2007 to 2013 and since 2014 has been the Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Management of Ahmedabad University in Ahmedabad.

Early life and education

Pankaj Chandra was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his schooling at St. Joseph's High School in 1978. He holds a BTech degree from the Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, and a PhD from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, United States.

Career

Chandra started his career as an Assistant Professor at McGill University and later served as a faculty at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Thereafter, he served as the Director of Indian Institute of Management Bangalore from 2007 to 2013, and later as professor of production and operations management. [1] In 2014 he became Vice Chancellor and Chairman of the Board of Management of Ahmedabad University. [2]

He has served on a number of Government of India committees: the Committee on Clusters for Development of the Informal Sector, [3]  and before that the Committee on Rejuvenation of Higher Education (Yashpal Committee) [4] that re-examined the Indian Higher Education system and the Committee on the Autonomy of Central Institutions. [5] He was a member of two steering committees constituted by the Planning Commission of India for 12th Plan Development, one on Higher & Technical Education (where he also chaired the Sub-Committee on Student Financial Aid), and the other on Industry, [6]  and of the Central Advisory Board of Education subcommittee on Teacher Education. [7] He has been a member of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. [8] He is a founding member of the Association for Democratic Reforms. [9]

Chandra has been involved in several startups, has been a consultant to Indian and multi-national firms, and serves on the Boards and Academic Councils of several firms and institutions, including Mindtree, [10] BIRAC, [11] National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, [12] Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, [13] Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology, Bangalore, [14] Film & Television Institute of India, Pune, Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur, [15] International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology Dharwad, [16] and Banaras Hindu University.[ citation needed ]

Books

A reviewer in The Wire called his Building Universities That Matter "an impressively detailed look at the  ordeal that  higher education is for the country [that] takes into account many dimensions". [17] The Indian Express reviewer, however, wrote: "It must, however, be said that Prof Chandra paints with a broad brush. His macro-generalisations about the social pathologies of major university systems, which also reinforces their bleak future, do not match with the history and diversities of Indian educational institutions." [18]

Banaras Hindu Universitylisten  (BHU) is a collegiate, central, and research university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, and founded in 1916. The university incorporated the Central Hindu College, founded by Indian Home Rule-leaguer and Theosophist, Annie Besant in 1898. After Besant and her associates were marginalized, the university was established by Madan Mohan Malaviya with the financial support of the maharaja of Dharbhanga Rameshwar Singh, the maharaja of Benares Prabhu Narayan Singh, and the lawyer Sunder Lal. With over 30,000 students, and 18,000 residing on campus, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. The university is one of the eight public institutions declared as an Institute of Eminence by the Government of India.

He was one of the founding trustees of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation headed by Sonia Gandhi with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and other distinguished members as its trustees. He began working with the then Madras Electricity Board in 1944. Later he had the privilege of working directly with India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Planning Commission from 1954 in the Second Five Year plan incharge of power projects and then with former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Sastri, Indira Gandhi, Morarji Desai, Rajiv Gandhi and Manmohan Singh in various positions in the Government of India.

National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is a ranking methodology adopted by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, to rank institutions of higher education in India. The framework was approved by the erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development (now, Ministry of Education) and launched by the Minister on 29 September 2015.

N. Srinivasa Iyer Ramaswamy (1926–2012), popularly known as Cartman Ramaswamy, was an Indian engineer, educationist, management academic and writer, and the founder director of the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. He was the founder of Centre for Action, Research and Technology for Man, Animal and Nature (CARTMAN), a non governmental organization working for region-relevant and appropriate technology transfer to rural areas and Indian Heritage Academy, an organization involved in propagating Indian cultural traditions. He was also the founder chairman of the Adarsh Vidya Kendra (AVK) Group of educational institutions. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 2006, for his contributions to society.

Maneklal Sankalchand Thacker (1904–1998) was an Indian power engineer, academic and the director general of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the largest research and development organization in India. He served as a secretary at the Ministry of Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs (1957–62) and sat in the Planning Commission of India as a member from 1962 to 1967. He was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1955, for his contributions to literature and science education.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Subhash Chandra Lakhotia</span>

Subhash Chandra Lakhotia is an Indian cytogeneticist, academic, Distinguished Professor of zoology, and INSA senior scientist at Banaras Hindu University. He is known for his pioneering researches on Drosophila with regard to its chromosome organization and replication. A Raja Ramanna fellow of the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Atomic Energy, he is an elected fellow of all three major Indian science academies: Indian National Science Academy, Indian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences, India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1989, for his contributions to biological sciences.
