Police General Pao Sarasin (c. 1929 –March 7,2013) was a Thai politician and former police officer. Sarasin served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand,as well as the country's Interior Minister,in 1992. [1] [2]
Pao Sarasin was the son of former Prime Minister of Thailand Pote Sarasin and his wife,Thanpuying Siri Sarasin. [2] He was one of three brothers,including Pong Sarasin and Arsa Sarasin. Pao Sarasin graduated from Vajiravudh College,a boarding school in Bangkok. [2] He then moved to the United States,where he received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Johns Hopkins University and a second bachelor's degree from the University of California in criminology. [2]
Sarasin enlisted the Royal Thai Police in 1954,rising to the rank of police general during his career. [2] He served as the Chief of the force's Office of the Narcotics Control Board from 1978 until 1983. [1] In 1987,he became the Chief of the Royal Thai Police. [1] [2]
In 1992,Sarasin briefly held the posts of Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister under the Royal Thai Army military junta and the post-coup government of former Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun. [1] [2]
During his later life,Sarasin served as the council presidents of both Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai province and Khon Kaen University in Khon Kaen province. [1]
Pao Sarasin died at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok after a month-long hospitalization for a blood infection on March 7,2013,at the age of 83. [1] A royal bathing rite ceremony for Sarasin was held at the Wat Benchamabophit with Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn in attendance representing the royal family. [1] [2] He was survived by his wife,Thapuying Tawika Sarasin,and three sons,including Thai television host,Kanit Sarasin. [1]
Khon Kaen is the capital of Khon Kaen province and the fourth-largest city in Thailand. It is one of the four major cities of Isan,Northeast Thailand,also known as the "big four of Isan",the others being Udon Thani,Nakhon Ratchasima,and Ubon Ratchathani.
Udon Thani province is one of Thailand's seventy-six provinces (changwat) which lies in upper northeastern Thailand,also called Isan. It is bordered by the provinces of Nong Khai to the north,Sakon Nakhon to the east,Kalasin province to the southeast,Khon Kaen to the south,and Loei and Nong Bua Lamphu to the west. It occupies an area of 11,072 km2 (4,275 sq mi). The total forest area is 1,131 km2 (437 sq mi) or 10.2 percent of provincial area. Thanom Kittikachorn was Prime Minister of Thailand from 1963 to 1973,military officer,who supported and initiated military coups and became Thailand's defence minister. He rose to power when he staged a self-coup,until public protests which exploded into violence forced him to step down. His return from exile in 1976 sparked protests which led to a massacre of demonstrators,followed by a military coup.
Pote Sarasin was the ninth prime minister of Thailand from September 1957 to December 1957. He belonged to the influential Sarasin family. He served as foreign minister from 1949 to 1950 and then served as ambassador to the United States. In September 1957 when Sarit Thanarat seized power in a military coup,he appointed Pote to be the Prime Minister of Thailand. He resigned in December 1957. Pote also served as the first Secretary General of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization from September 1957 until 1963.
Prem Tinsulanonda was a Thai military officer,politician,and statesman who served as the Prime Minister of Thailand from 3 March 1980 to 4 August 1988,during which time he was credited with ending a communist insurgency and presiding over accelerating economic growth. As president of the Privy Council,he served as Regent of Thailand from the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej on 13 October 2016 until 1 December 2016,when Vajiralongkorn was proclaimed King. At the age of 98,Prem was the longest-living Thai Prime Minister. He is also the oldest regent of any country,surpassing Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold's record,when he became the regent for king Rama X.
Chavalit Yongchaiyudh,also known as "Big Jiew",is a Thai politician and retired army officer. From 1986 to 1990,he was the Commander-in-chief of the Royal Thai Army (RTA),and Supreme Commander of the Royal Thai Armed Forces from 1987 to 1990. In 1990,he founded the New Aspiration Party which he led until 2002. He was Thailand's 22nd prime minister from 1996 to 1997. At various times he has held the positions of Deputy Prime Minister,Minister of Defence,Minister of the Interior,Minister of Labour and Leader of the Opposition.

Banharn Silpa-archa was a Thai politician. He was the Prime Minister of Thailand from 1995 to 1996. Banharn made a fortune in the construction business before he became a Member of Parliament representing his home province of Suphan Buri. He held different cabinet posts in several governments. In 1994,he became the leader of the Thai Nation Party. In 2008,the party was dissolved by the Constitutional Court and Banharn was banned from politics for five years.
The Royal Thai Police (RTP) is the national police force of Thailand. The RTP employs between 210,700 and 230,000 officers,roughly 17 percent of all civil servants. The RTP is frequently recognized as the fourth armed force of Thailand since their tradition,concept,culture,skill,and training are relatively similar to the army and most of their officer cadets need to graduate from the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School before entering the Royal Thai Police Cadet Academy. Officers also undergo paramilitary training similar to the army but with an additional focus on law enforcement.
Khon Kaen Wittayayon School is a public school located in Khon Kaen Province,Thailand. It admits secondary students. Founded in 1897 as a boys' school for Khon Kaen Province,it became the first coeducational school in Khon Kaen. The school's former names were "Khon Kaen (boys') School" and "That Wittayakhan Temple School". The school's first principal was Mr. Tub Chimma.
Somsak Kiatsuranont is a Thai politician of the Pheu Thai Party. He served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Thailand,also the President of the National Assembly of Thailand ex officio,from 3 August 2011 until 9 December 2013.
Pong Sarasin was a Thai businessman and politician,who served under Major General Chatichai Choonhavan's cabinet,acting as Deputy Prime Minister along with General Tienchai Sirisumpan in 1988.
The Sarasin family refers to a wealthy assimilated Thai Chinese business clan that rose to prominence during the 19th century. The family monopolised a number of bureaucratic offices and established a number of key businesses,one of which –the Thai Pure Drinks Co. Ltd –remains to this day and is co-owned by the family. The entrenched status of the Sarasin clan has been noted by many Thai historians and sociologists as exemplifying the successful integration of Chinese immigrants in Thailand throughout the 19th and 20th centuries,and their descendants' subsequent influence on Thailand's economy and politics.
Krasae Chanawongse is a Thai physician,professor of medicine,and politician. He is the recipient of the 1973 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership. In 1995,he served as Foreign Minister of Thailand. From 2001 to 2005 he was Minister to the Office of the Prime Minister and advisor of Thaksin Shinawatra.
Surapong Tovichakchaikul was a Thai politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand from 2011 to 2014. He used to be party-list MP and Pheu Thai Party deputy leader.
Thanat Khoman was a Thai diplomat and politician. He was foreign minister from 1959 to 1971,leader of the Democrat Party from 1979 to 1982,and deputy prime minister from 1980 to 1983. He died at the age of 101 on 3 March 2016,a couple of months shy of his 102nd birthday.
Charupong Ruangsuwan is a Thai civil servant and politician. Since October 2012 he has been the chairman of the Pheu Thai Party. From January to October 2012,he was the Minister of Transport and Communication,from October 2012 until the military coup d'état in May 2014 the Minister of Interior of Thailand.
Jatupat Boonpattararaksa,commonly known as Pai Dao Din is a Thai human rights defender and political activist,who was arrested on 3 December 2016 on charges of Lèse-majesté in Thailand,the first such case under King Vajiralongkorn,following which he faced a secret trial and was then imprisoned. He has been charged and imprisoned multiple times,including for sedition,and most recently,on 9 March 2021,was charged and imprisoned for lese majesty a second time. Jatupat is presently affiliated with the Free People movement.
Arsa Sarasin is a Thai diplomat and businessman who served as Principal Private Secretary to King Bhumibol Adulyadej until he retired in 2012.
