Gothenburg is the gubernatorial seat of Västra Götaland County in Sweden. It is the second-largest city in Sweden, after the capital Stockholm, and the fifth-largest in the Nordic countries. It is situated by the Kattegat on the west coast of Sweden, with a population of approximately 600,000 in the city proper and about 1.1 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area.

The Gothenburg discothèque fire was caused by an arson attack on 29 October 1998, which occurred on premises located on Hisingen island in Gothenburg, Sweden. The premises had been rented for the night by an organization catering to the Macedonian community in Gothenburg for the purpose of hosting a discothèque. At the time of the fire, 375 people aged 12–25 were present, the vast majority of whom had various ethnic minority backgrounds. The fire department had estimated the building could only hold up to 150. In all, 63 were killed and 213 injured.

The mosque is administered by the Somali-dominated Islamic Sunni Centre Denomination and advocates the Salafi movement of Islam. It was created with funds from Saudi Arabia.
Musikhjälpen is a Swedish televised benefit performance radio show marathon. The annually recurring show is a charity fundraiser for a chosen cause, the cause is changed each year. Three radio hosts or television personalities are locked inside a glass building for 144 hours. Each presenter acts as a host for eight hours respectively, totaling three shifts per day. It is broadcast in December, during one week, with dates varying each year.

The boxing tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 21 August 2016 at the Pavilion 6 of Riocentro. However, boxing at the games was overshadowed with controversy after there were doubts raised that results in certain bouts had been manipulated. These concerns were upheld in a report published in 2021.
Romeo Brin is a retired amateur Filipino boxer. He represented the Philippines in three editions of the Olympic Games, and has captured numerous medals in both lightweight and light-welterweight divisions at the Southeast Asian Games and at the Asian Championships. Throughout his sporting career, Brin has been training for Team Caltex Boxing Club under his head coach and mentor Nolito Velasco.

In boxing she held the WBC female light middleweight title from 2014 to 2016, and has challenged once for the undisputed female welterweight championship in 2017. As of September 2020, she is ranked as the world's fourth best active light-middleweight by The Ring and seventh by BoxRec.
Klara Svensson is a Swedish professional boxer. She held the WBC interim light-welterweight title from 2014 to 2015, the WBC interim welterweight title from September 2016 to February 2017, and challenged for the undisputed welterweight title in the same month. As an amateur she is a five-time Swedish national champion, a two-time medallist at the European Championships and a three-time medallist at the World Championships, all in the light-welterweight division.

Elin Krantz was a Swedish 27-year-old woman who was murdered in the Biskopsgården district of Gothenburg on 26 September 2010. Krantz was murdered by Ephrem Yohannes, a 23-year-old African, in Biskopsgården where her body was found.
The 2017 Gothenburg Synagogue attack took place on 9 December 2017 when individuals in a large gang threw firebombs at the synagogue in Gothenburg, which hosted an event with about 40 youth inside. The people inside fled to the basement but nobody was hurt. The incendiaries started a fire among the parked vehicles in the yard but the building did not catch fire. Of the about ten masked individuals at the scene, two stateless Palestinians and one Syrian was later identified and were sentenced to jail for having committed an act or terrorism and hate crime.

Gasklockan was a gasometer in Gothenburg, Sweden. It was 81 meters tall and stored up to 100,000 cubic meters of gas while in use between 1933 and 1993. After it was taken out of use several possible uses were suggested, most notably painting it like a can of Coca-Cola for the 1995 World Championships in Athletics. None of those plans were realized with the owners, Göteborg Energi applying for permission to demolish the building in 1999. The building was demolished in 2017 after many complications among them two endangered falcons nesting on top of the building and various processes being appealed.
