The National Security Act of 1947 was a law enacting major restructuring of the United States government's military and intelligence agencies following World War II. The majority of the provisions of the act took effect on September 18,1947,the day after the Senate confirmed James Forrestal as the first secretary of defense.
Peter Pace is a retired United States Marine Corps general who served as the 16th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Joseph Paul Hoar was a United States Marine Corps four-star general. He served as Commander in Chief of United States Central Command from 1991 to 1994,retiring from the Marine Corps on September 1,1994.

She is one of the first women in the history of the United States Armed Forces to be appointed to a three-star grade,the first in the Marine Corps. The United States Senate unanimously confirmed him on July 29,2005,and he was sworn into office on August 16,2005. Kimmitt served through the end of the Bush administration,leaving office on January 20,2009.
