Paul Connolly is a music publisher and music consultant. He was President of Universal Music Publishing Group (UMP) in Europe and the UK from 2005 to 2016. [1] He now spends his time supporting others through his charitable work. [2]

Career

Paul Connolly was born in Basildon, Essex. After graduating from Queen Mary University in London with a degree in economics, he looked for work in the music business from a bedsit above a butcher's shop in Mile End, East London. [3] He said "All I knew at the time was I didn't want to wear a tie and I didn't want to work on a building site. All I had in the entire world was a large collection of vinyl records, and I thought 'Music industry, that could be quite good.'" [3]

After being hired – and then fired – from his first job in the accounts department at Beggars Banquet Records, he joined MCA Music as an A&R scout in 1988, working under managing director Nick Phillips. [4]

Two years later he signed his first UK number one single, Killer by Adamski, which was released in 1990 and featured Seal on vocals. Killer was named Best Song at the Ivor Novello Awards in 1991. [5] Later that year, Connolly was named as one of the rising stars of the British Music Industry in a feature by Music Week. [6] In 1991 he was appointed A&R Director of MCA. [7]

In 1993, after securing further publishing deals with N.W.A., Ice-T, PM Dawn, Jungle Brothers, Soundgarden, [7] Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails, [4] he became Managing Director of MCA. [7] During his tenure as MD of MCA, he and his team signed artists including DJ Shadow, [8] Air, All Saints, [9] The Chemical Brothers, [9] and Basement Jaxx, as well as The Clash, [10] The Smiths and The Sex Pistols. He became Vice President of MCA Music International in 1997. [11]

When MCA merged in 1999 with Dutch music publisher Polygram, [12] Connolly was chosen to be Executive Vice President for Europe and Managing Director in the UK, [7] to head up the newly combined company, which had been renamed Universal Music Publishing. In 2005, after signing publishing deals with bands including The Streets, The Killers and Franz Ferdinand, he was promoted to UK and European President, [7] and was invited to join the board of the Music Publishers Association that same year. [13]

He oversaw the European side of Universal Music Publishing's €1.63bn acquisition of BMG Music Publishing in 2006, making UMP the largest music publishing company in the world. [14] The same year, Connolly and his team signed Adele for her debut album 19, continuing to work with her on her number one follow up albums 21 and 25 – which cumulatively sold 65 million copies – as well as Skyfall, the theme tune for the James Bond film of the same name, which won both the Academy Award and Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song. During Connolly's career with UMP, the company developed a reputation for signing talent across all musical genres, including Adele, Bastille, [15] The Clash, [7] Chase & Status, Coldplay, Disclosure, [16] Elton John, [17] Elvis Costello, Florence + The Machine, [10] Irving Berlin, [18] Joy Division, The Killers, Lily Allen, Metallica, [7] MGMT, Mumford & Sons, New Order, [19] Paul Weller, Plan B, Sigur Ros, The Sex Pistols, The Smiths, [7] and The xx.

Charities and good causes

Following this hugely successful music industry career spanning 30 years, including 28 years at Universal Music Publishing and 10 years as its President Europe & UK, Paul chooses now to focus more on supporting others. He works with the West Ham United Foundation [20] , the official charity of West Ham United F.C., the football club which Paul and his two children are life-time supporters of and season ticket holders for many years. Each game they attend brings together the family in their shared support for the club.

Other charities he supports include Regenerate [21] , which creates opportunities for young people to thrive, Home-Start [22] , which provides a local community network of trained volunteers and expert support to help families with young children through difficult times, and Re-engage [23] (formerly Contact The Elderly), which helps older people to overcome loneliness and is committed to them being heard, valued and engaged. He also contributes to the Richmond Food Bank [24] and Sightsavers [25] , a charity helping blind children in Africa.

Industry honours

Connolly has been named Music Week's Music Publisher of the Year three times, [26] [27] and ASCAP Publisher of the Year four times. [28] [29] In 2011, he was named number one in the Guardian's Music Power 100 as part of Team Adele. [30]

It was written by Adamski and British singer-songwriter Seal, who also provided vocals, although the original release is credited solely to Adamski. It was released in March 1990 by MCA Records as the first single from Adamski's second album, Doctor Adamski's Musical Pharmacy (1990), and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. The single spent four weeks at the top in May and June 1990 and sold over 400,000 copies in the UK, earning it gold certification. It also reached number one in Belgium and Zimbabwe and number two in the Netherlands and West Germany.

UMG Philippines Inc. is a record label based in the Philippines and served as its regional branch of the multinational music corporation, Universal Music Group. Formerly known as MCA Music, the record label previously retained the now-discontinued MCA name on legal purposes because of a trademark dispute with an unrelated label known as Universal Records, which preempted the rights to the word "Universal" for recorded music in the Philippines. However, the company adopted the moniker "MCA/Universal", much like Universal Pictures' home video unit from 1990 to 1997, to simplify identification, even though no formal "Universal" branding is exercised. Andrew Jenkins is a British-born music publishing executive and the President, Australia and Asia Pacific Region of Universal Music Publishing Group. He is responsible for Universal Music Publishing activities in Australia, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and global society and industry matters. Jenkins served as Chair of the International Confederation of Music Publishers and on the board of directors at AMPAL. He was elected to the board at APRA, Australia's music publishers association, in 2019. Jenkins is a board member of the ICMP representing interest of the music publishing community internationally.
