He won three medals in the team large hill at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships with two golds and one bronze (1982). Pentti Olavi Hämäläinen was a Finnish boxer. He competed at the 1952 and 1956 Olympics and won a gold and a bronze medal, respectively. He won two more bronze medals at European championships in 1951 and 1955. Domestically he won six Finnish titles between 1951 and 1956, two in flyweight, two in bantamweight and two in featherweight division. After the 1956 Olympics he turned professional and won five consecutive bouts. He lost his sixth bout in 1959 and retired from boxing, after which he worked as a mechanic and a policeman. Four of his brothers also competed in boxing at the national level. Pentti Hämäläinen died in 1984, aged 54, of undisclosed causes.

It is set in the Winter War and tells the story of a Finnish infantry regiment from Southern Ostrobothnia fighting on the Karelian Isthmus, focusing mainly on a platoon of reservists from Kauhava. The film was released in Finland and Sweden on 30 November 1989, the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the Winter War, and in the United States in December 1989.

Czechoslovakia's three-Games medal streak, all won by Ludvík Daněk, ended as Daněk finished ninth; the American streak reached 18 Games.

Aatos Ensio Lehtonen was a Finnish association football forward. He was part of the Finnish team that finished ninth at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He was the best Finnish scorer at the national championships in 1935–39, and won two national titles in 1936 and 1938. During those years he scored 109 goals, 25 of them in 14 matches in 1937. Internationally he capped for Finland 19 times and scored 7 goals. He retired in 1947 to become a Finnish national coach until 1955. In 1956–58 he worked at his previous club Helsingin Ponnistus (HJK), and in 1959 returned to the national team. In parallel he worked for the Finnish railways in Hyvinkää between 1956 and 1977, wrote articles for the weekly sports magazine Urheilulehti, and translated books on football training into Finnish. In 1993, he was inducted into the Finnish Football Hall of Fame.
