Perfect Power (foaled 15 January 2019) is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the best two-year-olds in Europe in 2021 when he won four of his six races including the Norfolk Stakes, Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. As a three-year-old he was beaten when tried over one mile in the 2000 Guineas but returned to Group One-winning form when dropped back to six furlongs in the Commonwealth Cup.

Background

Perfect Power is a bay horse with no white markings bred in Ireland by the County Westmeath-based Tally-Ho Stud, a breeding operation run by the O'Callaghan family. In October 2020 the yearling was consigned to the Tattersalls sale but failed to reach his reserve price of 16,000 guineas. [2] In April 2021 the colt was entered in the Goffs Breeze-Up sale, in which two-year-olds are publicly galloped before being auctioned, and was bought for £110,000 by Blandford Bloodstock. [3] He entered the ownership of Rashid Dalmook Al Maktoum, and was sent into training with Richard Fahey at Musley Bank in North Yorkshire.

He was from the first crop of foals sired by Ardad, a precocious sprinter who won the Windsor Castle Stakes and Flying Childers Stakes in 2016. [4] Perfect Power's dam Sagely showed some racing ability, winning two minor races from fifteen starts. [5] Her grand-dam Saga d'Ouilly was a full-sister to both Sagamix and the dam of Sagawara. [6]

Racing career

2021: two-year-old season

Perfect Power was ridden in his first four races by Paul Hanagan. The colt made his debut in a novice race (for horses with no more than two previous wins) over five furlongson the synthetic Tapeta at Newcastle Racecourse on 25 May when he started at odds of 5/2 and finished third behind Royal Aclaim and Robasta, beaten a length by the winner. [7] On 9 June the colt started 4/11 favourite for a maiden race on turf at Hamilton Park Racecourse and recorded his first success as he won "easily" by three and a half lengths after taking the lead inside the final furlong. [8] Eight days after his win at Hamilton, Perfect Power was stepped up in class to contest the Group 3 Norfolk Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot and started at odds of 14/1 in a fifteen-runner field. The runners divided in to two groups on either side of the straight course, with Perfect Power among those racing up the near side (the left hand side from the jockeys' viewpoint). He moved into contention entering the final furlong and took the lead in the final strides to prevail in a blanket finish, beating Go Bears Go by a head with Project Dante, Cadamosto, Lucci and Khunan finishing close behind. [9] After the race Fahey commented: "This has been a bit of a bogey race and we've been second at least three times. When they flashed past the post I thought we'd got beat. I was emotional for about two seconds so I must be getting soft in my old age... we haven't had him that long so Roger O'Callaghan [of the Tally-Ho Stud] has to take a bit of credit. We took him up on the grass and he destroyed some of my two-year-olds. We were a little bit unlucky first time but we were quietly confident he'd run a big race." [10]

On 29 July Perfect Power was moved up in class and distance for the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over six furlongs at Goodwood Racecourse and went off at odds of 7/1 in a seven-runner field. After being restrained by Hanagan in the early going the colt was repeatedly denied a clear run as he hung left in the closing stages and came home fifth behind the favourite Asymmetric, Khunan, Gubbass and Ebro River beaten just over a length by the winner. Christophe Soumillon took the ride when Perfect Power was sent to France to contest the Group 1 Prix Morny over 1200 metres at Deauville Racecourse on 22 August and started the 3.8/1 second favourite behind the Molecomb Stakes winner Armor. Asymmetric, Khunan and Gubbass were again in opposition while the other nine contenders included Quick Suzy (Queen Mary Stakes), Velocidad (Airlie Stud Stakes) and Have A Good Day (Prix de Cabourg). He raced towards the rear of the field before producing a strong late run, took the lead 60 metres from the finish and won by one and a half lengths from the Andre Fabre-trained Trident. [11] After the race Fahey said "He's a laid-back character, but I always thought he was pretty smart. I imagine he'd be a nice horse to ride at the races because you wouldn't feel that he was ever going to get flustered... He was very buzzy (when he came to us), but after about two and a half weeks he came back to earth... He soon learned the way we wanted to do it and he's been very simple since." [12]

Soumillon was again in the saddle when Perfect Power ended his campaign in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket Racecourse on 25 September. He started the 11/4 favourite against eight opponents including Go Bears Go, Asymmetric, Armor, Dr Zempf (second in the Phoenix Stakes), Castle Star (Marble Hill Stakes), Twilight Jet (Cornwallis Stakes) and Caturra (Flying Childers Stakes). After racing towards the rear for most of the way he was switched to the outside and began to make rapid progress in the last quarter mile. In a closely-contested finish he gained the advantage 100 yards from the finish and prevailed by half a length from Castle Star with Armor, Go Bears Go, Caturra and Twilight Jet close behind. [13] Fahey commented "This is a very special day with a very special horse given a very special ride. He's special and you could see that with the way he quickened. He's had a busy season but he loves it. He spends most of his time laying down asleep at home and saves his best for these days... we'll give him every chance to be a 2,000 Guineas horse next year." [14]

He was rated the best British two-year-old of 2006, when he was unbeaten in four races including the Norfolk Stakes, Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. In the following year he failed to win but finished second in the July Cup and Prix Maurice de Gheest and third in the 2000 Guineas. Since retiring to stud in 2008 he has had considerable success as a breeding stallion.

Ervedya French-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Ervedya is a French Thoroughbred racehorse best known for her performances over 1600 metres. She showed top-class form as a juvenile in 2014 when she won her first three races including the Prix de Cabourg before finishing third in the Prix Morny and second in the Prix Marcel Boussac. In the following year she won the Prix Imprudence and then recorded Group One wins in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches and the Coronation Stakes. Later that season she added another major victory when she took the Prix du Moulin. In 2016 she failed to win but ran prominently in several major races.

Bushranger is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He showed his best form as a two-year-old in 2008 when he won four of his seven races including the Anglesey Stakes in Ireland, the Prix Morny in France and the Middle Park Stakes in England as well as finishing second in the Phoenix Stakes. He was rated the second-best juvenile of the year in Europe. Bushranger failed to recapture his form in three starts as a three-year-old and was retired to stud at the end of 2009. He has had some success as a sire of winners.

The Last Lion (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

The Last Lion was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Racing only as a two-year-old in 2016, he was one of the most successful juveniles of his generation in Britain, winning the Brocklesby Stakes, Dragon Stakes and Sirenia Stakes before recording an upset victory in the Group One Middle Park Stakes. In all, he had four wins, four seconds and two third places from ten starts. At the end of the year he was sold and retired from racing to become a breeding stallion in Ireland. He returned to racing in 2021 after suffering from fertility issues, and was fatally injured while racing in March 2022.

Ribchester is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2015 he finished second in the Gimcrack Stakes on his second racecourse appearance and then won the Group Two Mill Reef Stakes. In 2016 he was rated the best British-trained colt of his generation and was one of the top milers in Europe, winning the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Prix Jacques Le Marois in France as well as being placed in the 2000 Guineas, Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. My Dream Boat Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

My Dream Boat is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset victory in the 2016 Prince of Wales's Stakes. As a two-year-old in 2014 he showed promise but failed to win in three races. In the following year he made steady progress, winning two handicap races before moving up in class in the autumn to win the Listed Prix du Ranelagh and the Group Three Prix Perth. He improved again when campaigned over longer distances as a four-year-old, taking the Gordon Richards Stakes in April and then defeating a world-class field in the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot in June.

Bethrah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2010. After finishing unplaced on her only run as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the following spring, winning a maiden race and the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial before taking the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was well beaten in her only subsequent race and was retired at the end of the year.

Zoffany was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best two-year-olds of 2010 in Ireland when he won five of his seven races including the Golden Fleece Stakes, Tyros Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. In the following year he failed to win a race but produced a career-best effort to run Frankel to three quarters of a length in the St James's Palace Stakes. He was retired from racing at the end of the year to become a breeding stallion and made a very promising start to his stud career. He died on 8 January 2021 at the age of 13 due to liver failure.

Arcano is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best European colts of his generation in 2009 when he was unbeaten in three races including the July Stakes and the Prix Morny. He failed to win in two races as a three-year-old and was retired at the end of his second season. He has stood at a breeding stallion in Ireland and Italy and has had some success as a breeding stallion.

Dick Turpin (horse, foaled 2007) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Dick Turpin is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. In three years of racing he won nine of his twenty races, showing consistent top-class form over distances of around one mile. As a two-year-old in 2009 he won the first four of his six races including the Richmond Stakes and the Tattersalls Ireland Sale Stakes. In the following year he won the Greenham Stakes and the Prix Jean Prat, finished second in the 2000 Guineas, Poule d'Essai des Poulains and St James's Palace Stakes and ran third in the Prix de la Forêt. As a four-year-old in 2011 he added victories in the Sandown Mile, Summer Mile Stakes and Premio Vittorio di Capua before being retired to stud at the end of the year.

Sands of Mali French-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Sands of Mali, is a French-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In a career which ran from July 2017 to July 2020 he ran eighteen times and won five of his races. In 2017 he was one of the best two-year-old colts in Europe, winning two races including the Gimcrack Stakes. In the following spring he established himself as a top class sprinter, taking the Prix Sigy and Sandy Lane Stakes before being narrowly defeated in the Commonwealth Cup. He ran poorly in late summer, but returned to form in autumn to record his biggest win in the British Champions Sprint Stakes. He failed to win in six races in 2019 and 2020 and was retired to stud in August 2020.

Donjuan Triumphant is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who excelled over sprint distances. He was rated one of the best two-year-olds in Europe when he won three of his eight races including the Rockingham Stakes and the Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte. He failed to win in the following year but ran second in both the Temple Stakes and the Prix Maurice de Gheest. After changing stables as a four-year-old he won the 32Red Gold Cup in 2017 and the Wentworth Stakes in 2018. In 2019 he was beaten in his first six starts but recorded his biggest win on his final racecourse appearance when he took the British Champions Sprint Stakes.

Wootton Bassett is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He was one of the best two-year-old in Europe in 2010 when he was undefeated in five race including the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. He failed to win in 2011 and was retired from racing at the end of the year. He has had considerable success as a sire of winners.

Hurricane Lane (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Hurricane Lane is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After winning his only race as a two-year-old in 2020 he made steady improvement in the following year, winning the Dante Stakes and finishing third in the Epsom Derby before winning the Irish Derby, the Grand Prix de Paris and the St Leger Stakes.

Broome is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse. He showed very good form as a juvenile in 2018 when he won one minor race and ran second in both the Champions Juvenile Stakes and the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. He improved in the following year to win the Ballysax Stakes and the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial before finishing a close fourth in the Epsom Derby. After running poorly in two races in 2020 he returned to form as a five-year-old to win the Devoy Stakes, Alleged Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

Ebro River (horse) Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Ebro River is an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the most successful juveniles in Europe in the summer of 2021 when he won three races including the National Stakes in England and the Phoenix Stakes in Ireland.

Alenquer is a French-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. After showing promise as a juvenile in 2020 he emerged as a top-class middle-distance performer in the following year, winning the Sandown Classic Trial and King Edward VII Stakes as well as finishing second in the International Stakes and Grand Prix de Paris. As a four-year-old he added victories in the Winter Derby and Tattersalls Gold Cup.
