Pericles Lewis (born September 13,1968) is the Douglas Tracy Smith Professor of comparative literature at Yale University [1] and the Dean of Yale College. [2] [3]
Previously at Yale,he was the founding president of Yale-NUS College,a liberal arts college in Singapore that is jointly governed by Yale and the National University of Singapore, [4] [5] as well as vice president for global strategy and vice provost for academic initiatives. [6] [7]
Lewis was born in Canada on September 13,1968. [8] He is the grandson of Canadian Member of Parliament Andrew Brewin. He attended high school at the University of Toronto Schools and received his bachelor's degree in English literature from McGill University in 1990. He received the degree of A.M. in comparative literature in 1991 and his Ph.D,also in comparative literature,in 1997 from Stanford University,where his dissertation supervisor was Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht. [4] [9] He travelled extensively in Asia as a young man. [10]
He is married to Sheila N. Hayre,clinical professor of law at Quinnipiac University.
Lewis was appointed assistant professor at Yale in the departments of English and comparative literature in 1998,promoted to associate professor there in 2002,and full professor in 2007. [11] He was director of undergraduate studies for the Yale literature major from 2000 to 2006,and director of graduate studies of Yale's Comparative Literature Department from 2006 to 2010. He was the recipient of the McGill Graduates' Society Award for Student Service (1990),a Whiting Fellowship (1997),the Heyman Prize (2000),a Morse Fellowship (2001),and the Yale Graduate Mentor Award (2004). As a scholar,he is best known for his books Modernism,Nationalism,and the Novel,The Cambridge Introduction to Modernism and Religious Experience and the Modernist Novel. [4] He is also an editor of the third,fourth,and fifth editions of the widely used Norton Anthology of World Literature (2012;2018;2024) [12]
He was the project director of the Yale Modernism Lab,a website for "collaborative research into the roots of literary modernism". [13] [14] He also serves on the editorial board of Modernism/Modernity.
As Yale's vice president for global strategy from 2017 to 2022,he was involved in planning the launches of the Yale Jackson School for Global Affairs,the Yale Institute for Global Health and the Yale Schwarzman Center. [15]
He became the dean of Yale College on July 1,2022. [16] As Dean,he revised Yale's policies on student leaves of absence for mental health, [17] recruited a number of heads and deans for Yale's residential colleges, [18] and opened an Office of Educational Opportunity. [19] He argued in favor of affirmative action and took steps to maintain diversity at Yale after the Supreme Court ruled against affirmative action. [20] In his first-year address in 2022,he spoke about Conversation. [21] His second first-year address,in 2023,focused on Community. [22] [23] He launched the dean’s dialogue series to encourage civil discourse on difficult topics,including national politics and the conflict in the Middle East. [24]
He was appointed President of Yale-NUS,a liberal arts college affiliated with both Yale and the National University of Singapore,by a joint search committee;the appointment was announced on May 30,2012,effective July 1,2012. [4] [25] Before appointment,Lewis was a key planner of the new college's curriculum,and supervised the hiring of core faculty. [4] The College's first students matriculated on July 2,2013,and graduated on May 29,2017. [26] As President,Lewis advocated the concept of residential liberal arts education as "building a community of learning." [27]

The National University of Singapore Faculty of Law is Singapore's oldest law school. NUS Law was initially established in 1956 as the Department of Law in the University of Malaya, and subsequently, University of Singapore. Peter Salovey is an American social psychologist and academic administrator. He served as the 23rd president of Yale University from 2013 to 2024. He previously served as provost of Yale University from 2008 to 2013, dean of Yale College from 2004 to 2008, and dean of Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 2003 to 2004. Gavin Dennis Flood is a British scholar of comparative religion specialising in Shaivism and phenomenology, but with research interests that span South Asian traditions. From October 2005 through December 2015, he served in the Faculty of Theology University of Oxford and as the Academic Director of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies which is a Recognised Independent Centre of the University of Oxford. In 2008, Flood was granted the title of professor of Hindu studies and comparative religion from the University of Oxford. In 2014, he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy. In 2016, Flood became the inaugural Yap Kim Hao Professor of Comparative Religious Studies at Yale-NUS College in Singapore. He is a senior research fellow at Campion Hall, University of Oxford.
Tan Eng Chye is a Singaporean mathematician and university administrator who has been serving as the third president of the National University of Singapore since 2018. Prior to his presidency, he served as the deputy president of academic affairs and provost at the National University of Singapore.
Lai Choy Heng is Emeritus Professor of Physics, NUS Emeritus Executive Vice-President and President Advisor, and the former Executive Vice-president, Yale-NUS College (2012–2014) and Vice Provost at the National University of Singapore (2003–2012). He received his undergraduate as well as graduate degrees from the University of Chicago. He took up a position as post-doctoral Research Fellow at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen from 1978 to 1980 after which he joined National University of Singapore’s (NUS) Department of Mathematics as a Lecturer. He then moved to the Department of Physics in 1981 which saw him rise through the ranks from senior lecturer to associate professor to professor.
Alberto Acereda is a prominent figure in the field of global higher education, particularly known for his early academic research in Modern Spanish and Latin American literatures, as well as for his work in various corporate leadership roles contributing significantly to the development and implementation of assessments and educational technology used globally. Acereda currently serves as Senior Vice President for Higher Education at Territorium, Inc., a start-up company focused on connecting learners to careers using verified skills and offering digital solutions to measure skills, showcase talent, and lead learners and workers towards the future. At Educational Testing Service (ETS), the world's largest private educational testing and assessment organization, he was an Associate Vice President for Global Higher education where he was responsible for leading and overseeing tertiary education initiatives, including the development and administration of standardized assessments and other related programs. Acereda has been a strong advocate for the global expansion of higher education opportunities. His work at for-profit and non-profit organizations has involved engaging with educational institutions around the world to promote standardized assessments and digital solutions that support academic and professional mobility. He has also emphasized the importance of culturally sensitive assessments that are valid and reliable across different educational systems and cultural contexts. Prior to joining ETS in 2012, he spent nearly twenty years at various universities and graduate programs across the United States.
Simon Chesterman is an Australian legal academic and writer who is currently a vice provost at the National University of Singapore and dean of the NUS College. He was the dean of NUS Faculty of Law from 2012 to 2022. He is also senior director of AI governance at AI Singapore, editor of the Asian Journal of International Law and co-president of the Law Schools Global League.
Tan Tai Yong is a Singaporean academic who is the current President of Singapore University of Social Sciences. He served as the President of Yale-NUS College from 2017 to 2022. He is also Chairman of the Management Board of the Institute of South Asian Studies, an autonomous university-level research institute in NUS. He was a former Nominated Member of Parliament and served from 2014 to 2015.
