Pertex is a brand of lightweight, synthetic fabrics typically used in outdoor and sports apparel. Originally established by Perseverance Mills Ltd. of Padiham, England, the brand is now owned by Mitsui & Co. of Japan. [1]
The brand was established in 1979 by Perseverance Mills Ltd., primarily an industrial textile manufacturer specialising in ribbons for dot matrix printers along with parachute canopy fabrics and other products. [2] The mill was approached by Hamish Hamilton, a climber and mountaineer, with a concept for a new fabric. Hamish's original idea for Pertex was a high-density fabric, woven from multifilament synthetic yarns, with the goal of providing a wind-resistant, shell fabric capable of transporting moisture through capillary action. The first products to use Pertex fabrics were the pile-lined sleeping bags made by Buffalo Systems Ltd. in Sheffield. [3]
Subsequently, using the heat calendering expertise developed as parachute canopy fabric manufacturers, Perseverance Mills Ltd. began to produce downproof Pertex fabrics for down jackets and sleeping bags. The process of heat calendering reduces the interstices between the yarns of the fabric, resulting in fabrics with low air permeability and high resistance to down and fibre migration.
In 2005, Perseverance Mills Ltd. went into liquidation and the Pertex trademarks were acquired by Mitsui & Co.. [4] [5] [6]

Gore-Tex is W. L. Gore & Associates's trade name for waterproof, breathable fabric membrane. It was invented in 1969. Gore-Tex blocks liquid water while allowing water vapor to pass through and is designed to be a lightweight, waterproof fabric for all-weather use. It is composed of expanded PTFE (ePTFE), a stretched out form of the PFAS compound polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE).
A raincoat is a waterproof or water-resistant garment worn on the upper body to shield the wearer from rain. Early Winters, Ltd. of Seattle, Washington, United States was founded in 1972 by William S. Nicolai, who formed the company after creating a tent called the Omnipotent. Early Winters was the first company to create and sell a consumer product made with Gore-Tex laminates produced by W. L. Gore & Associates in Elkton, Maryland. The first product made with Gore-Tex fabric debuted in 1976 and was a streamlined, two-person tent called The Light Dimension. The tent was created by Nicolai and William H. Edwards and was marketed by Ron Zimmerman.

In textile manufacturing, finishing refers to the processes that convert the woven or knitted cloth into a usable material and more specifically to any process performed after dyeing the yarn or fabric to improve the look, performance, or "hand" (feel) of the finish textile or clothing. The precise meaning depends on context.
Waxed cotton is cotton impregnated with a paraffin or natural beeswax based wax, woven into or applied to the cloth. Popular from the 1920s to the mid-1950s, the product, which developed from the sailing industry in England and Scotland, became commonly used for waterproofing. It has been replaced by more modern materials but is still used by the country sports community. There are two main drawbacks: waxed fabric is not very breathable, and it tends to be heavier and bulkier than modern synthetic waterproof materials.

When the products are immersed in water, the water acts as a relaxing medium, and all stresses and strains are relaxed and the fabric tries to come back to its original state.
Hydroentanglement is a bonding process for wet or dry fibrous webs made by either carding, airlaying or wet-laying, the resulting bonded fabric being a nonwoven. It uses fine, high pressure jets of water which penetrate the web, hit the conveyor belt and bounce back causing the fibres to entangle.
Bananatex is a natural cellulosic biodegradable "technical" canvas fabric made of Abacá banana plant fibres. The plants are grown in the Philippines as part of a sustainable forestry project in Catanduanes. Bananatex was developed and is distributed by the Swiss canvas goods company QWSTION and is used in the company's own products as well as in other companies' manufactured goods. Bananatex was developed to have better wear characteristics than cotton while being more sustainable. It is less durable than synthetics like Cordura, and can biodegrade. Bananatex is sold in a range of colours and is available with or without a natural beeswax waterproof coating.
