Peter Edwards Carmichael Jr. (born October 6, 1971) is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). He was named offensive coordinator on January 12, 2009, replacing Doug Marrone, who left to become the head coach of the Syracuse Orange. [1] New Orleans led the league in scoring in 2008 and 2009.

Coaching

College

Carmichael began his coaching career as the assistant offensive line coach at the University of New Hampshire in 1994, with the Wildcats winning the Yankee Conference championship. Followed by being the quarterbacks coach at Louisiana Tech from 1995–1999. [2]

Early NFL years

Carmichael's first NFL job was in 2000 when he was the tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns. The following year Carmichael became the quality control coach for the Washington Redskins. He would hold the same position with the San Diego Chargers in 2002 [3] until he was promoted in 2004 to the team's assistant wide receivers coach. [2]

New Orleans Saints

Carmichael has worked closely with Drew Brees since both arrived in New Orleans from San Diego in 2006 [4] when he became the team's quarterbacks coach. In 2008, Carmichael added on the title of pass game coordinator. [2] He was named offensive coordinator on January 12, 2009, replacing Doug Marrone, who left to become the head coach of the Syracuse Orange. [5] [4]

Throughout his time with the Saints, he has been an important figure in the planning and preparation of the team's offensive attack that ranked first in the league in yardage in his first six seasons and in the top nine every year during his tenure as offensive coordinator. During this period, the club's streak of finishing in the top 10 in offense is the third-longest since the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

Personal life

Carmichael grew up in Medway, Massachusetts playing for the Mustangs[ citation needed ] and attended Boston College. [6] Growing up in a football family, his late father, Pete Carmichael Sr., was a football coach [3] with more than 40 years of coaching experience at the high school, college and NFL levels, including 18 years at Boston College and nine years with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Daniel Ernest Henning, is a former American football player and coach. A quarterback, he played college football at the College of William & Mary and professional football in 1966 for the San Diego Chargers of the American Football League (AFL). Henning served as a head coach in the National Football League (NFL) for the Atlanta Falcons (1983–1986) and the Chargers (1989–1991). He was the head football coach at Boston College from 1994 to 1996. Henning then returned to the NFL as an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills in 1997. After Hall of Fame coach Marv Levy retired, reportedly partially due to his reluctance to fire Henning, Henning left Buffalo.

Chris Palmer is an American former football coach and college athletics administrator. Palmer served as the head coach for Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL) from 1999 to 2000 and in the same capacity with the Hartford Colonials of the United Football League (UFL) in 2010. He was the head football coach at the University of New Haven from 1986 to 1987 and at Boston University from 1988 to 1989. Palmer has also served as an assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, New England Patriots, New York Giants, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans and the Buffalo Bills of the NFL. He later returned to the University of New Haven and served as the athletic director from 2018 to 2019.

Nathaniel Hackett is an American football coach who is the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). A former long-time assistant to Doug Marrone, Hackett previously served as the offensive coordinator for the NFL's Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, as well as several positions for the Syracuse Orange in college football from 2010 to 2012. He served as the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2022, but was fired during the season after a 4–11 record.

Anthero "Nick" Nicolau was a longtime NFL and college football assistant coach. He graduated from Southern Connecticut State University.

The 2013 Syracuse Orange football team represented Syracuse University in the 2013 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Orange were led by first year head coach Scott Shafer and played their home games at the Carrier Dome. The season marked their first as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, after their final season in the Big East Conference in 2012. They finished the season 7–6, 4–4 in ACC play to finish in a tie for third place in the Atlantic Division. They were invited to the Texas Bowl where they defeated Minnesota.
