Henry County is a county located in the western portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,272. Its county seat is Clinton. The county was organized December 13, 1834 as Rives County but was renamed in 1841 for Revolutionary War patriot Patrick Henry. The county originally had been named after William Cabell Rives, who was then serving as a U.S. Senator from Virginia. However, Rives lost popularity in Missouri after he joined the Whig Party.

In the South are the Ozarks, a forested highland, providing timber, minerals and recreation. The Missouri River, after which the state is named, flows through the center of the state into the Mississippi River, which makes up Missouri's eastern border.

History

Variant names were "Carrsville" and "Petersburgh". [1] Petersburg was originally called Carrsville, and under the latter name was founded in the 1870s, taking its name from Carrsville Mill. [2] A post office called Carrsville was established in 1872, the name was changed to Petersburgh in 1881, and the post office closed in 1902. [3] The present name honors Peter Lane, a local merchant. [2]
