Philip Kipchirchir Murgor is a Kenyan lawyer.
Philip Murgor was born on the 4th of July 1961 at Iten District Hospital to Christine Chebor, a nurse, in Elgeyo-Marakwet District (now Elgeyo-Marakwet County), Kenya. His father, Charles Murgor, was employed by colonial administration as a District Officer. [1]
Murgor spent his formative school years in Kiambu town, Central Province and Kisumu town, Nyanza Province. His father Charles retired as a Provincial Commissioner in 1969 and the family moved to Eldoret in present-day Uasin Gishu County.
In 1981, he joined the University of Nairobi for his undergraduate Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree. Upon graduation in 1985, he joined the Kenya School of Law for his post graduate Diploma in Law while undertaking his pupillage at Hamilton Harrison and Matthews.
During the abortive coup d'état by the Kenya Air Force in 1982, [2] Murgor and a couple of his classmates were arrested and charged with being sympathetic to the coup and demonstrating with seditious intentions. Murgor and his classmates were incarcerated to await trial under the authority of the then Attorney General of Kenya Joseph Kamere. He spent several months imprisoned before the incoming Attorney-General Matthew Guy-Muli who served as the Attorney General of Kenya between 1983 and 1991 dropped all charges against Philip and his classmates due to lack of evidence.
Murgor went on to finalize his Bachelor of Laws with honors and thereafter, his post graduate diploma program at the Kenya School of Law. While at the School of Law in 1986, he was selected, among seven others, to participate in an American student exchange program. During this period he had the opportunity to intern at the Superior Court of the United States in Washington DC. [3]
In 2008, he returned to his alma mater University of Nairobi for his Master of Laws (LLM) in International Trade and Investments Law for which he graduated with honors in 2011.
As a law student, Murgor interned at Mereka & Company which specialized in insurance law. Thereafter, he joined Hamilton Harrison and Matthews, [4] one of the oldest law firms with a strong commercial civil litigation practice. After completing his studies, in 1986 he took a position as State Counsel in the Public Prosecutions Department, where he was posted to the Kisumu Provincial State Counsel Office. As a criminal prosecutor, he was responsible for advising and directing the criminal investigators on the adequacy or direction of their investigations to ensure successful prosecutions.

In 1992 Murgor resigned from the civil service and joined his wife in private practice at Murgor and Murgor Advocates. [6] He was appointed to the legal team that defended President Daniel arap Moi in election petitions filed after the first multiparty general elections in 1992. [7] [8]
In 1995, he was appointed by the Central Bank of Kenya to unravel the Goldenberg scandal and recover the billions lost in the scam. His successful handling of the scandal cases on behalf of the Central Bank of Kenya against Kamlesh Pattni and his associates led to direct threats to his life, which forced him to go public on the same. Thereafter, he was denied his legal fees in an attempt to force him to compromise the cases. He was eventually forced to quit the cases in 1998, rather than succumb to the threats. [9] [10] [11]
When Mwai Kibaki became President in 2003 on an anti-corruption platform, the president immediately re-appointed him to the Goldenberg scandal cases, [12] and a month later he was appointed as the Public Prosecutor, [13] a post he reluctantly accepted on condition that he would be granted a free hand in reforming the failed public prosecution services, and prosecution perpetrators of grand corruption. By 2004, the Kibaki government had fallen back on its anti-corruption pledges, and many of officials had slipped into corruption the most significant of which was the Anglo-Leasing Scandal and trafficking of cocaine. [14]
Murgor faced resistance in relation to the prosecution of Anglo-Leasing Scandal and a thorough investigation into a case involving the trafficking of 1.2 tonnes of cocaine worth KShs 6.4 billion. The cases were thwarted by Presidential insiders. [15] The correlation between the prosecution and threats to his person was heightened when his home was attacked. He was terminated as Public Prosecutor in May 2005.
Murgor returned to private practice as a Litigation Partner at Murgor and Murgor Advocates. [16] In 2007, he took over as the Managing Partner at the Firm when his wife was appointed as Group Counsel and company secretary for East African Breweries Limited (EABL). In 2008, he represented the Central Bank of Kenya in the Grand Regency Scandal on the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel. In 2011, he became the 10th Kenyan Lawyer and the 568th in the world to be admitted as a legal practitioner at the International Criminal Court. [17]
Murgor has since handled several landmark cases touching on the enforcement of fundamental rights under the new constitution relating to gender rights. Recently, he sued the directors and shareholders of Imperial Bank Limited on behalf of the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation to recover KShs.45 Billion of customer deposits lost due their negligence and breach of fiduciary duties. [18]
Murgor supports civil society initiatives and forums that are concerned about the growing ethnic tensions and runaway corruption, both of which threaten the very existence of Kenya. He is an advocate for the rights of the disadvantaged members of society. He holds memberships in various prestigious legal and civil society groups.
In 2014, Murgor was appointed as the Chairman of Wildlife Direct Kenya (WLD). [19] He was part of the team that initiated the Hands Off Our Elephants Campaign to help save our endangered animals from poachers. [20] [21] In April 2016, in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service and the Government of Kenya, he helped make history by participating in the destruction of 105 tonnes of ivory [22]
Murgor met his wife, Justice Agnes K. Murgor, in 1986 during their time in the exchange program in Washington, D.C. They were married in 1990 and have three children. They own a 650-acre dairy project . [23] [24]

The Goldenberg scandal was a political scandal where the Kenyan government was found to have subsidised exports of gold far beyond standard arrangements during the 1990s, by paying the company Goldenberg International 35% more than their foreign currency earnings. Although it notionally appears that the scheme was intended to earn hard currency for the country, it is estimated to have cost Kenya the equivalent of more than 10% of the country's annual gross domestic product, and it is possible that no or minimal amounts of gold were actually exported. The scandal appears to have involved political corruption at the highest levels of the government of Daniel Arap Moi. Officials in the former government of Mwai Kibaki have also been implicated.

William Kipchirchir Samoei Arap Ruto is a Kenyan politician who is the 11th and current deputy president of Kenya as well as the president-elect of the country. He previously served in several cabinet positions such as the Minister for Home Affairs from August to December 2002, the Minister of Agriculture from 2008 to 2010 and as Minister for Higher Education from April to October 2010.
John Githongo is a former Kenyan journalist who investigated bribery and fraud in his home country (Kenya) and later, under the presidency of Mwai Kibaki, took on an official governmental position to fight corruption. In 2005 he left that position, later accusing top ministers of large-scale fraud. In the anglo-leasing corruption which he blew the lid over, fraudulent deliveries of government military and forensic laboratory equipment were allegedly ordered, "delivered" and the payment completed in the current president- Uhuru Kenyatta's tenure. Corruption in the government of Kenya has a history which spans the era of the founding president Jomo Kenyatta, to Daniel arap Moi's KANU, Mwai Kibaki's PNU government and the current Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee Party government. In the Corruption Perceptions Index 2021 Kenya is ranked 128th out of 180 countries for corruption, tied with seven other countries, including Bolivia, Azerbaijan, Laos, and Paraguay.
Michael John Garcia is an American lawyer, judge and former Republican government official. Since February 2016, he has served as an Associate Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, that state's highest court. He is a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York (2005–2008). Between his service as United States Attorney and his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Garcia was a partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis. He has also served as chairman of El Museo del Barrio.
Erupting in June 2008, the Grand Regency Scandal concerns the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel in Downtown Nairobi, Kenya, from the Central Bank of Kenya to an unspecified group of Libyan investors called "Libya Arab African Investment Company". The sale was directed by Finance Minister Amos Kimunya, leading to passage of near-unanimous censure of Kimunya by the Kenyan Parliament on 1 July 2008. On 8 July 2008 Kimunya submitted his resignation, and called for an investigation to clear his name.

Mbuvi Gideon Kioko, commonly known as Mike Sonko or simply Sonko, is a Kenyan politician. He served as the second Governor of Nairobi. He was removed from the office of the governor by a form of impeachement by the Senate of the Republic of Kenya on Abuse of Office, Gross Misconduct and Crimes under National Law on 17 December 2020. He becomes the second governor in Kenya to be impeached after Kiambu's Ferdinand Waititu.
Dr. Nancy Makokha Baraza is a former Kenyan judge. She was the first Deputy Chief Justice of Kenya and a member of Kenya's first supreme court after the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution. She served in the court from June 2011 to her suspension in January 2012 and subsequently resigned on 18 October 2012. She was appointed to the Kenya Law Reform Commission in 2008 for a term of three years, serving as a vice chairperson until her appointment as deputy CJ. In early 2010, she was elected chairperson of the Media Council of Kenya’s Ethics and Complaints Commission.
Philip Kiptoo Tunoi is a Kenyan lawyer and a retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya. He also served as a Judge of the East African Court of Justice.

He also is the former senator of Murang'a County, and the former Senate of Kenya Majority Chief Whip, former member of parliament for Kiharu Constituency and a former Councillor for Central Ward in Murang'a town. He is a law graduate from the University of Nairobi and a principal in the firm Irungu Kangata & Co. Advocates located at Flamingo Towers 4th floor, Upperhill, Nairobi. He holds PhD (Law) University of Nairobi and teaches law at Catholic University of Eastern Africa, Nairobi.
The National Youth Service Scandal was a corruption scandal within Kenya's Ministry of Devolution and Planning. Ksh. 791 million ($7,650,000) is said to have been stolen from the ministry's coffers, with some saying that figure could have been as high as Ksh. 1.8 billion ($17,400,000).

George Mong'are Kegoro is a Kenyan lawyer and the current executive director of the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa (OSIEA), an arm of the Open Society Foundations (OSF). Prior to that he was the director of the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
