Phoma wilt

Phoma wilt is a disease of the common hop plant caused by several species of fungal plant pathogens in the genus Phoma . These include Phoma herbarum and Phoma exigua , and possibly other as yet unidentified species. Phoma infection may cause decreased yields, but Phoma wilt is not considered to be a very common or destructive disease of the hop plant.

Hosts and symptoms

Phoma herbarum and P. exigua have both been found to have wide host specificity, although the hop plant appears to be the only common host of the two. [1] [2] [3] There have not been any indications found of cultivar specificity, although hop yards established for a longer time may have a higher risk of Phoma infection [4] .  Symptoms of infection typically begin with small chlorotic leaf spots and develop into greyish brown lesions that have a distinct target or concentric ring appearance. [3] [4] In some instances, the lesions may also be greyish white in color. Infection of the hop cones will produce brown or red discoloration covering some or all of the bracts of the hop cone. [1] [2] [3] [4] This discoloration is an indication of necrosis on the cones. [2] [3] The plant may also develop cankers or wilt, but this is not seen in all cases. [2] [3] Phoma wilt of hops may be diagnosed by its characteristic symptoms or by isolation and DNA sequencing of the pathogen against known genomes. [3]

Interestingly, P. herbarum and P. exigua have also both been considered as bioherbicide agents against some species of broadleaf weeds. [2]

Disease cycle

Phoma wilt in hops has been found to be spread by pycnidiospores. These asexual spores are released from mature pycnidia in a matrix which may appear white or pink. [1] [5] Dissemination occurs largely by rain splash, wind, or misting, but spores may also be carried by bird or insect vectors from plant to plant. [2] [6] Infection, which typically becomes evident in late Summer, may occur by spores entering through stomata or wounds in the plant but may also enter directly through the epidermis. [1] [7] Spores will then bud and divide, and hyphae will branch out. [5] The initial infection is symptom-less as the pathogen spreads. However, once the pathogen becomes necrotrophic, necrotic lesions will appear. [5] Pycnidia formation begins with hyphae near the epidermis in lesions forming a cavity followed by the production of dark hyphal cells. The aggregation will continue to grow in size until it is mature. Spore production starts from the inner cells of the pycnidia, and stalks of spores project inward in columns from those cells. [5] Spores are oblong and generally measure approximately 5.0 x 2.5 μm. [3] [5] There is no sexual stage for either P. herbarum or P. exigua that has been identified, but many other species of Phoma have been found with a Didymalla teleomorph. [6]

In the absence of a host, P. herbarum and P. exigua can act saprophytically survive in plant debris or decaying material. [1] [2]

Environment

Phoma wilt of hops generally requires rain for dissemination by rain splash, but there is some evidence that it may thrive from periods of dryness with interspersed, shorter periods of wetness. [2] Repeatedly growing hops in the same area where Phoma wilt occurred previously increases disease incidence rate, as the pathogen is able to survive in debris and material on the ground. There is also evidence that birds and insects which frequent the hop plant may act as transient vectors of the disease. [2] [6]

Management

There are currently no specific management techniques described for Phoma Wilt in Hops. [4] However, several methods have been proposed. The simplest cultural method is the removal of plant debris from hop yards which may help reduce the spread of the disease as well as initial infection in new stock. [2] [8] This functions by effectively removing any resting spores, pycnidia, or saprophytic pathogen. Any diseased plants or plant material should also be removed. Because the disease prefers moist condition for dissemination, it may also be helpful to ensure hop plants have adequate airflow. [6] [8] This likely, not an issue though due to the way hop vines are guided upward on wires. It is also important to water the hop plants from the ground as opposed to misting or sprinkler type systems which will create or prolong a moist environment where the pathogen can thrive. Because the pathogen is also able to survive in the soil, growing a non-host plant in the area for 4+ years could be used to halt future infection; however, the longevity of the hop plant rhizome may reduce the efficiency of this cultural practice. Sterile practice should also be used when pruning, transporting, or propagating stock to impede the spread of the pathogen. There are fungicides available that have an action against the Phoma species seen in hops, but none specifically registered for Phoma wilt in hops, though chemical treatments have been proposed for the treatment of the disease. These include tebuconazole, trifloxystrobin, fosetyl-Al, and copper hydroxide for their action against fungi in general. [8] Tebuconazole is a systemic fungicide which interferes with membrane functions and pathogen survival within the hop plant. [9] The fungicide trifloxystrobin acts by interfering with some aspects of fungal pathogen respiration, resulting in the inhibition of both growth and spore germination. [10] This functionally stops the initial infection or subsequent growth. Fosetyl-Al has a less distinct mode of action, likely having fungicidal properties by stimulating defense mechanisms in the host plant itself [11] .  Fosetyl-Al may therefore help decrease the spread of the Phoma infection in hop plant tissues, but this has yet to be studied more closely. Copper hydroxide is a widely used foliar applied fungicide which denatures proteins on the plant surface and inhibits pathogen forced entry. [12] This may not be completely effective against Phoma, as it is also able to enter through wounds and natural openings.

It can cause complete crop loss in warm, humid climates, but is virtually unknown in regions with arid summers.” The name comes from the black fringe that borders growing brown patches on the leaves. The disease also attacks other parts of the plant, “all green parts of the vine: the shoots, leaf and fruit stems, tendrils, and fruit. The most damaging effect is to the fruit”.

Leptosphaeria coniothyrium is a plant pathogen. It can be found around the world.

Ascochyta tarda or Phoma tarda is a fungal plant pathogen that causes dieback and leafspot on coffee and was first observed in Ethiopia in 1954. It poses a potentially serious threat to coffee crops, but climate change may reduce the prevalence of environmental conditions favorable to its spread.

<i>Zymoseptoria tritici</i> Species of fungus

Zymoseptoria tritici, synonyms Septoria tritici, Mycosphaerella graminicola, is a species of filamentous fungus, an ascomycete in the family Mycosphaerellaceae. It is a wheat plant pathogen causing septoria leaf blotch that is difficult to control due to resistance to multiple fungicides. The pathogen today causes one of the most important diseases of wheat.

Verticillium dahliae is a fungal plant pathogen. It causes verticillium wilt in many plant species, causing leaves to curl and discolor. It may cause death in some plants. Over 400 plant species are affected by Verticillium complex.

Diaporthe helianthi is a fungal pathogen that causes Phomopsis stem canker of sunflowers. In sunflowers, Phomopsis helianthi is the causative agent behind stem canker. Its primary symptom is the production of large canker lesions on the stems of sunflower plants. These lesions can eventually lead to lodging and plant death. This disease has been shown to be particularly devastating in southern and eastern regions of Europe, although it can also be found in the United States and Australia. While cultural control practices are the primary method of controlling for Stem Canker, there have been a few resistant cultivars developed in regions of Europe where the disease is most severe.

<i>Ascochyta</i> Genus of fungi

Ascochyta is a genus of ascomycete fungi, containing several species that are pathogenic to plants, particularly cereal crops. The taxonomy of this genus is still incomplete. The genus was first described in 1830 by Marie-Anne Libert, who regarded the spores as minute asci and the cell contents as spherical spores. Numerous revisions to the members of the genus and its description were made for the next several years. Species that are plant pathogenic on cereals include, A. hordei, A. graminea, A. sorghi, A. tritici. Symptoms are usually elliptical spots that are initially chlorotic and later become a necrotic brown. Management includes fungicide applications and sanitation of diseased plant tissue debris.

Cercospora arachidicola is a fungal ascomycete plant pathogen that causes early leaf spot of peanut. Peanuts originated in South America and are cultivated globally in warm, temperate and tropical regions.

<i>Ascochyta pisi</i> Species of fungus

Ascochyta pisi is a fungal plant pathogen that causes ascochyta blight on pea, causing lesions of stems, leaves, and pods. These same symptoms can also be caused by Ascochyta pinodes, and the two fungi are not easily distinguishable.

<i>Didymella bryoniae</i> Species of fungus

<i>Septoria malagutii</i> Species of fungus

Septoria malagutii is a fungal plant pathogen infecting potatoes. The casual fungal pathogen is a deuteromycete and therefore has no true sexual stage. As a result, Septoria produces pycnidia, an asexual flask shaped fruiting body, on the leaves of potato and other tuber-bearing spp. causing small black to brown necrotic lesions ranging in size from 1-5mm. The necrotic lesions can fuse together forming large necrotic areas susceptible to leaf drop, early senescence, dieback, and dwarfing. Septoria malagutii has been found only in the Andean countries of Bolivia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela at altitudes of near 3000 meters. Consequently, the fungi grows and disperses best under relatively low temperatures with high humidities, with optimal growth occurring at 20 °C (68 °F). The disease has caused devastation on potato yields in South America and in areas where this disease is common, potato yields have been seen to drop by 60%.

<i>Phoma</i> Genus of fungi

Phoma is a genus of common coelomycetous soil fungi. It contains many plant pathogenic species.

Calophoma clematidina is a fungal plant pathogen and the most common cause of the disease clematis wilt affecting large-flowered varieties of Clematis. Symptoms of infection include leaf spotting, wilting of leaves, stems or the whole plant and internal blackening of the stem, often at soil level. Infected plants growing in containers may also develop root rot.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Raspberry spur blight</span> Species of fungus

Raspberry spur blight is caused by the fungus Didymella applanata. This plant pathogen is more problematic on red raspberries (Rubus idaeus) than on black or purple raspberries. The fungus infects the leaves first and then spreads to the cane. It causes necrotic spots on the cane near the base of the petiole attachment. Raspberry spur blight can cause a significant reduction in yield, fruit blight, premature leaf drop, and weak bud and cane growth. The magnitude of damage is not clearly understood in the United States, however, studies from Scotland suggest damage to the cane itself is limited. The disease has minor economic impacts by reducing leaves in the summer or killing buds. Major economic damage occurs if the disease manages to kill the entire cane. In the United States, this disease is found in Oregon and Washington.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ascochyta diseases of pea</span>

Ascochyta blights occur throughout the world and can be of significant economic importance. Three fungi contribute to the ascochyta blight disease complex of pea. Ascochyta pinodes causes Mycosphaerella blight. Ascochyta pinodella causes Ascochyta foot rot, and Ascochyta pisi causes Ascochyta blight and pod spot. Of the three fungi, Ascochyta pinodes is of the most importance. These diseases are conducive under wet and humid conditions and can cause a yield loss of up to fifty percent if left uncontrolled. The best method to control ascochyta blights of pea is to reduce the amount of primary inoculum through sanitation, crop-rotation, and altering the sowing date. Other methods—chemical control, biological control, and development of resistant varieties—may also be used to effectively control ascochyta diseases.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Phomopsis blight of juniper</span> Species of fungus

Phomopsisblight of juniper is a foliar disease discovered in 1917 caused by the fungal pathogen Phomopsis juniperovora. The fungus infects new growth of juniper trees or shrubs, i.e. the seedlings or young shoots of mature trees. Infection begins with the germination of asexual conidia, borne from pycnidia, on susceptible tissue, the mycelia gradually move inwards down the branch, and into the main stem. Management strategies mainly include removing and destroying diseased tissue and limiting the presence of moisture on plants. Junipers become resistant to infection as they mature and the young yellow shoots turn dark green. Preventive strategies include planting only resistant varieties and spraying new growth with fungicide until plants have matured.

Gummy stem blight is a cucurbit-rot disease caused by the fungal plant pathogen Didymella bryoniae. Gummy stem blight can affect a host at any stage of growth in its development and affects all parts of the host including leaves, stems and fruits. Symptoms generally consist of circular dark tan lesions that blight the leaf, water soaked leaves, stem cankers, and gummy brown ooze that exudes from cankers, giving it the name gummy stem blight. Gummy stem blight reduces yields of edible cucurbits by devastating the vines and leaves and rotting the fruits. There are various methods to control gummy stem blight, including use of treated seed, crop rotation, using preventative fungicides, eradication of diseased material, and deep plowing previous debris.
