Popular Prakashan is an Indian independent publisher and bookseller founded in Bombay in 1924.

History

In 1924, founder Ganesh R. Bhatkal, a former employee of Oxford University Press India, established the Popular Book Depot as an independent bookseller. In 1962, his successors Sadanand and Ramdas G. Bhatkal created Popular Prakashan Pvt. Ltd. as a publishing company. [1]

Publications

Cookery

Popular Prakashan specialises in cookery titles. Sanjeev Kapoor of Khana Khazana is Popular’s best-selling author and Popular has published more than 85 books by him. These are also available in Hindi, Marathi and Gujarati. Rasachandrika: Saraswat Cookery Book is a great compilation of delectable recipes from Maharashtrian and Konkani cuisine. [2] Asha Khatau and Jeroo Mehta have also been published through Popular.

Arts, culture and women's studies

In 1990, Popular Prakashan set up a Kolkata-based associate firm, Bhatkal and Sen, for specialized publishing in the fields of culture and women’s studies. These books focus primarily on contemporary debates, grassroots movements, politics and culture as viewed from a critical and progressive standpoint. Popular Prakashan's subsidiary, Foundation B&G, also publishes books on the arts. [3]

Books in Marathi

Popular Prakashan has published titles in Marathi, concentrating mainly on fiction, drama, literary criticism and poetry. Writers in this language include Vinda Karandikar, Gangadhar Gadgil, G.A. Kulkarni, Nirmala Deshpande and Kamal Desai.

Children's books

Popular have published a series of storybooks in association with Chandamama, the oldest children’s magazine in India.[ citation needed ] They have also published the Brainworks series of books in association with Leopard Learning Systems, USA, as well as other early learning titles. [4] Shobhaa De’s book for teenagers, S’s Secret, was released by Popular Prakashan in December 2009. It has been translated into Hindi and Marathi.

Joint ventures

Popular shares a relationship with Encyclopædia Britannica in India with whom it has published over a hundred titles in the last few years. With National Geographic Popular has published a series on animal life, the human body, weather and the universe. These include Life Cycles, Ecosystems and Animal Adaptations. They have also published early learning books in collaboration with Modern Publishing, USA. Popular Prakashan have also published children's books in conjunction with Disney. [5]

In partnership with DeAgostini, Popular Prakashan has published the I Get It children's reference series [6] and English-language course English Interactive. [7]

They held the posts such as Deshpandes and Gadkaris and according to the historian, B.R. Sunthankar, produced some of the best warriors in Maharashtrian History.

Bhatkal & Sen is a publishing partnership between Mandira Sen and Popular Prakashan. The company is based in Kolkata and publishes the imprints Stree and Samya. It is noted for publishing authors such as Kancha Ilaiah, Om Prakash Valmiki, Uma Chakravarti, Gail Omvedt, Manikuntala Sen, Ashok Mitra, V. Geetha, and Bani Basu, and has prominent scholars such as Susie Tharu and Maithreyi Krishnaraj as editors. It publishes academic works in the social sciences, memoirs and classic fiction in translation in English and Bengali.

Bhalchandra Vanaji Nemade is an Indian Marathi language writer, poet, critic and linguistic scholar. Beginning with his debut novel Kosala, Nemade brought new dimensions to the world of Marathi literature. This was followed by a tetralogy consisting of novels Bidhar, Hool, Jareela and Jhool. In 2013, Nemade published his magnum opus titled Hindu: Jagnyachi Samruddha Adgal which is regarded as his masterpiece. Nemade is a recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award as well as the Jnanapith Award, the highest literary honour in India. In 2013, he was awarded the Padma Shri.

Saraswat cuisine is the cuisine of the Saraswat Brahmins from the Konkan region on the western coast of India. Saraswat cuisine differs within the Saraswat Brahmin subsects and within the Konkan-Canara region. Saraswat cuisine originally hails from the Konkan region including Uttara Kannada, Udupi district, Dakshina Kannada, Damaon, and Goa, India. Saraswat cuisine is popular served in many restaurants throughout the western coast of India, and especially in the cities of Bombay and Bangalore. Each variation has its unique flavour and makes uses of different vegetables and fruits available in the region. Saraswat cuisine is usually pesco-vegetarian, except acharyas and purohits who follow a strictly saatvik vegetarian diet. According the Saraswat folklore, fish meats are regarded as sea vegetables. Historically, they have refrained from eating any terrestrial animals in general.

Chandrashekhara Kambara is a prominent Indian poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada language and the founder-vice-chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi also president of the Sahitya Akademi, country's premier literary institution, after Vinayak Krishna Gokak (1983) and U.R. National Book Trust (NBT) is an Indian publishing house, which was founded in 1957 as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education of the Government of India. The activities of the Trust include publishing, promotion of books and reading, promotion of Indian books abroad, assistance to authors and publishers, and promotion of children's literature. NBT publishes reading material in several Indian languages for all age-groups, including books for children and Neo-literates. They publish a monthly Newsletter about recent publications.

Kali for Women was a start-up feminist publisher in India. Urvashi Butalia and Ritu Menon set up Kali for Women in 1984, arguably the first Indian publishing house dedicated to publishing on and for women. When they decided to take this step, Butalia had worked with Oxford University Press and Zed Books in Delhi, while Ritu Menon was a scholar. They started with very little capital but with an urgent sense that they had to make Indian women's voices heard, through academic publishing and activist works, translation and fiction. They were followed by other Indian presses concerned with gender and social issues, such as Bhatkal and Sen who publish the imprints Stree and Samya and Tulika Books.

Geet Chaturvedi is a Hindi poet, short story author, lyricist, screenwriter and novelist. Often regarded as an avant-garde writer, he was awarded the Bharat Bhushan Agrawal Award for poetry in 2007 and Krishna Pratap Award for Fiction in 2014. He lives in Bhopal, India. He is active both as a fiction writer and critic. In 2011, The Indian Express included him in a list of the 'Ten Best Writers' of India. His poems have been translated into 22 languages worldwide. He translated the work of great Spanish Poet Pablo Neruda in Hindi and many others.

Ashok Ramchandra Kelkar (1929–2014) was a linguist and critical Marathi writer from Maharashtra, India. He was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2002 and Sahitya Akademi Award for Marathi in 2010.

Marathi Brahmins, are communities native to the Indian state of Maharashtra. They are classified into mainly three sub-divisions based on their places of origin, "Desh", "Karad" and "Konkan". The Brahmin subcastes that come under Maharashtra Brahmins include Deshastha, Chitpavan (Konkanastha), Saraswat, Karhade, and Devrukhe. The Deshastha Brahmins are considered the original Brahmins of Maharashtra, with communities such as the Chitpavan being thought of as migrants from other areas.

Dinanath Dalal was an Indian painter and illustrator. He is well-known for his artworks that gained popularity among the masses through book covers, stories, cartoons, calendars and illustrations, especially in the Deepavali magazine. His works depicted various subjects such as mythology, history, social issues, human emotions and politics.

Teji Grover is a Hindi poet, fiction writer, translator and painter. According to poet and critic Ashok Vajpeyi, "Teji Grover shapes her language away from the prevalent idiom of Hindi poetry. In her poetry language acquires a form which is unique..." Her poems have been translated into many Indian and foreign languages.

As of 2015, Marathi has at least two translation available of the Tirukkural, of which one is complete.
