Port Arthur Independent School District is a public school district based in Port Arthur, Texas, United States.

Contents

The district serves most of Port Arthur and a portion of Groves.

In 2012, the school district was rated "academically acceptable" by the Texas Education Agency. [2]

Administration

The district is headed by the PAISD School Board, which is ultimately responsible for the well-being of the district. It hires a superintendent of schools who is chiefly responsible for overseeing the day-to-day affairs of the district. This superintendent accomplishes this with the aid of other individuals and groups that the administration comprises. The current superintendent is Dr. Mark Porterie.

History

Prior to 1965 schools were segregated by race: White students attended Thomas Jefferson High School. Black students attended two elementary schools, Carver Elementary School and Lamar Elementary School, as well as Franklin Junior High School and Lincoln High School. [3]

Dress code

The Port Arthur Independent School District adopted a uniform dress code that was enforced district-wide during the 2007–2008 school year. [4]

In 2001 the racial breakdown of the student body was: 58% black, 21% Hispanic, 13% white, and 8% Asian. [5]

Originally built in 1966 as Lincoln Junior and Senior High School, it later operated as Lincoln Junior High School until Gregory Elementary School merged into it in 1980, forming Gregory-Lincoln. The school moved into its current building in 2008; the rebuilding was delayed due to concerns that U.S. Civil War-era graveyards would be disturbed by the rebuilding process.

It was established in August 2002 after a merger of three previous high schools: Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Stephen F. Austin. Since then, Port Arthur Memorial High School has been the only high school in the Port Arthur Independent School District. It serves most of Port Arthur and a portion of Groves. Initially, the school used the former Lincoln and Jefferson campuses; its new facility opened for the 2009–10 school year on the northern side of Port Arthur. It also has a 9th Grade Center in the Port Acres area of Port Arthur, on the former Austin Middle School campus.

Thomas Jefferson High School was a public high school in Port Arthur, Texas and a part of the Port Arthur Independent School District. Prior to 1965 schools were segregated by race and white students attended Jefferson; the school began admitting black students that year.

Abraham Lincoln High School was a public high school in western Port Arthur, Texas and a part of the Port Arthur Independent School District. Prior to 1965 schools were segregated by race and black students attended Lincoln. White students did not choose to attend the school in significant numbers after desegregation even though the district had initial plans for a more racially balanced student body.
